Chapter 15 - Fault Line

Rain hit harder now.

Not gentle.

Not atmospheric.

Relentless.

It bounced off the wreckage, off the pavement, off Elric's face as he pushed himself up slow, steady, like he hadn't just been launched across half a street.

"…Okay," he muttered, brushing water from his eyes. "…so we're doing betrayal arcs now."

No one laughed.

Lyra stood ahead of them, unmoving.

Between them...

And the agents.

"…I was assigned to monitor you."

Her voice didn't shake.

Didn't soften.

Just… was.

Pix took a step back. "…That's not a joke, right?"

Mii blinked rapidly, hands clenched near her chest. "Wait... wait, wait... this is like a plot twist, right? You're gonna say 'just kidding' and then we all hug?"

Kaida-9's stance lowered, weight shifting.

Combat-ready.

"…Clarify."

Sera didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Just watched Lyra like she'd been expecting this exact moment.

Elen's hand remained lightly on Elric's sleeve.

Still.

Calm.

Present.

Elric tilted his head slightly.

"…So," he said, casual, like they weren't surrounded by enemies, "you're like… a quest NPC with hidden dialogue?"

Lyra didn't react.

"…No."

A pause.

"…I was sent to observe the anomaly."

Her eyes flicked to him.

"…You."

The agents took another step forward.

Unhurried.

Unstoppable.

Kaida-9's voice dropped.

"…Then you are compromised."

Lyra's jaw tightened.

"…I completed my mission."

Pix frowned. "…That doesn't sound good."

Sera finally spoke.

"…No."

A beat.

"…It doesn't."

Mii shook her head, stepping forward. "No, no, no, no... we fought together! That counts! That's like... bonding event level three at least!"

Lyra's eyes flickered for just a fraction of a second.

Then hardened again.

"…You were variables."

Pix's expression twisted. "…Wow. Okay. Rude."

Kaida-9 stepped forward, placing herself slightly in front of Elric.

"…Threat reassessment complete."

Her fist clenched.

"…You are now a potential hostile."

The rain grew louder.

Or maybe everything else just got quieter.

Elric scratched his cheek.

"…So," he said, "quick question."

Everyone looked at him.

"…Are we fighting each other now, or the weird probability guys? Because I feel like we should prioritize."

Pix pointed immediately. "YES! THANK YOU! PRIORITIES!"

Mii nodded rapidly. "Yes! External threat first! Internal drama later!"

Kaida-9 didn't move. "Internal threats cannot be ignored."

Sera murmured, "…Timing is critical."

Elen said nothing.

But her grip tightened slightly.

Lyra exhaled slowly.

"…They won't stop."

A beat.

"…Even if I step aside."

Elric blinked. "…Wow. That's… inconvenient."

The lead agent stepped forward again.

Closer.

Closer than before.

Its voice slid into their minds...

Colder now.

Sharper.

"Decision window closing."

"Asset retrieval will proceed."

Lyra's eyes flicked to Elric again.

Something there.

Something small.

Cracked.

"…You don't understand what you are," she said quietly.

Elric smiled.

"…Yeah, I've been getting that a lot."

The agent moved.

Fast.

Faster than before.

Closing the distance in an instant...

Kaida-9 intercepted.

Her punch landed...

This time, it connected solidly.

The agent staggered.

Actually staggered.

Sera's voice sharpened.

"…Their control is weakening."

Pix lit up. "YES! BREAK THEM MORE!"

Mii spun, launching into motion. "Team chaos, go!"

Lyra hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then...

She moved.

Not toward the agents.

Toward Elric.

Grabbing his arm...

Pulling him back.

"…Stay behind me."

Silence.

For half a heartbeat.

Pix blinked. "…Wait."

Mii gasped. "WAIT!"

Kaida-9 turned. "…You are choosing sides."

Lyra didn't look at them.

"…I'm choosing the outcome."

The agents adjusted again.

Faster.

Sharper.

But now...

Things were… off.

Things were… off.

A step misaligned.

A movement slightly delayed.

A reaction just a fraction too slow.

Elric noticed.

"…Oh," he said.

"…they're losing."

Sera shook her head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…You're overriding them."

The world shifted.

Again.

Subtle.

But real.

Rain didn't fall quite straight.

Light didn't reflect quite right.

Movement… bent.

Elric stepped forward.

Not slipping.

Not stumbling.

Just… moving.

Naturally.

An agent lunged...

A piece of debris fell...

Perfect timing...

Blocking the path...

Elric sidestepped...

Effortless.

Lyra's eyes widened.

"…You're not reacting."

Kaida-9 growled.

"…He is controlling the field."

Pix screamed. "HE'S LEVELING UP!"

Mii clapped mid-combat. "Player evolution arc!"

Sera whispered, almost to herself.

"…No."

"…This is something else."

Elen finally stepped forward.

Beside Elric.

Voice soft.

Certain.

"…He's becoming part of it."

The lead agent stopped.

Completely.

Watching Elric.

Then...

For the first time...

It stepped back.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Impossible.

Elric blinked.

"…Did I just win a boss fight?"

Pix threw her arms up. "YES! BY DOING NOTHING!"

Mii collapsed dramatically. "BEST. FIGHT. EVER."

Kaida-9 lowered her fists slowly.

"…Outcome: victory."

Lyra exhaled.

Long.

Controlled.

"…Temporary."

The agents began to withdraw.

Not defeated.

Not destroyed.

Just… retreating.

Sera watched them go.

"…They'll come back."

Elen nodded slightly.

"…Stronger."

Elric stretched his arms.

"…Good."

Everyone looked at him.

"…Wouldn't be fun otherwise."

Lyra turned to him fully now.

No masks.

No pretense.

"…You've just escalated this beyond recovery."

Elric grinned.

"…Step five," he said.

"…break the system harder."

Rain fell.

Neon flickered.

And for the first time...

The city felt like it was watching him back.
