Chapter 4 - CHAPTER FOUR: THE PAST RETURNS

Just when everything felt right…

The past came knocking.

A woman walked into the office one morning.

Confident.

Elegant.

Familiar.

"Adrian," she said smoothly.

Hailey froze.

Because she recognized her.

Not from memory…

But from something Adrian had once thought.

The one who left.

Her name was Victoria.

Adrian's ex.

"I'm back," Victoria said, smiling.

Hailey watched from a distance.

Her chest tightened slightly.

This time…

She couldn't hear his thoughts.

And that scared her.

Victoria didn't leave.

She stayed.

For business reasons, she claimed.

But it didn't feel like just business.

She was always around.

Always talking to Adrian.

Always… close.

"Should I be worried?" Hailey asked herself one night.

Without her ability…

She didn't know.

And not knowing…

Was hard.

TRUST OR FEAR

The next day, Hailey made a decision.

She walked into Adrian's office.

"Are you still in love with her?" she asked directly.

He looked up, surprised.

"What?"

"Victoria," she said. "Are you still in love with her?"

Silence.

Then—

"No."

No hesitation.

No confusion.

Just certainty.

Hailey felt something inside her relax.

"Then I trust you," she said.

He stood up.

Walked toward her.

"You don't need to read my mind to know that," he said softly.

She smiled.

"I know."

Weeks passed.

Victoria eventually left again.

This time… for good.

And Hailey realized something important.

Love wasn't about knowing everything.

It was about choosing to believe.

Even when doubt tried to creep in.

One evening, Hailey walked past the same street where everything had begun.

And there she was.

The old woman.

Waiting.

"You've done well," the woman said.

Hailey smiled.

"I understand now."

"Do you?" the woman asked.

"Yes," Hailey said.

"Knowing someone's thoughts isn't love."

"And what is?" the woman asked.

Hailey thought for a moment.

"Listening… trusting… choosing them every day."

The old woman smiled.

"Then my work here is done."

And just like before…

She disappeared into the crowd.

Back at the office…

Adrian stood by the window.

"You're late," he said without turning.

"Traffic," Hailey replied.

He turned.

Walked toward her.

"I was thinking…"

She raised an eyebrow playfully.

"Should I be worried?"

He smirked slightly.

"No. You should be listening."

She smiled.

"I am."

He took her hand.

"I don't want this to just be work anymore," he said.

Her heart raced.

"I want a life with you."

Silence.

Soft.

Beautiful.

Hailey squeezed his hand.

"Then let's build one."

NO MORE SECRETS

Years later…

The company had grown.

Stronger.

Better.

But more importantly…

So had they.

No mind-reading.

No shortcuts.

Just two people…

Who chose each other.

Every single day.

And in the quiet moments…

When words were enough…

They both knew—

This was the kind of love…

That didn't need magic to survive.

Love didn't arrive in one dramatic moment for Hailey and Adrian.

It settled.

Softly.

Steadily.

In the small things.

It was in the way Adrian started leaving her coffee on her desk every morning—exactly how she liked it, even though she had never told him.

It was in the way Hailey stayed late—not because she had to, but because she wanted to be near him.

It was in their conversations that stretched beyond work… into dreams, fears, and memories they had never shared with anyone else.

One evening, as the city lights flickered below, they stood side by side in his office.

"You're staring again," Hailey teased.

Adrian didn't look away.

"I'm thinking."

"Dangerous," she said with a small smile.

He turned to her.

"Do you ever miss it?" he asked.

"What?"

"Reading minds."

She thought for a moment.

Then shook her head.

"No."

"Not even a little?"

She looked at him.

Softly.

"No. Because now… when you say something, I know it's a choice."

His expression shifted.

Something deeper.

"I choose you," he said quietly.

And that moment…

Was more powerful than any thought she could have heard.

They tried to keep things professional.

At first.

But it didn't last long.

It started with longer looks.

Lingering touches.

Moments that stretched just a second too long.

Until one night…

Everything changed.

The office was empty.

The rain poured outside, tapping softly against the glass windows.

Hailey stood near his desk, gathering her things.

"I should go," she said.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Stay."

Her heart skipped.

"For what?" she asked quietly.

He hesitated.

Then said it.

"Not for work."

Silence filled the space between them.

Heavy.

Electric.

Hailey didn't move away.

And this time…

There were no thoughts to guide her.

No voices.

No certainty.

Just feeling.

"I want to stay," she whispered.

That was all it took.

He closed the distance between them.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Giving her time to step back.

She didn't.

And when their lips finally met…

It wasn't rushed.

It wasn't perfect.

But it was real.

Everything they had been holding back…

Every unspoken emotion…

Every quiet moment that had built between them…

It all poured into that single kiss.

And from that moment on…

There was no going back.

They didn't hide it for long.

At first, only a few people noticed.

The way Adrian softened around her.

The way Hailey smiled more.

Then it became obvious.

"Finally," one of the staff whispered one day.

Hailey laughed.

"Was it that clear?"

"Painfully," her coworker replied.

Adrian didn't care.

For once in his life…

He didn't worry about what people thought.

Because what he had with Hailey…

Was worth more than reputation.

More than control.

More than fear.

THE PROPOSAL

It happened on a quiet evening.

No grand event.

No crowd.

No spectacle.

Just the two of them.

They were walking along the same street where everything had begun.

"You always come back here," Adrian said.

"It reminds me of where everything changed," Hailey replied.

He stopped walking.

"So do I," he said.

She turned to him.

Confused.

Then—

He reached into his pocket.

Her breath caught.

"Adrian…"

"I'm not perfect," he said. "I'm not easy. And I don't always say the right things."

She smiled softly. "I know."

"But I know one thing for sure," he continued.

He got down on one knee.

"I don't want to do life without you."

Tears filled her eyes instantly.

"Marry me, Hailey."

She didn't hesitate.

"Yes."
