The ride back to the penthouse was silent.
Uncomfortably silent.
Lena sat by the window, her arms crossed, watching the city lights blur past as her thoughts raced. Beside her, Aiden remained still, his expression unreadable—but the tension around him was impossible to ignore.
Neither of them spoke.
Not after what had just happened.
Not after what she had said.
You're controlling me.
The words still lingered in the air between them, sharp and unresolved.
When the car finally stopped, Lena didn't wait.
She stepped out immediately and walked ahead, not bothering to check if Aiden was following.
She knew he was.
She could feel it.
Inside the penthouse, the silence returned—but this time, it felt heavier.
Lena dropped her bag onto the couch and turned to face him.
"Are you going to explain now?" she asked.
Aiden closed the door behind him, his movements slow, controlled.
"Explain what?"
Lena let out a short laugh. "Seriously?"
She stepped closer, her frustration rising again.
"You said it was dangerous," she continued. "That I don't understand what I'm involved in. So explain it."
Aiden held her gaze.
For a moment, it looked like he might actually say something.
But then—
"You don't need to know."
That was it.
That was the breaking point.
Lena shook her head, disbelief flashing across her face.
"You know what? That's getting really old."
"It's the truth."
"No," she snapped. "It's your version of the truth. There's a difference."
Aiden's jaw tightened slightly.
"You're pushing this too far."
"And you're not pushing enough!" she shot back. "You expect me to just trust you blindly, to follow your rules, to stay in your world without questioning anything—but you won't even give me basic answers."
Aiden took a step closer.
The air shifted instantly.
"You made a choice," he said quietly. "You agreed to this."
"Yes, I did," Lena replied. "But I didn't agree to be kept in the dark like some kind of puppet."
"You're not a puppet."
"Then stop treating me like one."
Silence.
Heavy.
Charged.
For a moment, it felt like something was about to snap.
Like they were standing on the edge of something irreversible.
Then—
Aiden exhaled slowly.
"You want the truth?" he said.
Lena didn't hesitate. "Yes."
Another pause.
Longer this time.
"People are watching you now," he said finally.
Lena frowned. "Watching me?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because you're connected to me."
"That still doesn't explain anything," she said.
Aiden's gaze darkened slightly.
"There are people who don't like me," he continued. "People who would use anything—or anyone—to get to me."
The words settled heavily.
Slowly.
Lena's chest tightened.
"You're saying…" she started, then stopped.
"That I'm a target," Aiden finished.
"And now I am too?" she asked quietly.
Aiden didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
"That's insane," Lena said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"It's reality."
"You should have told me this before," she added, her frustration returning.
"It wouldn't have changed anything."
"It would have changed everything!" she argued. "I deserved to know the risks."
Aiden's expression hardened.
"You wouldn't have walked away."
Lena froze.
"…What?"
"You needed the money," he said bluntly. "You needed the deal. That wouldn't have changed."
The words hit harder than anything else he had said.
Because they were true.
And he knew it.
Lena swallowed, forcing herself to stay steady.
"That doesn't mean you get to decide what I can handle."
"I'm not deciding," he said. "I'm managing the situation."
"There you go again," she muttered. "Control."
Before he could respond—
Her phone buzzed.
Lena frowned slightly, pulling it out.
Unknown number.
She hesitated for a second before answering.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then—
A voice.
Low.
Distorted.
"You shouldn't have gotten involved with him."
Lena's heart stopped.
"Who is this?" she demanded.
A soft chuckle came through the line.
"Someone who knows better than you."
A chill ran down her spine.
"What do you want?" she asked, her voice tightening.
"Stay away from Aiden Cole," the voice said. "Or you'll regret it."
The call ended.
For a moment, Lena just stood there, staring at her phone.
Frozen.
"Lena."
Aiden's voice snapped her out of it.
She looked up at him slowly.
"Someone just called me," she said.
His expression changed instantly.
"Who?"
"I don't know," she replied. "Blocked number."
"What did they say?"
Lena hesitated.
Then—
"They told me to stay away from you," she said quietly.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop.
Aiden's jaw tightened.
His entire demeanor shifted—no longer just controlled.
Now—
Dangerous.
"I told you," he said.
Lena shook her head, trying to process everything.
"This isn't normal," she said. "This isn't just some fake relationship anymore."
"It never was," Aiden replied.
That realization hit her all over again.
"You dragged me into something real," she said.
"I gave you a choice."
"A choice without full information," she corrected.
Aiden ran a hand through his hair, clearly irritated now.
"I'll handle it."
Lena frowned. "Handle what?"
"This."
"How?" she asked. "By not telling me anything again?"
A pause.
Then—
"No," Aiden said.
That caught her off guard.
"What does that mean?" she asked.
Aiden stepped closer.
Closer than before.
"It means things are changing," he said quietly.
Lena's heart skipped.
"Changing how?"
Aiden looked at her.
Really looked at her.
And for the first time—
There was no distance in his gaze.
No emotional barrier.
No cold detachment.
"From now on," he said, "you don't go anywhere alone."
Lena blinked.
"That's not—"
"You stay where I can protect you."
"That sounds exactly like control," she argued.
"It's protection," he corrected.
"Same thing," she shot back.
Aiden's expression hardened.
"Not in this case."
Silence fell again.
Lena exhaled slowly, her mind racing.
This was real.
Too real.
And suddenly—
A lot more dangerous than she ever imagined.
But what scared her the most?
Wasn't the call.
Wasn't the threat.
It was the fact that, despite everything—
She wasn't walking away.
Because deep down—
She knew.
Getting involved with Aiden Cole…
Might have been the most dangerous mistake of her life.
