Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Unwelcome Visitors (Finally)

I didn't know how long I had been asleep.

Or resting.

Time felt strange in this place—quiet, still, and cut off from the outside world.

But eventually…

I woke up.

My eyes opened slowly as faint light crept through the small window.

"…Morning," I muttered.

My body felt lighter.

Not fully recovered—but better than before.

I sat up and stretched slightly.

"…Status."

---

[STATUS WINDOW]

Name: Kael

Level: 1

Strength: 6

Agility: 6

Intelligence: 7

Endurance: 6

---

No change.

But that was expected.

Growth didn't come from rest alone.

"…I'll need to train more," I said quietly.

Just as I finished speaking—

A sound.

Knock.

I froze.

"…?"

Knock.

Knock.

My entire body went still.

That wasn't random.

Someone was at the door.

Slowly, I stood up.

"…System."

---

[No immediate threat detected.]

---

I narrowed my eyes.

"That doesn't help much."

Knock.

Knock.

This time, slightly louder.

My heart rate increased.

"…Who is it?" I called out, keeping my voice steady.

A pause.

Then a voice from outside.

"Relax. I'm not here to arrest you."

My expression tightened.

That voice…

Was unfamiliar.

But calm.

Too calm.

"…Then who are you?" I asked cautiously.

Another short pause.

Then—

"…Someone who knows what you are."

My grip on my hand tightened slightly.

"…That's not a reassuring answer."

I stepped closer to the door, but didn't open it.

"State your purpose."

A faint chuckle came from the other side.

"Straight to the point. Good."

Silence followed for a moment.

Then—

"…I'll make this simple."

The voice lowered slightly.

"…You're being watched."

My eyes narrowed.

"…I already know that."

"…Not by the same thing."

I froze.

"…What?"

Another pause.

Then the voice continued.

"…May I come in? Talking through a door isn't ideal."

I hesitated.

My instincts told me this was dangerous.

But at the same time—

This person clearly knew something.

"…If you try anything, I'll know," I said firmly.

"…Fair enough."

I took a slow breath.

Then unlocked the door.

It creaked open.

---

Standing outside was a man.

He looked ordinary at first glance.

Dark coat.

Simple attire.

No visible weapons.

No armor.

But his eyes…

Were different.

Sharp.

Observant.

And calm in a way that didn't match the situation.

"…Kael, I assume," he said.

I didn't respond immediately.

Instead, I studied him.

"…Who are you?" I asked again.

The man smiled slightly.

"…A messenger, if you want a simple answer."

I didn't lower my guard.

"Messengers don't usually show up uninvited."

"…True."

He stepped slightly closer to the doorway, but didn't enter.

"I'll keep it brief."

His expression turned more serious.

"…You've drawn attention."

I narrowed my eyes.

"Yeah. I noticed."

He shook his head slightly.

"…Not just locally."

My body tensed.

"…Explain."

The man's gaze locked onto mine.

"…There are groups that monitor anomalies. People like you."

I stayed silent.

"…Your System is not standard," he continued.

"I know."

"…And that makes you valuable."

"…Or dangerous."

"Both," he replied.

I exhaled slowly.

"Get to the point."

The man nodded.

"…You have two options."

My eyes sharpened slightly.

"…I'm listening."

He raised one finger.

"Option one: continue alone. Survive, grow, and eventually attract even more attention—some of which you won't be able to handle."

Then he raised a second finger.

"Option two: align with someone who understands what you are… and learn faster."

I stared at him.

"…And I'm guessing you represent that 'someone'?"

The man smiled faintly.

"…In a way."

Silence filled the space between us.

I didn't answer immediately.

My mind processed the situation carefully.

Trusting someone like this wasn't simple.

But rejecting him blindly wasn't smart either.

"…Why me?" I asked.

The man's expression softened slightly.

"…Because you're already marked."

My eyes narrowed.

"…Marked by who?"

He didn't answer directly.

Instead, he said:

"…By things that don't make mistakes."

That answer alone was enough to make my expression tighten.

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then asked:

"…What do I get if I accept?"

The man's eyes sharpened slightly.

"…Information."

A pause.

"…And a chance to survive what's coming."

I didn't respond immediately.

Outside, the world continued as usual.

Unaware.

Uninvolved.

But inside this small, quiet building—

a decision was being weighed.

I crossed my arms slightly.

"…And if I refuse?"

The man didn't hesitate.

"…Then you'll still be watched."

A brief silence.

Then he added—

"…But without guidance."

I exhaled slowly.

"…So either way, I'm already in the game."

The man nodded once.

"…Exactly."

I glanced down for a moment.

Thinking.

Analyzing.

Then—

I looked back at him.

"…I'm not joining anything blindly."

He smiled slightly.

"…Good. I wouldn't expect you to."

I stepped aside slightly, not fully opening the door—but not closing it either.

"…Talk."

The man's expression shifted subtly.

Not surprise.

Not relief.

Just acknowledgment.

"…That's a start," he said quietly.

And as he stepped closer—

somewhere far beyond the room, beyond the city, beyond what either of us could see—

something else reacted.

Not loudly.

Not immediately.

But unmistakably.

Because now…

Kael was no longer just being watched.

He was beginning to be approached.
