Chapter 3 - Zai Stone Appears

Grand Master came forward after a few moments and looking at the 30 participants said "Congratulations on conquering the physical challenges of the first round. However, the journey has just begun. The Daten-shi Island force values not only strength but also mental resilience."

He then went on and explained the second round of the exam.

Elemental Rift Traverse: Second Round

The Elemental Rift is a mysterious, shifting landscape that challenges participants' ability to adapt and cooperate. The Grand Master reveals the second round with a wave of his hand, conjuring an enormous, swirling vortex in the centre of the stadium.

Task: Elemental Synchronization

Fire Element: Participants must find and synchronize with the rhythm of flames flickering within the Elemental Rift.Water Element: Navigating through cascading waterfalls and turbulent streams, participants must attune themselves to the water's natural flow.Earth Element: Amidst shifting landscapes of rocky terrains, participants must connect with the grounding force of the earth beneath their feet.Lightning Element: In a section crackling with electrical energy, participants must harmonize with the rhythm of the lightning arcs.Wind Element: Moving through zones cloaked in Air currents, participants need to align with the ebb and flow of the strong air currents.

The participants started going into the vortex and all of them aligned themselves with the element they exceled in. Zai Stone stood in front of the fire flames, and he brought his hand forward and for a moment closed his eyes and then a flame ignited on his palm which when clashed with the flames of the vortex cleared a walking path for Zai to go through and then he easily walked through and exited the vortex being the first participant to clear the second round.

Hiroko faced the challenge with a distinct approach. Instead of attempting to predict the erratic movements of the air currents or aligning himself with a specific rhythm, he decided to communicate with the wind in a unique way. Hiroko, with an open mind and a keen sense of intuition, extended his arms into the currents, feeling the invisible forces around him. As he did so, a peculiar occurrence unfolded. The wind, seemingly responsive to Hiroko's energy, began to create subtle patterns and shapes around him.

He moved his hands gracefully, shaping the currents around him as if sculpting an ethereal masterpiece. The spectators and fellow participants observed in awe as the wind itself seemed to acknowledge Hiroko's unspoken connection.

The air currents, instead of presenting a chaotic obstacle, became a collaborative partner in Hiroko's journey through the Elemental Rift. They guided him through the section with a gentle and harmonious flow, demonstrating a profound connection between the participant and the elemental forces.

As Hiroko emerged from the Wind Element section, the Grand Master and the onlookers were left intrigued by this unconventional interaction. It was a testament to Hiroko's ability to establish a unique understanding with the elements, transcending the conventional approaches taken by others.

The second round was over now with only 24 participants remaining. The participants standing there now knew that only one more obstacle was there between them and their goals. The tension in the air thickened as the remaining 24 participants contemplated the final obstacle that lay ahead. The Elemental Rift had already tested their elemental prowess and adaptability, but the grandeur of the third round was shrouded in mystery. The Grand Master, with an enigmatic smile, gestured for everyone to gather at the center of the stadium. "The third round is up on you. In this round, each participant shall face a senior zensen of the Daten-shi force. You have a choice, you can either engage them in hand-to-hand combat and win it by defeating your opponent or you can choose to grab the chain attached to their arms and win the round. Make your choice wisely, for it shall define your approach and reveal the depths of your abilities." The grandmaster announced as he gazed up at the participants.

The remaining 24 participants exchanged glances as the Grand Master unveiled the nature of the third and final round. The revelation of facing senior zensen from the Daten-shi force added a new layer of complexity to the competition. Whispers of speculation rippled through the contestants, and a mix of determination and anxiety painted their expressions.

The Grand Master's enigmatic smile hinted at the significance of the upcoming challenge. The choice presented—hand-to-hand combat or seizing a chain—introduced a strategic element that required participants to consider their strengths and approach. The tension in the air was palpable as each participant assessed their capabilities and formulated a plan for the impending confrontation.

The senior zensen, adorned in the distinguished attire of the Daten-shi force, stepped forward, each exuding an aura of experience and skill. The participants could feel the weight of the impending challenge, recognizing that these seasoned warriors would not be easy opponents.

In the third round of the Daten-shi Island force entrance exam, Hiroko found himself facing off against the senior Zensen, a seasoned A-class member named Takeshi Saito. The atmosphere crackled with tension as the two opponents prepared for a hand-to-hand combat that would determine Hiroko's fate in the exam. Hiroko without any thoughts opted for seizing the chain as he entered the ground.

Hiroko, known for his swift movements and the unique Wind Slash move, approached the challenge with a focused yet adaptable mindset. The Zensen, Saito, was a formidable opponent with a reputation for being a master tactician in hand-to-hand combat.

As the fight began, Hiroko immediately relied on his agility, dodging Saito's initial strikes with a series of acrobatic manoeuvres. The Zensen's movements were calculated and precise, and Hiroko knew he needed to think outside the box to gain an advantage.

Hiroko whispering to himself "Wind Slash won't be enough against him. I need to use my surroundings."

Saito closed in, launching a barrage of punches and kicks. Hiroko expertly evaded most of the attacks, but Saito's strikes were lightning-fast, and a few connected, sending Hiroko staggering backward. The crowd watched in suspense as the Zensen pressed his advantage.

Saito smirking "You're quick, but speed alone won't save you."

Hiroko, with a bleeding lip and a determined glint in his eyes, assessed the arena. Spotting a series of hanging chains suspended from a structure above, he saw an opportunity. As Saito lunged for another strike, Hiroko utilized his Wind Slash move, aimed at the arena floor which broke the floor and rocks flew mid-air due to the pressure of the move. Hiroko without wasting any time started to kick all the rocks that flew and directed them towards Saito. As the rocks flew through the air, Hiroko skilfully directed each kick with precision, aiming them strategically at Saito. The crowd watched in awe as the seemingly chaotic barrage of rocks followed a calculated pattern, creating a defensive barrier around Hiroko.

Saito, taken aback by Hiroko's resourcefulness, swiftly maneuverer to evade the incoming rocks. However, Hiroko's relentless assault forced Saito on the defensive, limiting his ability to counterattack.

With each kick, Hiroko infused his movements with the essence of wind, enhancing the speed and unpredictability of the rocks. The arena echoed with the clattering sound of rocks colliding with the ground and the occasional clash as they collided with Saito's defensive manoeuvres.

Despite the intensity of the situation, Hiroko maintained his determined focus. He seized the opportunity to close the distance between them, utilizing the diversion created by the flying rocks. As Saito attempted to deflect the rocks, Hiroko executed a rapid series of acrobatic flips, closing in on the senior Zensen.

In a swift motion, Hiroko unleashed a spinning kick. Recognizing the imminent threat, Saito swiftly attempted to counter, but the barrage of rocks created a momentary opening. As Saito gracefully landed back on the ground, he anticipated Hiroko's next move, expecting another Wind Slash attack.

However, Hiroko's strategy took an unexpected turn. Instead of repeating the familiar Wind Slash, Hiroko closed the distance with remarkable speed, catching Saito off guard. Confusion flickered in Saito's eyes as he wondered why Hiroko opted for a seemingly straightforward attack.

As Hiroko closed in, executing his attack, Saito leaped high to evade the impending strike. In this mid-air moment, Hiroko unveiled his tactical brilliance. Swiftly redirecting his attack to the arena floor, a cascade of rocks leaped into the air. Saito, caught off balance, found himself surrounded by an airborne storm of rocks, momentarily defenceless against Hiroko's strategic prowess.

However, as the first rock was about to make impact, Saito displayed incredible reflexes. With a deft touch, he placed his hand on the top of the incoming rock, using it as a stepping stone to jump even higher. Leaping gracefully from rock to rock, he closed in on Hiroko, a confident smile adorning his face.

"You really are good, Hiroko Tatsuya, but you have reached your limit, and now I will end this," Saito declared with joy, ready to conclude the match. Unfazed, Hiroko responded with a confident smile, "Who said anything about this being my final move?"

Seizing the opportunity, Hiroko leaped onto the largest rock, approximately three feet in height. With precision, he positioned his foot on the rock's top, then exclaimed, "Wind Dash." A whirlwind of air currents enveloped his body as he used the rock as a launching pad, hurtling mid-air towards Saito.

In a flash, both Hiroko and Saito landed simultaneously on the ground, their backs facing each other. Saito, still smiling, commended Hiroko with a simple "Good try, Hiroko Tatsuya." However, to everyone's surprise, Hiroko, who had fallen to his knees, raised his right hand, revealing the captured chain in his palms. With incredible finesse and unforeseen tactics, Hiroko had successfully cleared the round, leaving the spectators in awe of his strategic prowess.

Hiroko, breathing heavily and nursing a few bruises, exchanged a nod of respect with Zensen Saito. The other participants, witnessing Hiroko's unique approach, now prepared for their own challenges in the entrance exam. The journey towards becoming a Zensen continued for other participants but for Hiroko it was now over as he knew he had cleared the third round and passed the exam.

After a while, Shiro also successfully cleared the round, joining Hiroko among the triumphant participants. Out of the initial 24 contenders, 15 emerged victorious, leaving only one individual yet to face the challenge—Zai Stone. In a surprising turn, Zai expressed his desire to engage in hand-to-hand combat, a choice that deviated from the prevalent strategy of seizing the chain.

Zai, the mysterious figure who had maintained an enigmatic presence throughout the exam, entered the arena with an air of silent determination. Mizuki Hayashi, a Zensen known for her arrogance, openly scoffed at the notion of hand-to-hand combat against someone like Zai.

Mizuki Hayashi, smirking, threw a mocking challenge at Zai. "Hand-to-hand combat, boy? Do you believe you can match my skills?" Mizuki added as she prepared for the battle. Zai responded with a stoic silence, his cold gaze unsettling the usually confident Zensen Hayashi. The Grandmaster, observing from a vantage point, felt an intriguing darkness emanating from Zai's being, a hidden intensity that raised questions about the enigmatic participant.

As the clash began, Mizuki unleashed a barrage of strikes, her movements characterized by swiftness and precision. Zai, resembling a shadow, effortlessly evaded each blow with calculated footwork and counters that left onlookers in awe. Frustration crept onto Mizuki's face as she failed to land a single hit on Zai. In a moment of taunting, she remarked, "Is this the extent of your skill? I expected more from someone who dared to challenge me!"

Zai's expression remained unchanged, revealing neither annoyance nor amusement. With a sudden burst of speed, he closed the distance, seamlessly dodging a punch from Mizuki by bending down. In the same fluid motion, Zai launched a counterpunch that connected with Mizuki's jaw, sending her flying. The arena fell silent as Mizuki, bewildered by the sudden turn of events, looked up only to be met by a powerful kick from Zai, crushing her to the arena floor.

The crowd, initially cheering for Mizuki, fell into a stunned silence as Zai, the mysterious contender, asserted dominance over the seasoned Zensen. Mizuki struggled to regain her composure, nursing the pain from Zai's unexpected assault. The Grandmaster, his eyes narrowed with intrigue, watched closely as the enigma that was Zai Stone unfolded before him.

Mizuki rose with a mix of anger and humiliation burning in her eyes, unable to bear the disgrace inflicted by Zai, a seemingly mere boy. "Don't get cocky," she seethed, charging toward Zai in blind rage. However, her attacks were erratic and lacked precision, making it easy for Zai to evade.

Zai, a silent enigma, became a fluid spectacle of martial prowess. As Mizuki's movements grew more desperate, Zai seamlessly weaved through her strikes with the grace of a seasoned martial artist. His footwork mirrored the dance of a seasoned practitioner, effortlessly gliding away from each attack.

In response to Mizuki's chaotic assault, Zai's actions spoke louder than words. He executed a swift sidekick, redirecting Mizuki's momentum and sending her off balance. Capitalizing on her vulnerable state, Zai closed the distance with a lightning-fast series of strikes—a flurry of punches and kicks that showcased both speed and precision.

As Mizuki was sent airborne, Zai exhibited a martial finesse reminiscent of a disciplined fighter. He flawlessly transitioned between strikes, exploiting Mizuki's every opening. The culmination of his attacks was a final roundhouse kick that sent Mizuki crashing to the arena floor with a resonating impact.

Looking down at the defeated Mizuki, Zai uttered a single word, "So weak." The supervisor declared him the winner, and Zai, in a display of nonchalant superiority, walked away. The crowd, still processing the unexpected turn of events, watched in stunned silence.

However, Mizuki, fuelled by a mix of royal pride and sheer rage, stood up with an expression bordering on madness. "How dare you call me weak! I am of royal blood! I won't allow some low blood like you to embarrass me!" she raged, her anger manifesting as she conjured a sphere of water, showcasing her formidable Reiki control.

The two captains standing beside the grandmaster sensed the violation of rules and immediately dashed towards Mizuki to intervene. Unfazed by the chaos, Zai simply bent down, igniting a small flame on his right hand, which he used to effortlessly stop Mizuki's powerful water attack. The captains subdued Mizuki, who, in her surprised state, was unable to comprehend Zai's unexpected display of strength.

Looking down at her with an expression of disdain, Zai added, " I take my words back; you are not weak, you are pathetic." The words echoed through the arena, sealing Mizuki's defeat and solidifying Zai's reputation as an enigmatic force to be reckoned with.

In the wake of the gruelling entrance exam, the grandmaster's voice echoed through the arena, a mix of congratulations and a forewarning of the challenge that awaited the newly anointed Zensen. "Congratulations, warriors. You have earned the title of Zensen," the grandmaster declared, his tone carrying a mixture of pride and anticipation.

A buzz of excitement and nervous energy rippled through the participants as they absorbed the significance of their achievement. Some exchanged glances, their eyes reflecting a mix of triumph and trepidation. The grandmaster, a wise figure in the world of Daten-shi, continued to address the newly minted Zensen, his words carrying the weight of their impending trials.

"But," he added, his voice taking on a more serious note, "your journey is far from over. Within the esteemed ranks of the Zensen, you will now engage in a tournament, a test to determine the best among you. The tournament will be a three-day tournament starting tomorrow, so go and either rest or prepare for the task that lies ahead."

Whispers erupted among the participants, discussing the upcoming tournament. Hiroko, his eyes reflecting determination, turned to Shiro, "Looks like the real challenge is just beginning. What do you think, Shiro?"

Shiro, with a grin, replied, "Bring it on, Hiroko. I will be the best Zensen of this year". Hearing this statement from Shiro, Hiroko also smiled and with joy on his face he added "we will see about that".

The next day, all the participants have gathered and to their surprise the stadium is filled with crowd. People gathered to witness the participants and their battles. The grandmaster announced the first-round battles and thus the tournament commenced.

Emi Nakajima and Hiroko Tatsuya engaged in a seismic showdown. Emi, with her water manipulation abilities, faced Hiroko, known for his swift movements and the unique Wind Slash technique. The clash of water and wind promised an intriguing spectacle. Emi, graceful and composed, began by conjuring intricate water formations that flowed around her like a protective shield. Hiroko, agile and adaptable, observed Emi's elemental display with a calm focus. The audience braced for the collision of these contrasting forces. As the battle commenced, Emi directed streams of water toward Hiroko with precision. The liquid tendrils twisted and turned, aiming to entangle Hiroko and restrict his movements.

However, Hiroko, displaying his acrobatic finesse, expertly navigated through the water currents, leaving the audience in awe of his agility. Hiroko, seizing the moment, initiated his Wind Slash technique. The invisible force swept through the air, creating a whirlwind that disrupted Emi's carefully crafted water defences. Emi, caught off guard, redirected her focus to reforming her water shield, but Hiroko continued his assault with relentless speed. In a surprising twist, Hiroko utilized the wind currents to manipulate Emi's water, creating a mesmerizing clash of elements within the arena. The crowd, captivated by the display of elemental synergy, erupted into cheers as Hiroko seamlessly blended the power of wind with Emi's water manipulation. Emi, recognizing the need for a strategic shift, adapted her tactics. She elevated the water around her to form a towering wave, intending to overwhelm Hiroko with sheer force. Hiroko, unfazed, harnessed the wind to create a protective barrier that deflected the oncoming deluge.

The climax of the battle unfolded as Hiroko, with a calculated move, infused his Wind Slash with an intensified burst of speed. The enhanced technique sliced through the water wave, dispersing it in all directions. Emi, momentarily disoriented, found herself exposed to Hiroko's final move. Hiroko without any hesitation used his Wind Slash attack on Emi as he closed the distance and threw her flying. Emi couldn't stand up and thus Hiroko was declared the winner.

As the first-round battles concluded, the winners advanced with a mix of triumph and determination. The Zensen tournament had only just begun, promising more thrilling clashes and surprises in the quest to determine the best among them.
