Chapter 9 - Alignment

The lights dimmed for the first time in days. Not darkness—just softer. Zane blinked up at the ceiling, eyes squinting slightly as if the change itself felt unfamiliar. "…Is this what peace feels like?" he whispered.

Mira, lying on her bed, smirked faintly. "Don't get used to it."

Tala exhaled slowly, her shoulders finally relaxing after what felt like endless tension. "At least they're giving us a moment…"

Kael didn't sit. He didn't rest. He stood near the wall, watching everything with quiet intensity. "They're not," he said. A brief pause followed. "They're waiting."

Erza sat forward, elbows on her knees, hands loosely clasped as her mind worked through the pattern. They pushed Yuki. They watched the reaction. Now… they observe recovery. Slowly, her gaze shifted toward the corner of the room.

Yuki stood there, still distant—but not the same.

Erza rose and walked over, calm and deliberate. Zane noticed immediately and muttered under his breath, "…oh this is going to be awkward."

Mira nudged him lightly. "Shh. Let it happen."

Erza stopped a few steps away from Yuki—not too close, not threatening. "Your movements changed today," she said evenly.

Yuki didn't respond.

"You were faster," Erza continued. "But less controlled. Your breathing was uneven."

Silence lingered.

Zane leaned toward Mira. "Is she… analyzing her right now?"

Mira whispered back, "That's her version of caring."

Finally, Yuki spoke, her voice quiet but firm. "I didn't lose control."

Erza didn't argue. "You lost precision."

Yuki's jaw tightened. "That's not the same."

"No," Erza agreed after a brief pause. "It's worse."

The room stilled instantly.

"Okay, that sounded rude—" Zane started.

Mira elbowed him. "Let her cook."

Yuki turned then, her eyes sharp again—but calmer than before. "You think you're better?"

Erza shook her head. "No." A pause. "I think we're incomplete."

That caught Yuki off guard. A slight frown formed. "Explain."

Erza gestured lightly. "You move without hesitation." Then she tapped her temple. "I think before moving." Her gaze shifted briefly toward the others. "He reacts," she nodded toward Zane. "She stabilizes," toward Tala. "They analyze," toward Mira and Noor. "He executes," toward Kael.

She paused, letting it settle. "Separately… it fails."

Silence stretched across the room.

"Together?" Yuki asked quietly.

Erza met her gaze. "It works."

From the side, Noor's soft voice slipped in. "Only if we allow it." She leaned casually against the wall, watching them all. "Trust isn't something you assign. It's something you choose."

Kael spoke next, his tone steady. "And if someone makes the wrong choice?"

Mira answered before Noor could. "Then we adapt. That's literally the point of all this."

Zane raised his hand slightly. "Can I choose to trust food if it ever appears?"

Tala smiled warmly. "I'll make sure you eat first."

Zane visibly relaxed. "Finally. Someone reliable."

A quiet moment followed. Not uncomfortable. Just… different.

Then the speaker crackled to life. "Simulation begins in five minutes."

Zane groaned. "There it is. Peace: gone."

Mira pushed herself up. "Five minutes is generous. I'm impressed."

Kael stepped forward slightly, drawing their attention. "Listen." They did. "We don't repeat today's mistake." His eyes flicked briefly to Yuki. "No solo actions."

Yuki didn't respond—but she didn't argue either.

Kael's gaze shifted to Erza. "You lead."

The words landed quietly, but with weight.

Zane blinked. "…Wait—since when?"

Mira smirked. "Since she started telling you where to move and you didn't die."

"…Fair point."

Erza didn't answer immediately. Leadership. Not assigned—earned. "I'll guide," she said at last. A brief pause followed. "But we move together."

Tala nodded. "Together."

Zane raised his hand again. "Together. Preferably alive."

A faint smile crossed Mira's face. Even Yuki shifted—just slightly—closer to the group. Not fully. But enough.

The doors opened, revealing a completely new environment. Not a training hall this time, but a structured space—walls, corridors, shadows stretching across narrow paths.

Zane lowered his voice. "Okay… this is definitely worse."

Mira scanned the surroundings. "Close-quarters simulation."

Kael nodded. "Limited visibility. Multiple threat angles."

Erza stepped forward slightly, her voice calm and steady. "Stay within range. Zane—center."

"Why me?!" he whispered loudly.

"Because you panic outward," she replied.

"…That is disturbingly accurate."

"Yuki—left flank."

There was a brief pause. Yuki looked at her—then nodded once. Small, but significant.

"Kael—front." He moved without hesitation.

"Tala—support behind Zane."

"Got it."

"Mira, Noor—watch angles."

"With pleasure," Noor said softly.

Mira cracked her knuckles lightly. "Let's see if this works."

A faint sound echoed ahead. Movement.

Erza raised her hand. Everyone froze instantly.

Zane whispered, "I hate this already."

A shadow flickered. Fast.

"Front," Kael said.

"Left," Yuki added.

"Right," Mira finished.

Zane's voice rose in panic. "HOW MANY ARE THERE?!"

Erza didn't raise her voice. "Three." A pause.

"On my signal."

Silence followed. Breath held. Muscles tense.

"Now."

They moved. Not perfectly. Not smoothly. But together.

And this time—no one hesitated alone.

Above them, Nexus observed in silence. "Unit coordination?"

A pause.

"Improving."

Inside the simulation, something had shifted. They weren't just surviving anymore.

They were learning how to stand—

as one.
