The fused-matrix first pulse fired at 0233:08.
The HYPATIA bridge's primary tactical display lit up in the cascade pattern Sam and ATHENA-3 had spent twelve nights refining since the cracking of the matrix on day one hundred and four — a branched fractal expansion across the strategic overlay that drew its first eleven seconds in the soft-blue Asgard archival register and resolved into the Earth-amber tactical register at the cascade's propagation edge. The pattern would, in the next three centuries of Asgard fleet doctrine, be catalogued as Earth pattern. I did not know this. AURORA-7 did. She did not tell me.
My left thumb started the slow circular motion against my right forefinger at 0233:11.
It did not stop until 0331:45.
Forty-seven Replicator blocks shut down structurally in the first eleven seconds.
ATHENA-3 in my right ear in the steady tactical register she had been holding since 0140. Cascade propagating. Hive node forty-one cycling toward consensus break. AURORA-7 in my left ear, recovered to her cool register, holding the joint matrix coordination at the carrier frequency that yesterday had suppressed her by eighteen percent and which Sam's countermeasure work overnight had band-shifted around. Front edge contracting at twelve percent per minute, Director.
The hive consensus broke at 0301:14.
The bridge fell silent.
Jacob, in the copilot chair, looked across at me. The look was four seconds long. Jacob did not speak during the four seconds. He let the silence sit on the bridge to mark what had happened. Then he said, in the flight-command register, "Drew. The core is yours to call."
I did not call.
Sam's voice came up on the remote-operation feed at 0331:09.
"Sir. The math is clean."
It was her closest line in three years to acknowledging anything about my interior. The line entered the SGC archive at the protocol-record timestamp by the standard relay. I did not respond directly. I let the line stand.
At 0331:18 I said, into the bridge comm: "Asgard, your call on the core."
The bridge crew turned, slightly, toward the port-aft station where Thor's hologram had been holding observation posture since 0140. Thor's eyes moved across the strategic display. The pause was three-quarters of a second.
"We will assist."
The Asgard vessels at the deep-engagement vector engaged the command core at 0332:09. The cascade I had handed them propagated into the core's distributed-consensus substrate at a rate AURORA-7's joint-matrix coordination had not been required to anchor. The core registered as structurally broken on the strategic map at 0331:42 — fourteen seconds after my deference, four seconds after Thor's acceptance, a cascade arc faster than ATHENA-3 had projected.
The bridge cheered.
I did not.
The cheer ran for four seconds. Jacob did not join it. Selmak in his throat did not surface. Walter, in my ear from the secondary command feed at Cheyenne Mountain, was silent.
I said, at 0331:18, on top of the cheer:
"Casualty board."
The bridge quieted.
Walter's voice came up at 0331:31.
"Sir. Preliminary count. One hundred forty-seven named. Twenty-three unrecovered."
I did not move for fourteen seconds.
The bridge held the silence. ATHENA-3 catalogued the silence's frequency at the back of my skull in the same register she had catalogued the briefing room's air-handling hum on day one hundred nine. The register was the same. The room was different. The cost was different. The cost was larger.
At 0331:45 I said: "Acknowledged. HYPATIA, hold position. Prometheus, sweep the corridor. Asgard, your call on the core."
My left thumb stopped the circular motion.
The bridge began the standard post-engagement protocols. Jacob did not look at me again. Sam's remote-feed line cut at 0334. Thor's hologram dimmed at 0337. The Asgard vessels moved into the command core sweep at the cadence their fleet-doctrine standardized for confirmed-structural-break engagements. Jack on Prometheus reported the corridor sweep ongoing at 0341 and took four additional casualties at 0357 in a cluster reformation he handled inside three minutes; the four were now part of the one hundred forty-seven.
I left the bridge at 0407.
The HYPATIA officer's mess at 0407 was empty.
The lighting was the warm Ancient-tier baseline ATHENA-3 had built the deck to operate in. The small port-side window looked out on the engagement perimeter where the strategic display had been red two hours ago and was now the green of confirmed-clean space. The mourning crystal Jacob had given me at 0823 yesterday was still in my inside pocket against the Tollan ring.
On the small table by the port-side window was the World's Okayest Consultant mug.
It was the second one Walter had given me. The first had chipped at the rim during the cold-storage week on day fifty-six and Walter had replaced it the next morning without saying anything. The second mug had the same printed lettering and the same handle and a small chip on the inside rim from the day forty-two coffee-pot mishap that I had asked Walter not to repair because the chip had become the way I knew the mug from any other.
I had not brought the mug to HYPATIA.
Walter had sent it.
The protocol-record entry on the secondary console — I read it at 0410 — said 0202 hours: emergency supply transport HYPATIA-bound, manifest item 47, World's Okayest Consultant mug, item routed by Master Sergeant Harriman, no note attached.
Walter had sent it at 0202. The cascade had not yet fired. The casualty count had not yet been read. Walter had sent the mug to HYPATIA two hours and twenty-nine minutes before I would need it because Walter had been holding the operational pattern of the engagement since 0140 and had known where I would be at 0407.
I picked up the mug at 0411.
The handle's weight against my palm was the weight I knew. The chip on the rim was the chip I knew. The ceramic was room-temperature. Walter had not filled it.
I did not drink from it.
I held the mug in my right hand at the table for four minutes twenty-three seconds. The crystal in my pocket pressed against the Tollan ring at a specific angle through the fabric of my jacket. My left hand was on the table beside the casualty list. AURORA-7 catalogued the four minutes twenty-three seconds in the post-engagement audit at 0431 as integration-grade pause. She did not name what was integrating.
At 0511:23 I set the mug back on the table.
I did not stand for the next forty-seven seconds.
I stood at 0512:10.
