Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Art of the Poisoned Kiss

The penthouse felt different now. Before, it was a palace of mystery; now, it was a crime scene. Every piece of expensive art, every marble surface, and every automated light felt like it had been paid for with my father's life's work.

Elias had been discharged from the hospital three days ago. He was confined to the penthouse, his arm in a sling, looking more like a fallen god than a titan of industry. The "Victory Gala" shooting had dominated the news, and the "Thorne Power Couple" was now the most searched topic in the country. The world saw a hero who took a bullet for his wife.

I saw a man protecting his investment.

"You're quiet today, Zahra," Elias said, his voice raspy. He was sitting in his leather armchair, the one that overlooked the entire city. He had a glass of scotch in his good hand, despite the doctor's orders.

I walked over to him, my movements fluid and deliberate. I was wearing a white silk slip dress—soft, innocent, and perfectly calculated to make him forget that I had a brain capable of fire. I knelt between his legs, resting my chin on his knee, looking up at him with wide, adoring eyes.

"I'm just thinking about how lucky I am," I lied, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "If that bullet had gone two inches to the left..."

Elias reached out, his fingers tangling in my hair. He pulled my head back gently, searching my face. For a second, I saw a flicker of something—was it guilt? Or was he just checking to see if his 'vessel' was still loyal?

"I told you," he whispered, leaning down until his forehead touched mine. "I won't let anything happen to you. You are the most important thing in my world right now."

Right now. The words echoed the audio recording I'd heard. Until the child is born.

"I want to help you, Elias," I said, my hand sliding up his chest, stopping just below the bandage on his shoulder. "The board is restless after the shooting. Silas's allies are still out there. You're injured. Let me be your eyes and ears. Give me access to the internal server so I can help Viper manage the fallout."

Elias stiffened. Even in his weakened state, his businessman's instinct was a hair-trigger. "The server is restricted, Zahra. It's for Thorne executives only."

"And am I not a Thorne?" I asked, a single, perfect tear rolling down my cheek. I had practiced that tear in the mirror for an hour. "I almost lost you, Elias. I realized that if you go, I have nothing. I don't even know how to protect our future... or the future of our family."

I placed his hand on my stomach. It was flat, empty of the heir he so desperately wanted, but the gesture was a masterstroke. I saw his eyes soften. I saw the wall of the "Soltero de Hierro" crumble just a fraction.

"I'll talk to Viper," he finally said, his voice thick. "I'll give you a guest-level clearance. You can help with the PR and the social logs."

Guest-level. He was still playing it safe. But he didn't realize that for a woman with a mission, a cracked window is as good as an open door.

"Thank you," I whispered, leaning up to kiss him. It was a long, slow kiss, one that I poured all my fake devotion into. I felt him melt against me, his good arm wrapping around my waist, pulling me closer.

He thought he was winning. He thought he had successfully manipulated the "poor, desperate girl" into loving her captor.

Two Hours Later - The Office

Elias was asleep, knocked out by the heavy painkillers the nurse had administered. I slipped out of bed, my bare feet making no sound on the plush carpet. I didn't turn on the lights. I didn't need them. The glow of the city provided enough light for a thief.

I entered his office and sat in his chair. It was cold. I pulled up the terminal and entered the guest credentials he had authorized.

"Viper is good," I muttered to myself, watching the firewall layers pulse on the screen. "But he's arrogant. He thinks nobody would dare to hack a Thorne from inside the house."

I pulled out a small black device the Ghost had given me. It was a hardware bypass—a "key" that mirrored Elias's own biometric data. While Elias was in surgery, I had taken a high-resolution scan of his thumbprint using a gel-pad I'd hidden in my palm.

I pressed the device against the scanner.

Access Level: Alpha.

The screen turned a deep, blood-red. Files that were hidden from the public, even from the board, began to populate the screen. I skipped past the logistics reports and the real estate holdings. I went straight for the "Offshore Trust" folder.

My goal wasn't just to steal his money. That would be too simple. Elias could make more money. No, I wanted to destroy his reputation. I wanted to make the Thorne name synonymous with the very thing he hated most: failure and fraud.

I found it. The Thorne-Vance Merger: Final Draft.

I opened the document and scanned the lines. It was even worse than the recording. Elena Vance wasn't just an ex-fiancée. Her company was the one that had provided the capital for the "hostile liquidation" of my father's business. They were partners in the crime that destroyed my life.

And there, in the fine print, was the final blow.

"In the event of a successful heir production, 40% of the Founder's Shares will be transferred to Vance Industries as payment for 'Consultation Services.'"

He wasn't just using me to get his inheritance. He was selling part of his grandfather's legacy to the woman who helped him ruin me.

"You greedy, soulless bastard," I hissed.

I didn't drain the accounts. Not yet. Instead, I began to plant "seeds." I used my Alpha access to set up a series of scheduled transfers. Small amounts, diverted from the Vance merger fund into a series of accounts linked to... Silas Thorne.

When the board found out that money was "leaking" to the man who had tried to kill Elias, they wouldn't just fire Elias. They would crucify him.

But I needed a distraction. I needed something to keep Elias's eyes off the numbers while my seeds grew.

I looked at the clock. It was 3:00 AM. I closed the laptop, wiped the biometric device, and headed back to the bedroom.

I crawled back into bed, the cold air of the room chilling my skin. Elias stirred in his sleep, his arm reaching out instinctively to pull me toward him. He tucked my head under his chin, his breath warm against my hair.

"Love you, Zahra," he mured, half-asleep.

I closed my eyes, a cold smile touching my lips in the dark.

"I know you do, Elias," I whispered. "And that's exactly why you're going to lose everything."

The Next Morning

The breakfast table was set with fresh fruit, artisanal bread, and a tension that could be cut with a knife. Elias was looking at his tablet, his brow furrowed.

"Something wrong?" I asked, pouring him a cup of coffee.

"Just some odd fluctuations in the Vance account," he said, rubbing his temples. "Probably just the market reacting to the shooting. Viper is looking into it."

"I'm sure it's nothing," I said, sliding a plate of fruit toward him. "By the way, Elias... I was thinking. Since the doctors want you to stay home and rest, why don't we invite Elena over for dinner? I'd like to... clear the air. For the sake of our future."

Elias choked on his coffee. He looked at me, his eyes wide with shock. "You want to invite Elena? Here? After what she said to you at the gala?"

"I want her to see that we are a united front," I said, taking his hand and squeezing it. "I want her to know that whatever was between you two is in the past. If we are going to merge companies, we shouldn't have secrets, right?"

Elias looked at me for a long time. I could see the wheels turning in his head. He thought I was being the "Bigger Person." He thought I was so in love with him that I was willing to befriend his ex.

"You're an incredible woman, Zahra," he said, his voice full of a genuine, sickening admiration. "If that's what you want... I'll have Marcus arrange it for Friday night."

"Perfect," I said, standing up to kiss his cheek.

Dinner on Friday. The wife, the husband, and the co-conspirator.

It was going to be a beautiful evening. And by the time the dessert was served, I was going to make sure that Elena and Elias were at each other's throats, while I sat back and watched the Thorne empire begin to burn.
