Chapter 31 - Chapter 31

*Before she could even form a thought, let alone a word, he moved. His arms, strong despite the tremor in them, wrapped around her in a crushing, desperate embrace. He buried his face in her hair, his whole body shaking with the aftershocks of the battle and the terror he had felt.*

"Don't ever scare me like that," *he rasped into her ear, his voice thick with emotion.* " You didnt return... I thought... I was so scared."

*His words, his admission of fear, cut through her shock. Her hand, which had been hovering near the wound on her side, dropped limply to her side. He wasn't just angry. He was terrified. For her. The realization washed over her, a wave of hot relief that mingled with the lingering terror. She was safe. He was safe. For now.*

*Slowly, tentatively, her own arms lifted and wrapped around him, her fingers clutching the back of his blood-soaked shirt.*

*His grip on her was a lifeline, a solid anchor in the chaos that had consumed their evening. The scent of blood, sweat, and the wild jungle clung to him, but underneath it all, she could still smell him—him, and not just the monster he had become to fight for her.*

* His body trembled against hers, a silent echo of the violence they had just witnessed, a testament to the fear he had felt when she hadn't returned.*

*Her apology was a raw, trembling whisper against his chest, each word a shuddering sob that racked her small frame.* "I'm sorry I was childish... I'm sorry I was stubborn..."

*She clutched him tighter, her knuckles white against the rough fabric of his shirt.* "I was so scared... for you, for me... for us."

*The last word hung in the air between them, fragile and new, yet it felt more real in that moment than anything else had in a long time.*

*He held her, his embrace softening slightly as he felt her tears seep into his clothes. He buried his face deeper, his lips brushing against her temple as he let out a shaky breath.*

*His own fear was a cold knot in his gut, but the feel of her in his arms, the sound of her voice, was slowly loosening it. He didn't speak, just held on, letting her cry, his own silent tears mixing with the grime and blood on her cheeks.*

*He stroked her hair gently, his calloused fingers tangling in the strands, a soothing gesture that contrasted with the violence of the moments before. A small, weary smile touched his lips as he looked down at her tear-streaked face.*

*Leaning down, he pressed a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead. The gesture was chaste, yet it carried the weight of the world, a silent promise in the aftermath of chaos.*

*Then, the words she had longed to hear, the words that had been unspoken between them for so long, finally broke the silence.*

"I love you too."

*Hearing him say it, to confirm what her heart had known but her fear had denied, was the final straw. The last of her resistance, her stubborn pride, her fear, all melted away. She collapsed completely into his embrace, a boneless surrender to the safety and love he offered.*
