Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Price Of Power

The rain had begun to slow.

Zarek Kaine stood alone in the alley, his breathing steady as the last echoes of the fight faded into silence. The two bodies on the ground remained motionless, their strength completely drained.

For a moment, nothing moved.

Then—

A faint sound broke the silence.

Footsteps.

Zarek's eyes shifted slightly.

Someone was approaching.

From the far end of the alley, a figure appeared.

An older man, dressed in simple but clean robes, stepped into view. His gaze swept across the scene—the broken ground, the fallen boys, and finally, Zarek.

He paused.

"…What happened here?" the man asked calmly.

Zarek didn't answer immediately.

His eyes remained cold, observing the newcomer carefully.

The man stepped closer, his expression tightening slightly as he examined the unconscious boys.

"They're alive… but their energy…" he muttered.

His gaze returned to Zarek.

"…You did this?"

Zarek's silence was enough of an answer.

The man studied him for a long moment.

Then, quietly—

"You're not normal."

The words carried no accusation.

Only certainty.

Zarek's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…What do you want?"

The man smiled faintly.

"Answers. But I doubt you have them yourself."

For a brief moment, the alley fell silent again.

Then the system spoke.

[New Threat Detected]

[Energy Level: Unknown]

[Caution Advised]

Zarek's body tensed slightly.

Unknown.

That meant danger.

The man noticed.

"…You can feel it, can't you?" he said.

Zarek said nothing.

The man straightened, his gaze sharpening.

"You're different from them. Different from most."

He paused, then added—

"If you stay here, you'll die."

Zarek's expression didn't change.

"…Why?"

"Because power attracts attention," the man replied. "And what you used here… is not something that should exist in a place like this."

Zarek's eyes darkened.

"…Explain."

The man chuckled softly.

"Straight to the point. I like that."

He turned slightly, looking toward the city beyond the alley.

"This world isn't as simple as you think. Strength is everything, yes—but not all strength is the same."

He glanced back at Zarek.

"And yours… is dangerous."

The system interrupted again.

[Warning]

[Unknown variable detected]

[Information restricted]

Zarek frowned slightly.

"…Restricted?"

For the first time, uncertainty appeared in his eyes.

The man noticed.

"…So even you don't fully understand what you've gained."

Zarek remained silent.

But inside—

The question had already formed.

What is this system?

The man stepped closer.

"Listen carefully," he said. "If you want to survive, you need control. Strength without control will destroy you."

Zarek's gaze hardened.

"…Then show me."

The man paused.

Then, slowly, a faint smile appeared.

"Interesting."

He raised one hand slightly.

A faint ripple of energy spread through the air.

Unlike Zarek's power, this one felt… stable.

Refined.

Zarek's eyes sharpened.

"This," the man said, "is cultivation."

The air seemed to respond to him, bending slightly around his presence.

Zarek watched closely.

For the first time—

He saw the difference.

His power devoured.

This power… controlled.

The man lowered his hand.

"If you want to live beyond today, come with me."

Zarek hesitated.

Behind him lay the alley.

Weakness.

Death.

Ahead…

Something unknown.

The system spoke again.

[New Path Detected]

[Evaluation Required]

Zarek closed his eyes briefly.

Then opened them again.

"…I'll come."

The man nodded.

"Good. Then from this moment on… your real journey begins."

The rain finally stopped.

And Zarek Kaine stepped out of the alley—

Not as a victim.

But as something new.
