Chapter 8 - chapter 8: Hidden Motives

đź“– The CEO Contract Bride

The drive back to the mansion was unusually quiet.

Not the comfortable kind of silence they had grown used to…

But the kind filled with unspoken thoughts.

---

Tessa sat by the window, watching the city pass by in blurred motion.

Her reflection faintly appeared on the glass.

Calm on the outside.

But her mind was active.

---

Across from her, the CEO sat in his usual composed posture, focused on his tablet.

Yet this time, his attention didn't seem fully absorbed.

---

Tessa glanced at him briefly.

Then looked away.

She hesitated for a moment before speaking.

"You and Clara… have known each other for a long time?"

---

The CEO didn't immediately respond.

A few seconds passed.

Then he said,

"Yes."

---

Tessa nodded slightly.

"Work?"

"Yes."

---

She turned her gaze back to the window.

"Is she part of your company?"

"No."

---

Another pause.

Then Tessa asked,

"Then why does she have access to you so easily?"

---

This time, the CEO lowered his tablet slightly.

His tone remained steady.

"Because she understands the environment."

---

Tessa frowned slightly.

"That's not a complete answer."

---

The CEO looked at her.

"It is sufficient."

---

Tessa exhaled softly.

"Everything with you is always 'sufficient' or 'not required.'"

---

He didn't respond.

---

She continued,

"It makes it hard to understand what's actually going on."

---

A brief silence followed.

Then he said,

"You are not required to understand everything."

---

Tessa turned to face him slightly.

"But I'm involved in it."

---

That statement lingered in the air.

Not challenged.

Not denied.

Just acknowledged.

---

The CEO's gaze held hers for a moment longer than usual.

Then he returned his attention to his tablet.

"You will adapt."

---

Tessa looked away again.

"Maybe."

---

The rest of the ride continued without further conversation.

---

When they arrived at the mansion, Tessa stepped out of the car first.

She didn't wait for him this time.

She simply walked ahead toward the entrance.

---

Inside, the house felt quieter than usual.

Or perhaps it was just her perception.

---

She headed straight to her room, but halfway down the hallway, she slowed her steps.

Something felt different.

---

She paused.

Then turned slightly.

"…Am I overthinking this?" she murmured.

---

Before she could continue her thoughts, a maid approached.

"Ma'am, the CEO requested your presence in the study later this evening."

---

Tessa nodded.

"Alright. Thank you."

---

She continued to her room, closing the door behind her.

---

Inside, she sat down at her desk.

But instead of reading or resting, she found herself staring blankly at the surface.

---

Clara's presence.

The familiarity.

The way she spoke.

The way the CEO responded.

---

None of it was inappropriate.

But none of it was explained either.

---

Tessa leaned back in her chair.

"This contract…" she whispered.

"It's not as simple as it looks."

---

Hours passed.

Evening approached.

---

A knock came at her door.

"Ma'am, the CEO is ready to see you."

---

Tessa stood up and adjusted her outfit.

"Coming."

---

She made her way to the study again.

This time, without hesitation.

---

Inside, the CEO stood near a shelf, reviewing a document.

He didn't look up immediately.

"Sit," he said.

---

Tessa took her seat.

This time, she didn't wait for him to speak first.

"You asked me to come."

"Yes."

"Why?"

---

He closed the document and turned toward her.

"There will be a formal gathering next week."

---

Tessa raised a brow slightly.

"Another one?"

"Yes."

---

"What's the purpose this time?"

"Stakeholder alignment."

---

She nodded slowly.

"And my role?"

---

He walked toward his desk and placed the document down.

"Present as my spouse."

---

Tessa crossed her arms slightly.

"So… appearances again."

"Yes."

---

She studied his expression.

"You don't ever get tired of maintaining appearances?"

---

He responded without hesitation.

"It is necessary."

---

Tessa leaned forward slightly.

"For business?"

"Yes."

"For reputation?"

"Yes."

---

She paused.

"And for control?"

---

That question lingered longer than the others.

The CEO's gaze remained steady.

"Control is part of stability."

---

Tessa held his gaze.

"Or maybe it's part of avoidance."

---

A subtle shift occurred in the room.

Not visible.

But noticeable in tone.

---

The CEO stepped closer slightly.

"You are interpreting beyond your role."

---

Tessa didn't back down.

"Maybe I am."

---

Silence followed.

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

---

Then the CEO said,

"Your observations are not incorrect."

---

Tessa blinked slightly.

That was unexpected.

---

He continued,

"But they are not relevant to the terms."

---

Tessa relaxed slightly in her seat.

"So you admit there's more going on."

---

His response was calm.

"There is always more than what is visible."

---

Tessa nodded.

"Then why not be transparent?"

---

The CEO looked at her directly.

"Transparency is not always efficient."

---

Tessa let out a small breath.

"Of course."

---

Another pause.

Then she asked,

"Is Clara part of that 'more'?"

---

The question was direct.

No hesitation.

---

The CEO didn't answer immediately.

This time, the pause was longer.

---

Then he said,

"Clara is connected to a prior phase of my work."

---

Tessa listened carefully.

"Prior phase?"

"Yes."

---

She narrowed her eyes slightly.

"Not current?"

"No."

---

"Then why does she still have access to you?"

---

The CEO's tone remained controlled.

"Because some connections do not end abruptly."

---

Tessa leaned back slightly.

"That sounds… complicated."

---

"It is."

---

She studied him again.

Not with suspicion this time.

But with curiosity.

---

"Do you trust her?" Tessa asked.

---

The question hung in the air.

---

The CEO replied,

"I assess her reliability."

---

Tessa tilted her head slightly.

"That's not the same as trust."

---

He didn't deny it.

---

Silence returned once more.

---

Tessa looked down briefly, processing everything.

Then she spoke softly,

"I think I'm starting to understand your world a little better."

---

The CEO observed her quietly.

---

"It's not just contracts," she continued.

"It's layers."

---

He nodded once.

"Yes."

---

She looked up at him.

"And everyone has a role within those layers."

---

"Yes."

---

Tessa exhaled slowly.

"Even me."

---

The CEO didn't respond immediately.

Then he said,

"You are an essential component of the current structure."

---

Tessa raised a slight brow.

"That sounds more… important than I expected."

---

"It is accurate."

---

A faint, almost unnoticeable shift appeared in Tessa's expression.

Not surprise.

Not pride.

Just awareness.

---

"Then I should probably play my role properly," she said.

---

The CEO gave a slight nod.

"You already are."

---

Tessa stood up.

"Then I'll continue improving."

---

He watched her.

"Good."

---

She turned toward the door, then paused briefly.

Without looking back, she asked,

"One more thing."

---

"Yes."

---

"Are you building something… or protecting something?"

---

The room fell silent again.

---

After a moment, the CEO answered,

"Both."

---

Tessa nodded slightly.

"Thought so."

---

She opened the door and stepped out.

---

Inside the study, the CEO remained standing.

His expression unchanged.

But his thoughts, for reasons not easily defined, lingered longer than usual.

---

Outside, Tessa walked down the hallway slowly.

Her perspective had begun to shift.

Not drastically.

But steadily.

---

This contract was no longer just an arrangement to her.

It was becoming something deeper.

More complex.

More layered.

---

And whether she was ready or not…

She was already inside it.
