Chapter 3 - Blood is not thicker than water

The silence didn't last long.

It shattered.

"What the hell is this?!" Richard Carter's voice roared through the hall.

All eyes snapped toward him.

His face was red with fury—not at Daniel. Not at Chloe.

At her.

Elena stood still at the bottom of the stage, her expression unchanged.

Cold.

Untouched.

"I think it was quite clear," she said calmly. "Do you need me to play it again?"

Gasps rippled through the guests.

Richard's hand slammed against the nearest table, the glasses rattling violently. "You dare embarrass this family like this in front of everyone?!"

He came near Elena and grabbed her hand. "Why are you doing this?"

Embarrass.

Why.

The words almost made her laugh.

But she didn't. She shook her hand out of his grip and tilted her head slightly, her gaze steady.

"I embarrassed YOU? I just showed you the video, and you're asking me why I cancelled my engagement with this scumbag?" she repeated harshly.

Her mother rushed forward, her heels clicking sharply against the floor. "Elena, stop this right now! Apologize and turn that thing off!"

Elena looked at her.

Really looked at her.

Searching for even a trace of concern.

Of care.

Of… anything.

There was none.

Only irritation.

Only anger.

Only disappointment.

But not for her.

Never for her.

A slow breath left Elena's lips.

"Apologize?" she echoed.

Before she could say more—

Chloe stepped forward, her eyes already glistening with fake tears.

"Dad… Mom… I can explain—"

"Oh, I'm sure you can, for god sake, have some respect for yourself before going after a committed man and that too your sister's fiancé. Don't even try," Elena cut in smoothly.

Chloe flinched.

Just slightly.

Elena's gaze sharpened. "Although I do wanna see you explain it," she smirked.

Chloe went silent.

"Go on," she said, folding her arms. "Explain how long you've been sleeping with my fiancé."

A collective murmur spread through the crowd.

Chloe's lips trembled. "It's not like that—"

"Then what is it like?" Elena's voice dropped, colder now. "Did he accidentally fall into your bed or did you accidentally fell into his?"

A few guests stifled gasps.

Daniel finally stepped forward, his jaw tight. "That's enough, Elena."

Ah.

There he was.

Still acting like he had authority.

Still acting as if she owed him something.

Elena turned to him slowly.

And for the first time that night—

There was no love in her eyes.

Not even pain.

Just… nothing.

"Ah, yes, my lovely ex-fiance, you don't get to tell me what to do now, baby,"  she said, using his nickname for her in a mocking way.

Something in her tone made him pause.

Made him hesitate.

Good.

He should.

"You lost that right," she continued, her voice steady, "the moment you decided my sister was more convenient than loyalty."

His expression darkened. "You're twisting things—"

"No," she cut him off again. "I'm finally seeing them clearly."

Her words hit harder because she didn't raise her voice.

She didn't need to.

The truth was loud enough.

Richard stepped forward again, his patience clearly gone. "This ends now. You will apologize to Daniel and Chloe, and we will proceed with the engagement as planned."

For a second—

No one spoke.

Even the air seemed to freeze.

Elena blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then she laughed.

Softly.

Brokenly.

Except it wasn't broken.

It was… empty.

"You want me," she said slowly, "to apologize… to them?"

Her mother's voice turned sharp. "Don't test us, Elena."

Test.

As if she hadn't been tested her entire life.

As if she hadn't been the one bending, adjusting, sacrificing—

For them.

For this family.

For appearances.

Her laughter faded.

And when she spoke again—

There was steel in her voice.

"I'm not apologizing."

A clear, firm statement.

No hesitation.

No fear.

Chloe sniffed softly, clinging to Daniel's arm now. "See? She's always been like this… dramatic… selfish…"

Elena's gaze snapped to her.

Sharp enough to cut.

"Say that again."

Chloe froze.

Because this time—

There was something dangerous in Elena's eyes.

Something that hadn't been there before.

Daneil tightened his hold on Chloe, glaring at Elena. "You've done enough. Just leave if you want to act like this."

Leave.

The word settled between them.

Heavy.

Final.

Elena stared at him for a long moment.

Then she nodded.

"Don't worry," she said softly. "I am"

She turned to her parents one last time.

"And good luck paying for this shitty engagement party, your name's on the bill."

Her voice didn't shake.

Her hands didn't tremble.

"I hope," she said, "she was worth it."

A beat.

Then, colder—

"Because you just lost your daughter."

Her mother scoffed. "Don't be ridiculous—"

But Elena was already stepping back.

Already creating distance.

Emotionally.

Irreversibly.

"I mean it," she said, her gaze unwavering. "From this moment on… I have no family."

That—

That finally shook them.

Just a little.

But not enough.

It would never be enough.

So she turned.

And this time—

No one stopped her.

No one called her back.

No one chose her.

The doors opened.

Cool night air rushed in.

And without looking back—

Elena Carter walked out.

Not as a daughter.

Not as a fiancée.

But as someone reborn from betrayal.

Someone colder.

Stronger.

And far more dangerous.
