Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5

Cracks Beneath Silence

Morning didn't feel like morning.

It felt like something unfinished.

Liu sat in her seat, her fingers loosely wrapped around a pen she hadn't used.

The classroom buzzed around her—voices, laughter, movement—but it all sounded distant. Like she was underwater.

Her body was here.

Her mind wasn't.

The pain from last night was gone.

But the memory of it wasn't.

It lingered.

Burning quietly beneath her skin.

"You look like you fought a demon and lost," Khushi dropped into the seat beside her, dramatically placing her bag on the table.

Liu didn't react immediately.

That was enough.

Khushi leaned closer. "Okay no, seriously. You look bad."

"I didn't sleep," Liu replied.

"Clearly."

Zia, sitting on the other side, glanced at her. Her gaze was softer, more observant.

"Is it just that?" she asked.

Liu hesitated.

Just for a second.

"…Yeah."

It wasn't convincing.

Zia didn't push.

But she didn't believe it either.

Across the room—

Ayushi watched.

Not obviously.

Not in a way anyone else would notice.

Her posture was relaxed, one arm resting lazily against the desk, fingers tapping lightly against the surface. But her eyes—

Her eyes were paying attention.

Measuring.

Calculating.

Her gaze lingered on Liu for a moment longer than necessary.

Then shifted away.

"Focus," the instructor's voice cut through the room.

A symbol formed mid-air, glowing faintly.

Magic theory.

Basic control.

Simple.

At least for most.

"Today, we're working on stabilization. No fluctuations. No emotional interference."

A few students groaned.

Khushi raised her hand immediately. "What if our emotions are naturally chaotic?"

"You will try anyway," the instructor replied flatly.

Kirti smiled faintly.

Zia didn't react.

Liu stared at the symbol.

Stabilization.

Control.

Her grip tightened slightly around her pen.

"Begin."

The room shifted.

Soft glows appeared as students summoned their magic—fire flickers, threads of water, small currents of air.

Controlled.

Measured.

Safe.

Liu hesitated.

Then slowly raised her hand.

A faint shimmer formed above her palm.

Weak.

Unstable.

It flickered.

She focused.

Tried to steady it.

But something felt… off.

Like her magic wasn't responding the way it used to.

Like it was resisting.

Or worse—

Growing.

Without her permission.

The shimmer twisted slightly.

Darkened.

Liu's breath hitched.

No.

Not here.

Not now.

She tried to pull it back.

Control it.

But the energy pulsed—

Sharp.

Unfamiliar.

For a split second—

The air around her felt heavy.

Like pressure building before a storm.

"Liu."

Zia's voice.

Low.

Careful.

"Stop."

Liu blinked.

The shimmer disappeared instantly.

As if it had never been there.

Silence.

No one else seemed to notice.

Except—

Ayushi.

The class moved on.

Like nothing had happened.

But Liu's hands felt cold.

And Zia didn't look away from her for the rest of the lesson.

After class—

The hallway filled quickly.

Noise returned.

Movement.

Normalcy.

Too much of it.

"I'm getting food," Khushi announced. "Anyone who says no is lying."

"I'll come," Kirti said softly.

Zia looked at Liu. "You?"

Liu shook her head. "I'll join later."

Khushi frowned. "Don't disappear."

"I won't."

That wasn't entirely true.

They left.

The hallway quieted.

And Liu—

Didn't move.

She stood there for a moment.

Then turned.

Not toward the exit.

But toward the empty corridor on the other side.

"Running away?"

The voice came from behind her.

Liu froze.

Then turned slowly.

Anaya.

She stood a few steps away, expression calm.

Too calm.

"I'm not running," Liu said.

Anaya hummed softly. "If you say so."

Silence stretched between them.

Then—

"You're not as stable as you look," Anaya added lightly.

Liu's expression hardened slightly. "What does that mean?"

Anaya stepped closer.

Not threatening.

Not friendly either.

Just… curious.

"Your magic," she said. "It's… different."

A pause.

"Uncontrolled."

Liu didn't respond.

But her silence said enough.

Anaya smiled.

Soft.

Perfect.

"Be careful," she said.

And then—

She walked past her.

Like nothing had happened.

Elsewhere—

Harley stood in the shadow of a pillar.

Watching.

She hadn't followed by accident.

Her gaze shifted between the two.

Calculating.

Silent.

Then her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Definitely suspicious…" she muttered again.

By the time Liu stepped outside—

The air felt heavier.

Or maybe it was just her.

She leaned lightly against the railing, closing her eyes for a second.

Trying to steady herself.

Trying to think.

But her thoughts wouldn't settle.

Too many pieces.

None of them fitting.

"You shouldn't isolate yourself."

Liu opened her eyes.

Ayushi stood a short distance away.

Calm.

Casual.

Like she had every right to be there.

Liu straightened slightly. "I wasn't—"

"You were," Ayushi cut in gently.

No accusation.

Just fact.

Silence.

Then—

Ayushi stepped closer.

Not too close.

Just enough.

"You're not handling it well," she said quietly.

Liu's eyes narrowed. "Handling what?"

A small pause.

Then Ayushi smiled.

Simple.

Unassuming.

"Whatever it is," she said.

Liu didn't respond.

Couldn't.

Because for a second—

It felt like Ayushi knew more than she should.

The wind shifted slightly.

Cold.

Unnatural.

Liu felt it again.

That same feeling.

From last night.

From earlier.

Stronger now.

Closer.

She turned sharply.

But there was nothing there.

Just empty space.

Ayushi watched her reaction carefully.

Then—

Looked away.

Like she hadn't seen anything at all.

Something was wrong.

Not just with Liu.

Not just with her magic.

But with everything around her.

And somewhere—

Just out of sight—

Something was watching back.
