Chapter 4 - Chapter 03: A Dance With The Queen

Clara swam slowly back toward the glowing lights of the royal palace, her heart still heavy from the conversation with Cleo. Her mind spun with thoughts and doubts, should she talk to her parents now ? Could they really change their minds ? The weight of the crown felt like a physical burden on her head, even though she wasn't wearing it yet. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the look of pure agony on Cleo's face, a look that made her feel like she was the villain in her own sister's story.

But as she reached the coral gates of the ballroom, loud music and cheerful voices greeted her like a tidal wave. The celebration was still going strong. Mermaids twirled gracefully through the water, their tails shimmering like rainbows under the magical light of the chandeliers.

Mermen clapped and played glowing seashell drums while others danced in wide circles, their laughter echoing against the pearl-encrusted walls. The palace sparkled brighter than ever, glowing pearls floating gently around the high ceilings like tiny, submerged moons.

Clara tried to swim quietly through the crowd, hoping to slip past without being noticed, but that didn't last long.

"There she is !"

"The future Queen !"

"Princess Clara ! Congratulations !"

Before she could even blink, a group of mermaids swam up to her, smiling wide and showering her with hugs and excited squeals. They smelled of sea salt and sweet jasmine, their joy so bright it almost felt blinding.

"You're glowing, princess Clara !" one said, pulling her into a spin.

"She's going to be the most beautiful Queen we've ever had !"

Clara smiled politely, nodding as she thanked them, but her eyes kept searching the crowd for a way out. She felt like she was wearing a mask, pretending to be happy while her family was falling apart in the shadows. "Thank you so much, but I need to...."

"CLARAAAAAA !!" two voices shrieked as a flash of color zipped through the water and smacked right into her.

Clara burst into a laugh as she was suddenly wrapped up in two very tight hugs, one from Pebs, her favorite bright orange-and-purple fish with big round eyes and an even bigger personality and the other from her seahorse with gold spots and a wild mane of hair who immediately twirled around her.

"Mini ! Pebs !" Clara giggled, hugging them both. "You're squishing me !"

Pebs blew bubbles excitedly, her fins wiggling at top speed. "We knew you were special ! I told Pebs, didn't I ? I said Clara's gonna be Queen one day !"

Mini the seahorse flipped and danced in the water, his golden spots gleaming. "And now you are ! You have to do the Queen wave ! Like this, look !" He tried a funny royal wave and ended up flipping upside down, his tiny tail tangled in a stray piece of seaweed.

Clara laughed, her cheeks finally warming again as she spun in a small circle with them. For a moment, the pain of Cleo's words faded, replaced by the simple, honest love of her smallest friends. "I missed you two so much," she said softly, stroking Pebs's smooth scales.

Mini nuzzled her cheek. "We missed you too, but now you're going to be super busy and important. Don't forget about us !"

"Never," Clara promised, her heart swelling with a mix of love and sadness. She gave them one last hug, then looked around, the urgency returning to her chest. "I really need to find my parents. I need to talk to..."

Before she could finish her sentence, a blur of flowing tails surrounded her. "Claraaaa !" Ariel, Shelly and Kelly called out, grabbing her arms and tugging her playfully. Her sisters looked stunning, their hair decorated with precious gems and their faces lit up with genuine pride.

There was no jealousy here, only the deep, sweet bond of sisters who would do anything for one another.

"Where are you going, little miss Queen-to-be ?" Ariel asked, giving her a cheeky smile and nudging her shoulder.

"I need to..."

"Nope !" Shelly giggled, spinning her around so fast her hair trailed behind her like a white silk ribbon. "Not yet ! We have someone you have to see."

"Someone special," Kelly added with a sing-song voice, her eyes twinkling with a secret.

Clara blinked, her confusion momentarily overriding her worry. "Who ?"

They didn't answer. Instead, they guided her across the glowing dance floor, weaving through the guests who parted like the tide for the royal sisters. They stopped at someone standing near a glowing coral pillar.

And there he was.

Kai.

He turned when he saw her and for a second, the entire room seemed to go quiet. Kai was more than just handsome, he was breathtaking. He stood tall and strong, his shoulders broad and powerful, the kind of strength that made Clara feel completely safe just by being near him. His chest was firm and well-defined, showing the marks of a skilled guardian, yet he carried himself with a quiet grace.

His soft blue eyes sparked like the surface of the sea at sunrise, a deep, welcoming blue that seemed to see right into her soul. His sandy brown hair floated gently around his head, messy in a way that made him look rugged and lovely all at once.

His tail was a masterpiece of nature, light silver and shimmering like stardust, each scale reflecting the palace lights in a way that made him look almost divine. He wore a simple but elegant shell necklace that highlighted the tan of his skin and had a shy, crooked smile that made Clara's heart flutter every time she saw him.

"Kai !" Clara gasped, smiling wide.

"Hey, Clara," he said, his voice warm and calm, like the steady pull of the tide.

She swam straight into his arms, hugging him tight. He felt solid and warm, his arms wrapping around her with a protective strength that made the rest of the world vanish. "When did you get back ?"

"Just this morning," he replied, pulling back just enough to look into her eyes. "I didn't want to miss your big day. You look... incredible, Clara."

Clara pulled back and looked at him with a soft grin, her face heating up. "I can't believe you're here."

"I brought you something," he said, holding out a small box made of glittering shell.

Clara opened it slowly, her breath catching. Inside was a tiny glowing starfish charm. It pulsed gently with a soft, pink light, like a heartbeat. "It's beautiful…" she whispered, touching the cool surface of the charm.

"It's for luck," Kai said, his voice dropping to a soft murmur. "For when you feel nervous. Like now, maybe ?" He reached out, his thumb grazing her hand and the touch sent a jolt of electricity through her.

Clara smiled, deeply touched. Kai always knew exactly what she was feeling, even when she tried to hide it. "Thank you, Kai. It's perfect."

As they chatted, the warmth of his presence began to heal the cold ache in her chest. But then, Clara glanced over Kai's shoulder and saw her mother laughing with some of the elder guests. Her heart tugged again.

"I need to talk to my parents about..."

"Not yet," Kai interrupted gently, taking her hand in his large, warm one. He looked at her with such devotion that she felt her knees go weak. "Your Highness, may I have this dance ?"

Clara blushed, a shy smile spreading across her lips. "Seriously ?"

He smiled, a playful glint in his blue eyes as he bowed low. "Come on. One dance ?"

She nodded, letting him lead her to the center of the dance floor, her fingers laced with his as the music swelled into a beautiful, romantic melody.
