Chapter 1 - The Diamond Sniper Emerges

"Hey, anyone up for Overlant duo right after school? I'm a Gold tank!"

"You see OChamps yesterday? That pick was insane. Forward dual sniper has gotta be legendary, right?"

"To celebrate dual snipers at OChamps, duo with me today or what."

"You're trash though. Last time you got outdamaged by a healer as sniper—what're you on about."

Like any high school, the classroom buzzed with chatter during break.

But the students' conversations all revolved around one topic.

Overlant.

The virtual reality everyone had dreamed of finally arrived, and now it was the world's most popular game.

The rules were simple.

Five players divide roles into a team, and one of four missions appears.

Point capture alternating between attack and defense.

Transport cargo to an objective point.

Deathmatch, racking up kills for points.

Contention, defending a key object.

It resembled classic hyper FPS PC games in many ways, but the VR element made it feel refreshingly alien.

As a result, Overlant exploded worldwide, ushering in an esports golden age unlikely to be repeated. The World Championship prize pool alone was 60 billion won.

From kids to adults, young and old—no one was immune.

Everyone could enjoy it.

Trend-sensitive students couldn't ignore the hottest game, and its addictive dopamine hits were lethal to kids.

Seventeen-year-old Lee Siwoo was no exception.

He'd only just started, but after homework, he'd hit capsule rooms whenever he scraped together spare cash. The moment he hit the ranked requirement, he jumped into ranked games.

Lately, Overlant consumed his every thought.

"Yo, how late were you at the capsule room yesterday?"

Someone asked Siwoo.

It was his usual buddy, Han Cheolmin.

Siwoo shrugged at him.

"Not much. You?"

"Like two hours then. Pretty good, huh?"

"All killer queues, so no way it was two full hours."

"Yeah? Well, that's still long for you."

Cheolmin laughed. As he said, Siwoo had never stayed over two hours at a capsule room.

Money was tight.

Mom was in chemo, Dad was gone. Brother was in the army. Big sis Lee Siyeon pretty much shouldered the family.

In that situation, asking for a capsule or extra allowance? His conscience wouldn't allow it.

Textbooks for school? Sure. For gaming? Unthinkable.

Sure, sometimes he envied friends gaming freely. But mentioning it brought Sis's face to mind.

Working late nights, by Mom's side. How pathetic would he look begging for cash? Just thinking about it squeezed his chest.

He'd have ignored games entirely, but friends raved so much and made it constant convo fodder that he caved.

Even in tough straits, couldn't he enjoy a bit? Still just a freshman.

"What's your tier at now?"

"Hit Diamond 3 yesterday."

"...For real?"

Cheolmin's eyes went wide.

"Ranked games so far?"

"Like thirty? Around there."

"Whoa, only that many and you're Diamond 3?"

"Kept winning streaks, so points poured in."

Siwoo tilted his head like what's the issue?

"...Win rate?"

"90% or so."

"All dealer?"

"Yeah, sniper only."

"That make sense? Sniper one-trick at 90% win rate?"

Cheolmin smirked, nose twitching in disbelief or amusement.

"Ain't hard to adapt? Force control and traits are tricky."

"Wasn't that bad. Did a few and it clicked."

Overlant was huge, but adapting wasn't easy at first. Augmented bodies wielding special power, Force, threw off senses.

Siwoo barely struggled. Just do it, right?

Reading his mind, Cheolmin snorted.

"Dude, you're a freak talent. For real, go pro? Try a team trial. I'd drop out and grind trainee life yesterday."

Siwoo scowled, waving him off.

"Bullshit. Can't go pro. Diamond off thirty games? I'm nothing next to them."

Cheolmin's genuine awe fell on deaf ears.

Pro gamer? He'd heard stories of kids ruining lives chasing that dream.

"Gotta study."

Unlike others, Siwoo had few chances. Family finances sucked. Every shot counted—minimize failure.

Plus, Sis carrying alone was too much. As an adult, self-study fast, help out.

"Capsule rooms 'cause freshman year. Sophomore, college prep. Regular and early admission both. Next year, drop games cold, study only."

Studying was optimal.

Good grades meant scholarships.

"True, your scores are nuts."

Luckily, Siwoo excelled academically. Sharp mind, solid comprehension, focus. Top of high school.

Class rank 2, no less.

"Sucks, man. You've got real talent. Should go pro."

"How would a Silver scrub know?"

"I'm Silver 'cause team diff! Eyes are Diamond level."

"More bullshit."

Siwoo chuckled.

"Dude, I ain't lucky like you. Placement was 2-8."

"That's your skill. How do you even go 2-8?"

"No! Watch my replays! It's bullshit! After school, I'll show you!"

Cheolmin rambled on.

Siwoo half-listened, tuning him out. Tier talk turned him red—conversation stalled.

Knew it'd rile him up.

Drag!

Mid-chatter, the door slammed open.

"Overlant tier Plat+ dealer? Need a sub for class match today!!"

Class prez of Siwoo's Class 2, Han Jiyeon.

Outgoing, nice—helped Siwoo early semester. Athletic, smart, gamer, popular.

And crucially, the girl Siwoo liked.

He glanced casually. Insiders buzzed as expected.

"Didn't you fill your roster? Jonggun?"

"Lee Jonggun's hitting academy from today—can't!"

"What? Match today? Now what?"

"Dunno, we're screwed. Scrambling like this."

Class match.

Unmissable school event. Especially for trendy games.

Simple reason.

Fun.

Street cred with friends.

But how serious? Big prizes, streamer broadcast with commentary. Famous Overlant streamer hired.

That streamer's her uncle, right?

Her dad's a big corp CEO. School buzzed about the chaebol heiress. Ran a pro Overlant team too, rumor had it.

Explained the hype.

"Yo, need a dealer? You in?"

Cheolmin nudged.

"What? Rookie fresh to ranked in a class match? Team game. Lucky not to get flamed."

Siwoo shook his head.

"Shame."

Cheolmin squinted, pondered, then shot up yelling.

"Prez! Lee Siwoo's Diamond dealer! Dude's cracked!"

"Dude...!!"

Siwoo's eyes bulged. He grabbed Cheolmin's arm in shock.

"What the hell?!"

"Can't waste your talent. Why?"

Cheolmin grinned. Siwoo's face burned. Regret spilling tier.

"Siwoo, you're Diamond?!"

Jiyeon approached, eyes sparkling.

"...Yeah, just promoted yesterday."

"No way! Perfect! Sub for class match today?"

Siwoo averted eyes, awkward smile.

"Suck at team games. Newbie. No capsule cash either."

"Teamplay fine. Amateur scrap. I'll cover capsule. Help once?"

Hard to refuse Jiyeon. Memories of her help.

"Once, for real. Yeah?"

Puppy eyes. Siwoo glanced away, mumbled.

"...Okay."

"Sweet! Thanks! Tteokbokki on me next time!"

"No need..."

"See ya after school!"

Jiyeon beamed back to her crew.

"E-sports once-in-a-gen prodigy Lee Siwoo's debut tourney. Legend begins."

Cheolmin deadpanned.

"Bullshit."

Siwoo squeezed eyes shut.

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇After school, Siwoo headed to the capsule room with class match crew.

Pre-login, Jiyeon asked.

"Siwoo, your nick?"

"...SniperSiwoo LeeSiwoo."

"Didn't notice 'cause you're always serious. Funny nick. Friending now!"

Siwoo ducked head. Too embarrassed to look up. Random nick, now mortifying.

"Oh yeah, know this? Same kindergarten to middle school. High school too—fate?"

Heart skipped.

"Haha, knew but no chance to chat. Early semester bit? Not enough to close gap."

No.

That chat helped tons. Hung back alone, she reached out, intros to friends.

"Anyway, let's crush! Logging in!"

"...Yeah."

Siwoo entered his capsule.

Moments later, friend request.

— GrindHardNoDrama(KR)'s Friend Request!Fierce nick.

Totally opposite her vibe.

"Hey hey! Siwoo's subbing for Jonggun?"

"Oh, Siwoo's Diamond dealer?"

"Class rank 2 at Diamond? Smart kids game too?"

Giggling chatter. Siwoo stayed quiet. Shy type.

"Siwoo, invited! Join!"

Invite pinged.

Siwoo joined. Avatars in varied skins.

"Whoa, Siwoo 32 games to Diamond 3?"

"What? Placement not done and Diamond?"

"Gotta be Grandmaster minimum?"

Awe from crew. They'd checked profile.

"Insane, Siwoo headshot rate 87%!"

"...KDA 11.7?"

"Dealer avg KDA 3.4?"

"Devours Diamond like that? Monster!"

"Jiyeon, what monster'd you drag in?"

"...Just clicked."

Siwoo brushed off, cheeks hot, throat tickly. Felt good. Unfamiliar spotlight vs. grades.

Always low-key.

"Don't pressure him! Siwoo, play normal! Chat lots! We're a team now!"

Jiyeon said.

Knew he was special, hid shock. No burden.

"Got it."

Siwoo nodded.

Yeah, no mistakes. Like usual.

Just ranked. Tension eases.

"Starting! Broadcast live— no chat spam!"

Game launched.

Thud.

Siwoo steeled, prepped.

"We rush, brawl. Their defender's shield—weak in chaos."

Jiyeon called shots.

Strategy off defender. Theirs charge-strong. Shield supp backline, sniper heal rear—melee push natural.

"Siwoo, no pressure on their att/Supp. Early poke. No frontline push as sniper."

Siwoo nodded, ready.

"Got it."

Jiyeon continued.

"Let's go!"

"Class match hype!"

Timer ticked.

"..."

Perched, breath held, crosshair on faint enemy.

Finger rigid on trigger. Even breaths might give him away.

No shake. Misses happen.

Eyes dry-shake, heart hammered ribs.

Innumerable eyes stabbed his neck. Real ones too. But pressure sharpened him.

This moment: alive.

Then.

Siwoo pulled.

Bang—!
