Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7: Arrival at the Sect

The Azure Cloud Sect was located in the Skyreach Mountains, a vast range that stretched across the horizon like the spine of a slumbering dragon. Luo Chen's first glimpse of the sect took his breath away.

The main compound consisted of towering structures carved from white stone, connected by bridges that seemed to float unsupported above the clouds. Cultivation formations were etched into every surface, creating an atmosphere thick with spiritual energy. The entire sect seemed to exist partially between the normal world and some other realm, shimmering at the edges as if reality itself was uncertain at the sect's boundaries.

As they passed through the outer gate, Luo Chen felt the spiritual energy wash over him like a warm wave. It was intoxicating, overwhelming, and utterly glorious. His newly awakened cultivation base responded eagerly, absorbing the abundant qi that saturated the air. It felt like finally coming home after years of wandering in darkness.

The outer disciples' quarters were simpler than the inner sections but still far more luxurious than anything Luo Chen had ever experienced. He was assigned a small room—barely larger than the space he had shared with three others at the orphanage, but completely private—and given a set of sect robes: simple white garments with a single blue cloud embroidered on the chest, indicating his status as an outer disciple.

That evening, Elder Liu brought him to the sect's dining hall, where hundreds of disciples gathered for the evening meal. The food was far superior to the meager fare at the orphanage—vegetables, grains, and even small portions of meat prepared with skill and care. But Luo Chen found it difficult to concentrate on eating, too overwhelmed by the sheer number of cultivators around him.

These were the outer disciples he would be training alongside. There were approximately fifty new recruits who had arrived around the same time, ranging from ages thirteen to twenty-five. All of them possessed the capacity to sense and cultivate qi, though the intensity of their talents varied greatly.

After the meal, Elder Liu led him to a gathering hall where a formal welcoming ceremony was about to begin.

The sect master's representative, a graceful woman named Ling Wei who held the rank of inner disciple, stood before the assembled new recruits. She was tall and elegant, with a cultivation aura that made Luo Chen's skin tingle. She could not have been more than thirty, yet she carried herself with the confidence of someone far more experienced.

"Welcome to the Azure Cloud Sect," Ling Wei said, her voice carrying across the hall with perfect clarity. "You have all demonstrated potential, and we will provide you with the means to develop that potential into genuine power. However, you must understand that cultivation is not a gentle path. Many of you will fail to progress beyond the first realm. Some may be crippled by failed breakthroughs. A few of you may even perish in your pursuit of strength."

She paused, letting her words sink in. The atmosphere in the hall grew heavy.

"The sect will teach you the fundamentals of cultivation. We will provide you with techniques, resources, and guidance. But your growth ultimately depends on your own effort and talent. For those who truly excel, you may be promoted to inner disciple status within five years. For the exceptional few, you might even rise to the core disciples. But that path is merciless and unforgiving."

Ling Wei's eyes swept across the assembled disciples, seeming to focus briefly on each of them. When her gaze passed over Luo Chen, he felt a slight pause—as if she had sensed something unusual about him.

"Your training begins tomorrow at first light. You will attend lectures on the fundamentals of cultivation, practice basic qi circulation techniques, and train in sparring matches with your peers. The sect will provide housing, food, and basic training. Everything else—your dedication, your discipline, your growth—depends on you."

The ceremony concluded, and the disciples were dismissed to their quarters. As Luo Chen returned to his room, he felt a mixture of excitement and trepidation. His new life was beginning. Everything he had worked toward in secret at the orphanage was now leading to something greater.

He settled onto his bed—the first private bed he had ever slept in—and held the jade disk in his hands as he drifted off to sleep.
