The camp consisted of four tents and a fire.
They had set up on the last stretch of living earth before the wasteland began. Behind them, the mountains were green and alive. Trees grew there. Grass covered the ground. The air was breathable, the earth was solid, and the sky was grey but normal.
Ahead of them, the world ended.
The Abyssal Epicenter began like a line drawn across the dirt. On one side, there was earth. On the other, ash. The ground beyond the line was grey, as if someone had drained every trace of color from the soil and left behind only the powder of dead matter. The ash was ankle-deep and constantly shifting, stirred by winds that came from nowhere and went nowhere.
Then there was the sky.
