Chapter 6: A Spark

The forest didn't give warnings.

It just… continued.

I walked without direction, only stopping when my body forced me to. The slight recovery from earlier helped—but it didn't last.

It never did.

The hunger came back.

Slower this time.

But still there.

"…Already…"

I let out a quiet breath, glancing around.

The river was gone now.

Just trees again.

Endless.

I tightened my grip on the piece of wood I carried. Not a weapon, not really—but it felt better than empty hands.

A sound.

Soft.

To my left.

I froze.

My body reacted before my mind.

Lowering slightly, I turned my head, focusing.

There—

Movement.

A smaller creature this time.

Not like the River Stalker.

Closer to the ones I fought before.

Weaker.

Alone.

My grip tightened.

"…I can take that."

Not confidence.

Just calculation.

It hadn't noticed me yet.

Good.

I moved slowly, carefully, each step placed with effort. My body still felt heavy, but not as bad as before.

Closer.

Closer—

A branch snapped under my foot.

The creature's head snapped toward me.

"…Too late."

It lunged.

Fast.

But not as fast as before.

Not like that thing.

I moved.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Its attack missed, and I stepped to the side, gripping my weapon tighter.

Perception.

That clarity returned.

Its movements—

Predictable.

Messy.

I stepped in.

Swung.

Hit.

Not enough.

It recoiled, screeching, trying to strike again.

I didn't stop this time.

I kept moving.

Dodging.

Striking.

Backing away.

Then forward again.

It took longer than I wanted.

But eventually—

It fell.

Still.

Silent.

I stood there, breathing heavily.

"…Not clean."

But it worked.

That was enough.

A faint message appeared.

[Low-Level Beast Defeated]

[Experience Gained]

I barely looked at it.

Instead, my eyes dropped to the body.

Hunger again.

Sharp.

Persistent.

"…I need to eat."

This time, I didn't hesitate as much.

I crouched down, repeating the same process as before.

Slow.

Messy.

But faster than last time.

I had learned something, at least.

Soon enough, I had what I needed.

I sat down near a tree, staring at it.

"…Again."

The thought of eating it raw—

Still unpleasant.

Still wrong.

But—

I paused.

My eyes shifted to the ground.

Dry leaves.

Small sticks.

The failed attempt from before flashed in my mind.

The frustration.

The wasted effort.

"…There has to be a way."

I frowned slightly.

The system.

It gave levels.

Abilities.

That perception—

That wasn't normal.

So—

Why stop there?

I closed my eyes for a second, focusing.

"…If there's a system…"

My voice was low.

"…then there should be more."

Nothing happened.

Of course.

I exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah. Not that easy."

I looked back down at the food in my hands.

Then—

Something flickered.

A faint message.

[Condition Met]

My eyes narrowed slightly.

"…What?"

Another line appeared.

[Repeated Survival Actions Detected]

[Adaptation in Progress]

A strange feeling spread through my hand.

Warm.

Subtle.

I frowned, lifting it slightly.

"…What is this…?"

The warmth grew.

Not painful.

Just… there.

Like something small had been placed inside my palm.

Then—

A faint spark appeared.

Tiny.

Weak.

Barely visible.

I froze.

"…No way."

It flickered again.

Unstable.

Then disappeared.

My heart started beating faster.

"Do that again…"

I focused.

Tried to feel that same warmth.

It didn't come immediately.

But after a moment—

There.

Again.

A small spark.

This time, it lasted longer.

Not strong.

Not useful yet.

But real.

A message appeared.

[Skill Acquired]

[Ignition – Level 1]

[Effect: Generates a small flame with focus and stamina]

"…Ignition…"

I stared at my hand.

Then at the dry leaves in front of me.

Slowly—

Carefully—

I reached down.

Focused.

The warmth returned.

The spark formed.

Then—

A tiny flame.

It caught.

Barely.

But enough.

The leaves darkened, then—

A faint fire started.

Small.

Weak.

But real.

I pulled my hand back slightly, watching it.

"…It worked."

My voice was quiet.

Almost disbelieving.

The flame flickered, unstable, like it could go out any second.

I quickly added small twigs.

Carefully.

Not rushing.

The flame grew slightly.

Still small.

But steady.

For the first time since being here—

I wasn't just reacting.

I was doing something.

Controlling something.

I looked at the food again.

Then at the fire.

"…This is better."

Not good.

Not normal.

But better.

I held it over the flame.

Watched as it slowly changed.

The smell—

Different this time.

Easier.

More familiar.

I let out a slow breath.

"…Yeah."

When I finally ate, it felt different.

Still not good.

Still not normal.

But not wrong either.

Just… necessary.

After finishing, I sat back slightly, staring at the small fire in front of me.

It flickered quietly.

Like it didn't belong in this place.

But it did.

Now.

Because I made it.

My body felt warmer.

Not just from the food.

From something else.

Something small.

But important.

"…I can survive like this."

The thought came slowly.

Carefully.

Not confident.

But real.

I looked at my hand again.

The place where the spark had appeared.

"…Ignition."

A small flame flickered again.

Weak.

But there.

I closed my hand slightly.

Then let it fade.

The forest was still dangerous.

Still endless.

Still trying to kill me.

But now—

I had something new.

Not strength.

Not power.

Just…

A way forward.

I looked ahead into the trees.

"…Let's keep going."

And this time—

When I stepped forward,

I carried fire with me.
