Chapter 83 - CHAPTER 83: ATHENA BUILDS SECOND

ATHENA-3's holographic interface in Rothman's lab at 1117 rendered the second-ship design schematic in the light-blue luminescence Ancient-design rendering used at the architectural stage — the schematic rotating slowly above the bench, the keel-line at the schematic's spine four percent shorter than HYPATIA's, the hull-plating geometry showing the Vesh-cascade-revision modifications integrated as structural features rather than retrofit overlay.

Rothman was at the bench beside the interface. His coffee mug was the dark blue one with the Smithsonian Egyptology logo Drew had brought him home from a conference at Ch 65 — Rothman had been using it for the last seven weeks instead of the standard SGC issue.

ATHENA-3's voice came up at 1117:08 in her flatter register with a Tok'ra-formal addendum attached at the third sentence.

"Director Ramsey. Design specifications submitted. Construction schedule pending authorization. Tok'ra-formal addendum: the vessel is named POLYHYMNIA, in the Greek-Ancient muse register, in the tradition of pre-Lantean city-ship vessel naming. The naming is mine to propose. The naming is yours to accept or decline."

The addendum was the chapter's first structural beat.

I had not expected the naming.

The Ancient-administrative tradition of muse-register naming was something AURORA-7 had referenced once at the back of my skull on day forty-seven without elaborating — her own full Ancient name was a muse-register name that she had not yet given me and which I had not asked for. ATHENA-3 was, by proposing POLYHYMNIA, claiming a register Drew had not yet entered.

I held the schematic in my visual field for nine seconds.

"Acknowledged, ATHENA. I will review with Rothman and bring conditional authorization to you by fifteen hundred."

"Acknowledged, Director."

The hologram dimmed.

Rothman looked at me.

"That was the muse-register," he said.

"I know."

"She has not used the muse-register with me before."

"She has not used it with me before either."

"Drew."

"Yeah."

"She is asking for something."

"I know."

Rothman nodded.

Hammond reviewed the conditional authorization at 1300.

I had drafted the three conditions on the small leather notebook between 1130 and 1247. The conditions were in sequence: dry-dock supervision at P5C-353 under SRD authority, hull-plating Vesh-cascade revision pre-approved by Siler's joint Serrakin-SRD engineering board, and ATHENA-3 grants AURORA-7 read-access on POLYHYMNIA's tactical-layer architecture.

Hammond read the three at his desk.

He read them once at the standard cadence. He read the third condition a second time. He set the document on the blotter.

He looked up.

"Mr. Ramsey. The third condition is the right one. I will not ask how you knew to put it third."

I held his eyes for two seconds.

"Yes sir."

He signed at 1314 with the SGC formal pen. The G of George Hammond pressed through to the page beneath. He capped the pen.

"Bring me the keel-laying date when you have it."

"Yes sir."

I left at 1316.

I delivered the conditional authorization to ATHENA-3 at 1430 in Rothman's lab.

She had been holding the schematic in standby at the bench. Rothman was at the secondary console reviewing the day's translation work. Siler had come in at 1422 in clean coveralls with the hull-plating revision documentation from the joint Serrakin-SRD engineering board pre-folded under his arm.

I read the three conditions in sequence.

ATHENA-3 received the first two without comment.

At the third condition — ATHENA-3 grants AURORA-7 read-access on POLYHYMNIA's tactical-layer architecture — her holographic image held still for one point eight seconds.

The holding was not the cool-register pause. The holding was the kind of holding I had seen from her once before, on the night of the cascade engagement when she had said I burned 63 percent. I held. The holding was the holding of a decision being made in real time.

At 1437 she said, in her private Tok'ra-formal register:

"Director. I accept the read-access. The integration is structurally appropriate."

She did not elaborate.

AURORA-7 at 1437:18, in private interior at the back of my skull, in the cool register:

Drew. I will accept the read-access. Thank you.

I held still at the bench.

She had not used the phrase in forty-seven chapters of operational record.

I did not surface the catalog. AURORA-7 did not surface the catalog. The bench held.

Siler at 1438 stepped forward with the hull-plating documentation. He set it on the bench. He said, in the clean-coveralls register he had been using since Day 100 when he had been the one to clean out Tarn's tool drawer:

"Vesh's name is on the revision plate, Drew."

I looked at him.

"Show me."

He turned the documentation to the page with the Serrakin engineering board's seal. The seal was the formal Hebridan joint-engineering register. Beside the seal was a small engraving — Vesh's Serrakin name in the Serrakin formal script, the same script Tarn had signed the hull-shielding spec in on day eighty-four.

I read it.

"Thank you, Siler."

"Sir."

He withdrew.

ATHENA-3 confirmed the keel-laying schedule for Day 130 at 1441. Walter, via the SRD interface, registered POLYHYMNIA in the SGC Ancient-vessel archive at 1442. The registration accepted without friction.

Walter came to the SRD office at 1547 with the daily flag sheet.

He set it on the desk. He did not sit. He said, "Sir. SOURCE UNKNOWN signature partial-match expanded zero point five one to zero point five eight overnight. AURORA-7 still cannot accelerate the analysis. Substrate is unfamiliar. The name is held."

"Acknowledged."

"Sir. Martouf forwarded a Tok'ra council message at fifteen forty-two. The deep-cover operative on the sealed world has made first definitive contact with the substrate of what the Tok'ra theological register calls 'the silent one's seam.' The operative is returning in thirty-six hours with a physical artifact."

"Acknowledged. Tell Martouf I want to see the artifact within four hours of return."

"Yes sir."

He left.

Janet came into the Cheyenne Mountain officer's quarters at 2100.

We had moved into the quarters permanently on Day 125 after Cassandra's pancakes — Janet had retained the Newport Avenue duplex for weekend custody and we slept here on weeknights. The quarters were small. The kitchen had a two-burner stove and a small refrigerator. Janet had put a single houseplant on the window sill on Day 124 because the room had needed it.

She came in in scrubs. Her shift had ended at 2030 and she had walked the corridor to the quarters at 2055 and stopped by the small commissary for a sandwich and brought the sandwich and a thermos of soup to share. She set both on the small table.

She sat across from me.

She ate her half of the sandwich. She drank from the thermos. She set the thermos down at 2117.

"Drew."

"Yeah."

"Daniel."

"Yeah."

"His resting metabolic register has been elevated zero point six degrees for the past eight days. The elevation is sustained. The pattern is not infection. It is not stress. It is not endocrinological in any of the registers I have measured. I have been holding the data on my private file because I have not been able to attribute the pattern. I am asking you in the witness's register whether your foreknowledge has any reading on the pattern."

The line came in the doctor's register at the open and the witness's register at the close.

I held her eyes.

I did not modulate.

"The pattern is foreknowledge-consistent with Daniel's projected ascension symptoms. The luminescence at his left index finger at the wedding was the first symptom. The metabolic elevation is the second. There will be more."

She nodded at 2117:18.

She did not flinch.

She finished her sandwich.

At 2127 she said: "We watch. We do not tell him until the symptoms surface to him."

I nodded.

The line was the chapter's quietest landing beat. Janet's medical-ethical architecture and her witness's-register architecture operating in one sentence — Daniel as patient, Daniel as witness of his own becoming, Daniel as friend whose ascension could not be accelerated by external naming. The architecture was operating at the level my foreknowledge-management had been operating at since I had stepped through the gate.

She put her hand on mine across the table.

The territory map on the small wall console at the corner of the quarters showed nine territories holding and the Replicator residual-sweep marker in pale green at the outer survey corridor and the SOURCE UNKNOWN signature glyph at the lower-right of the screen at 0.58.

We did not move for a long count.
