After watching Onizuka leave, Date opened the black plastic bag in his hand and discovered that it contained the student handbook, an ID card for entering and leaving the police academy, and a dormitory key.
When Morofushi saw Date take out the ID card, he secretly glanced at the age printed on it.
'Hmm… he really is the same age as me. Class Leader Date looks so mature.'
Jinpei picked up his handbook. Noticing a strange smell, he brought it close to his nose and sniffed it. Curling his lips in disbelief, he said,
"Ah… it smells like tobacco. Don't tell me this plastic bag was left over from buying cigarettes."
"No need to doubt it, it definitely was," Hagiwara said with a grin, pinching a small strand of tobacco between his fingers. "Evidence found."
Rei packed away his belongings and turned to his two close friends.
"Hurry back and organize your luggage. The handbook says we have to wake up at 6 a.m. Ritsu, you'd better pay special attention to that."
Seeing the schedule gave Ritsu, who loved sleeping in, a headache. Waking up at six was torture, and the weather would soon turn colder. It would be incredibly difficult to crawl out of a warm bed.
"Alright then, see you tomorrow!"
"Okay, Onizuka Class dismissed!"
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Academy accepts fewer than 800 recruits each year, mainly because there are only four dormitory buildings; three for men and one for women.
The dorm conditions were quite good. Every student had a single room, so they could learn independence and get enough rest for the academy's demanding physical training.
Looking at the key in his hand, Ritsu saw the number 147 engraved on it. It was both his student number and his room number. When he glanced at Morofushi's key, it read 144.
"There are two rooms between us, pretty close."
Seeing that the two rooms in between belonged to Jinpei and Hagiwara, it made sense. Rei was right next door to him, while Date, the class leader, lived on Morofushi's other side.
Ritsu inserted the key and pressed the door handle. As expected, the room was very small.
There was no private shower, and aside from a single bed, the room only contained a desk with a chair and a standing wardrobe. Nothing else.
It practically looked like a prison cell.
Fortunately, there was a small balcony, otherwise it would have felt extremely oppressive.
He placed his 30-inch black suitcase on the floor and took out everything inside. After organizing his belongings, it had taken only about ten minutes.
Once finished, Ritsu sat at the desk and flipped through the student handbook. It mostly contained the same information mentioned during the entrance ceremony.
The only thing that troubled him was the 6 a.m. wake-up time.
His days of sleeping in were officially over.
Still, weekends were rest days, so at least he could catch up on sleep then.
After finishing the handbook, he tossed it aside and leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes to rest. Not even a minute passed before he heard tapping on the wall to his right.
It was Morse code.
'Rei is really bored.' The soundproofing here was terrible, he could have just shouted.
After listening carefully and decoding the message, Ritsu stood up and left his room. At the same time, the door next door opened.
"You decoded it pretty fast," Rei said. "I thought you'd come out after me."
"I didn't want to keep you waiting… Going to see Hiro?"
"Yeah. Might as well check out the academy cafeteria."
"They probably serve high-calorie food to replenish energy quickly. I bet the rice is unlimited."
The two arrived at Morofushi's door. Before they could knock, it opened from the inside.
"I was just about to come look for you guys," Morofushi said. "I barely ate breakfast today, I'm starving."
"Let's go."
Morofushi had originally wanted to invite the other three classmates as well. But remembering the tension between Rei and Jinpei, he decided it was better not to.
If they started arguing in the cafeteria, that would be troublesome.
Kind-hearted Morofushi hoped everyone in their class could get along. No matter where you were, teamwork was extremely important.
The cafeteria at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Academy had a great environment and could accommodate 800 people at once. Instructors and students ate at different times.
After lining up and receiving wooden trays, they looked over the food options. The selection wasn't large, but everything looked tasty.
Ritsu was a good eater who wasn't picky, except when it came to bitter foods. The other two basically ate anything.
As long as it tasted good.
The main dish options were karaage (fried chicken), fried pork fillet, and fried horse mackerel.
All three choices were fried.
Just as expected of a police academy cafeteria, it favored high-fat foods. And as Rei predicted, rice was unlimited.
Ritsu chose karaage as his main dish, piled high with shredded cabbage on the side. For a side dish, he picked simmered Japanese pumpkin, and for soup he took kenchinjiru.
After finding an empty seat, Ritsu carefully split apart his disposable chopsticks. Because of his mild obsessive tendencies, if the chopsticks split unevenly it would bother him so much he might lose his appetite.
He first tasted the karaage.
The outer batter was perfectly crispy and seemed to be seasoned with garlic powder. As he bit into it, juices flowed from the meat inside the fried coating. If he hadn't been careful, the oil might have spilled everywhere.
It was definitely well-made fried chicken.
The shredded cabbage with a special lemon-flavored dressing helped cut through the greasiness and tasted refreshing.
The simmered pumpkin was sweet with a hint of saltiness, soft and dense. It was delicious either by itself or with rice.
Finally, the kenchinjiru was a vegetable soup containing mountain greens, daikon radish, konjac, and tofu. The ingredients had been stir-fried in sesame oil before simmering in water.
Normally it would be seasoned with red miso, but the cafeteria used a light soy sauce instead, giving it a milder flavor that paired well with fried food.
"I didn't expect the cafeteria food to be this good," Morofushi said with a smile while sipping his clam soup. "I feel like we'll miss this taste after we graduate."
"I actually thought it would taste bad," Rei said. "But eating fried food as the main dish every day might be a problem."
He was the type who cared about health. Eating large amounts of fried food daily definitely wasn't good for the body.
"Starting tomorrow we'll be doing heavy physical training," Ritsu said. "Besides morning endurance runs, there's also field training. With that much exercise every day, we'll burn it all off. The balance of meat and vegetables is actually reasonable."
Ritsu quietly focused on his meal. He ate slowly, and if he wasn't careful the other two would finish before him.
Just as he squeezed lemon juice onto his chicken, he sensed someone approaching and looked up.
Three female trainees with short haircuts and police uniforms were standing there.
"Sasajima-kun, can I sit next to you while we eat?"
The three of them were already taking up a table for six people, so there was no reason to refuse.
"Sure."
However, the girls clearly misunderstood Ritsu's simple "sure." They immediately surrounded him halfway and began a lively interrogation of questions.
For example:
"Sasajima-kun, why did you want to become a police officer?"
"You look so handsome in your uniform!"
Or:
"Sasajima-kun, your eyes are blue, they're so pretty! Are you mixed-race?"
And:
"Sasajima-kun, your grades are amazing! Can you help us with academic classes?"
"Oh, and what do you usually do on your days off?"
Ritsu, who was never good at talking with strangers, was completely overwhelmed by the barrage of questions.
He turned to the side with a pleading look for help, only to realize that while he had been thinking about what to do, Morofushi and Rei had already slipped away with their trays.
The only thing he met was a pair of smiling, crescent-shaped eyes.
At some point, everyone sitting around him had become girls.
