Chapter 199 - Chapter 199: The Scalpel's Bargain

One week later.

The disk tore through the last layer of storm clouds. The blizzards of the North Blue were long behind them, replaced by air so clean at ten thousand meters it felt almost unreal.

For the entire journey, Law and the Heart Pirates had been confined to this small metal disk vessel, one of Jeno's creations. The damaged Polar Tang floated behind them, suspended by Leonora's Float Float Fruit, looking like a yellow whale dragged into the sky against its will.

The first two days, Bepo had practically wrapped himself around the disk's central pillar and refused to let go.

Shachi and Penguin hadn't been much better.

They were a submarine crew. Skimming the seabed, dodging warships, threading through dark currents, that was the world they knew. Now two monsters had been flying them through open air for an entire week.

The terror had faded.

What remained was numbness.

Law sat in a corner of the disk, back against a cargo crate, Kikoku laid across his knees. His wounds had been treated, his stamina mostly restored.

He hadn't tried to escape.

There was no point.

Leonora and Shack were right there on the disk with them. Over the past week, Law had observed them closely. Off the battlefield, Leonora wasn't the cold blade she had been in the blizzard. She even cooked for everyone using the disk's stored provisions, her movements efficient, her knife work exacting, her standards for heat and timing almost obsessive. She was blunt, direct, and occasionally complained that Shack ate like an animal.

But Law couldn't forget what she looked like in a fight.

Cold. Sharp. A predator locking onto prey.

Shack was even quieter. He spent most of his time sitting cross-legged at the disk's edge, Samehada pressed against his back like a dark shell, silent and still.

Diamante, Baby 5, and Buffalo were still inside the mechanical sea beast's pocket dimension. Law didn't know their exact condition. But if the order had been to take them alive and Shack hadn't spat them back out, they were still breathing. Just stored like cargo inside a monster's belly.

That fact alone was enough to keep every member of the Heart Pirates quiet.

"We're here."

Leonora's voice cut through the wind.

Law lifted his head.

The disk punched through the white cloud layer. What spread before them was a pure white sea, impossibly soft, stretching out to every horizon. Sunlight scattered across the White-White Sea in flecks of pale gold.

In the distance, a massive island floated above the cloud ocean.

Ancient forests. Golden ruins. Colossal vines that pierced through the sky itself. Ringing the main island, several barren landmasses hung suspended in the air.

Bepo stared, his voice small. "Captain..."

"The sky really does have a sea."

Law stared too.

A sky island. He'd heard the legends. But hearing about it and seeing it were two different things.

In that moment, he understood. The Eclipse Pirates hadn't just found some remote island to hide on. They had placed their stronghold in a sky that most of the world would never reach in their lifetime.

No ordinary pirates could find this place.

No Marine fleet could sail here.

No World Government pursuit could stretch its fingers ten thousand meters into the air.

This wasn't just a hideout. It was a fortress naturally walled off from the entire world.

The disk carried the Polar Tang slowly across the White-White Sea. Before long, dozens of sky island warriors appeared on the horizon, patrolling on skates powered by Wind Dials.

Their leader, Wyper, spotted Leonora and Shack and immediately lowered his weapon. "Lady Leonora. Lord Shack."

His eyes swept over Law and the others on the disk, then shifted to the white submarine floating behind them. "Should we detain these people?"

"The captain wants to see them."

Leonora's tone was offhand.

"Bring the submarine in too. Let Jeno see if she can be repaired."

Wyper nodded without further questions and signaled the patrol to clear a path.

The metal disk passed the Golden Bell and began its descent toward the black warship anchored at the heart of the cloud sea.

Law saw the Eclipse for the first time.

She was a ship that didn't belong to this era. A dark hull resting silently on the White-White Sea, her Vermilion Bird figurehead rising like a blade carved to split the heavens. No sails. No traditional gun ports. Only cold armored plating covering every surface, and compact weapons systems tucked into the seams of her hull.

A handful of small robots moved across her deck, hauling supplies.

The disk settled gently onto the Eclipse's deck. Leonora set the Polar Tang down on an adjacent flat space.

A three-meter-tall engineer emerged from the lower decks almost immediately. His eyes lit up the moment he saw the submarine.

"Whoa ha ha ha! A submarine?"

Jeno rapped his knuckles against the outer hull and grinned. "Port ballast tank breach, one busted propeller set, blast fractures on the shell. Minor issues. Give me half a day and she'll be seaworthy again."

The Heart Pirates exchanged stunned looks.

Half a day?

That submarine was their home. They had figured it would take a professional dry dock at least two weeks to patch her up. This man had knocked twice and called it an afternoon job.

Shachi muttered under his breath, "Is this place even real?"

Penguin answered just as quietly. "Has anything been normal since we got dragged into the sky?"

Bepo immediately whispered, "Sorry..."

"Why are YOU apologizing?!"

On the main deck, Carina lounged in a deck chair, a sorted intelligence report in her hands. Buggy leaned in from the side, eyeing Samehada with obvious fascination.

"Heh heh heh. I heard you brought back three Devil Fruit users? Any of them got something fun and strong? Think I could get a companion beast weapon like that?"

Carina didn't look up. "Quiet, red nose."

"WHO'S GOT A RED NOSE?!"

Buggy's detached head rocketed into the air, screaming.

Law watched all of this, his expression complicated. This wasn't what he had pictured.

There was no suffocating pressure. No rigid hierarchy. Just chaos and noise and sunlight on the deck.

"Law."

Leonora turned to him. "Come with me."

Law glanced back at Bepo and the others. Carina lifted her head, rattling the intel papers lightly. "Relax. Your crew will wait in the deck rest area. Jeno's got your ship covered. As for you, the captain wants to meet you first."

Law was silent for a moment. Then he followed Leonora toward the bow.

A beach chair had been set up there.

A tall, powerfully built young man sat in it, an unbuttoned dark red windbreaker draped over his shoulders, a half-peeled orange in one hand. A sheathed longsword rested at his hip.

He wasn't projecting Haki.

He wasn't holding any kind of commanding posture.

He was just sitting there, casual, like he had all the time in the world.

But the instant Law drew close, his body went taut on pure instinct.

Dangerous.

Lethally dangerous.

It was the same feeling a doctor might get if he walked up to his dissection table and found the corpse staring back at him, breathing.

Ace looked up at him.

"Trafalgar Law."

He smiled.

"Finally, we meet."

Law stopped walking. His fingers found Kikoku's hilt. "What do you want from me?"

Ace didn't answer right away. He tossed an orange slice into his mouth.

"North Blue. Sole survivor of Flevance. Taken in by the Donquixote Family as a kid. Fled with Corazon. Currently captain of the Heart Pirates, Ope Ope no Mi user, running and hiding across the North Blue in a submarine."

Every sentence Ace spoke made Law's eyes go a shade colder.

By the end, Law's grip on Kikoku was bone-tight. "You've been investigating me."

"I'd heard bits and pieces about you before."

Ace's voice was lazy, unconcerned. "Later, I had Carina flag a few promising names. You were on the list."

Law didn't respond.

Ace set the remaining half of the orange on the table and leaned forward slightly.

"I think you've got potential. Guts. Talent. Brains."

"Unfortunately, your strength doesn't match."

Law's face went completely cold.

Ace continued as if he hadn't noticed.

"Doflamingo knows you're in the North Blue now. He knows you never gave up. This time it was Diamante. Next time, he might not send just one executive. Your submarine's been made. If Doflamingo decides to close the net, you won't stay hidden for long."

Law was silent.

That was the one truth he least wanted to face. He had thought he could stay buried for a few more years. Gather strength. Gather intel. Wait for Doflamingo to show an opening. But the chaos the Eclipse Pirates had kicked up had set the whole sea into motion early. Doflamingo had moved early too.

Law was out of time.

"So?"

Law lifted his head and fixed his stare on Ace. "What do you want from me?"

Ace grinned. "I like you."

Law frowned. "What?"

"I said, I like you."

Ace rose to his feet. His shadow fell over Law, tall and heavy.

"You've got brains. Talent. A Devil Fruit. A spine. And more than any of that, you've got a heart that wants to drag one particular enemy down to hell. A man like that, if he survives long enough, makes one hell of a sharp knife."

Law's voice was ice. "You want me to be your knife?"

"Right now, you're not qualified."

Ace answered without hesitation.

Law's pupils tightened.

Ace's grin widened. "Don't make that face like you're about to start swinging. I'm stating a fact. Right now, your body's weak. You haven't even touched the threshold of Haki. You can't protect your own crew. Diamante alone pushed you to the brink. With what you've got, killing Doflamingo isn't even a conversation. You don't have the standing to stand in front of him yet."

The wind across the deck fell still for one breath.

Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin stood frozen a short distance away, too tense to speak.

Law's knuckles whitened on Kikoku's hilt.

He didn't argue. Because Ace was right.

Ace raised a hand and pointed toward the distant floating islands, where a low rumble of impacts echoed across the cloud sea.

"There are training grounds here. Doctors who can beat you half to death and patch you back up. Haki specialists. Martial techniques. As much time as you need to grow, protected from the world. And a collection of monsters who will push you past every limit you think you have."

"You want to kill Doflamingo."

"I can give you that strength."

Law's eyes flickered. "Why?"

Ace looked down at him.

"Because you interest me. Because Doflamingo doesn't. Because my enemies are the World Government, the Celestial Dragons, and every rotten piece of the old order that's been stepping on my neck."

His voice wasn't loud. But it pressed down on the deck like a blade still hot from the forge.

"The more people I have under me, the better. Fighters. Killers. Thinkers. People who, someday, can carve a clean slice through the arteries of the World Government."

"I want all of them."

He held Law's gaze. His dark eyes burned with undisguised ambition.

"You're a doctor. You're also a scalpel."

"I don't mind sharpening you a little."

"When you're finally qualified to stand in front of Doflamingo, I'll send you to take his head yourself."

Law was quiet for a long time.

The cloud sea churned in the distance. The rumble from the training islands rolled across the deck, deep and steady.

He looked down at his own hands.

These hands had saved lives. They had taken lives. But right now, they still weren't strong enough. Not strong enough to cut through that nightmare smile of Doflamingo's.

"The price?"

Law's voice came out low.

Ace smiled.

"Until you cut Doflamingo's head off, you fly the Eclipse flag. I give you shelter, training, and a path to get stronger. You and your crew follow my orders. This isn't charity."

"It's an investment."

Law met Ace's eyes.

Seconds passed. Then, slowly, he spoke.

"The Heart Pirates will fly the Eclipse flag. Temporarily. We remain an affiliate crew. And until Doflamingo is dead, my objective doesn't change."

Ace walked up to him and laid a hand on his shoulder.

The grip wasn't tight. But it pressed down like a mountain.

"Deal."

Ace looked down at Law and grinned.

"Welcome to the Eclipse."

"Starting today, you train with Urouge and the others. You train until you're strong enough to cut Doflamingo's head off."
