Chapter 57 - Embracing the Unexpected: Shattering Comfort Zones and Welcoming New Faces

I woke up the next morning with a different kind of resolve. The weight of the past was still there, but I was determined to face it to fight my way back into the light.

Before heading out for the day, I decided it was time to stop hiding. Walking into the dining place, I forced myself to initiate a brief, natural conversation with my stepmother. We exchanged polite morning greetings, and she asked about my schedule. We kept it simple, just talking about when my classes would end, what time I planned to catch my train, and when I expected to be back home. It wasn't a deep heart-to-heart, but it was a start. It was a conscious step toward breaking the ice, proving to myself that I could coexist with this new reality without running away.

Then I stepped outside. However, the day didn't go as I planned. Because a local festival was underway, the streets were choked with a massive, gridlocked traffic jam. Despite my best efforts to get out early, the delay was inescapable. By the time I finally reached college, I was running late, and the class had already begun.

I felt disappoint at myself. I hated being late, and because of my delay, I couldn't slip into my usual seat with my friends. The classroom was already packed, so I forced myself to take an unfamiliar, isolated bench near the back, far away from anyone I knew. Sitting all by myself in the rear rows felt strange and awkwardly lonely, completely throwing off my routine.

Midway through the lecture, the classroom door creaked open, and Luca came inside. I clearly understood that he was also caught in the exact same festival traffic. He scanned the room and spotted me sitting alone in the back. Not wanting to disturb the ongoing lecture by causing a commotion or trying to weave through the packed middle rows, Luca simply made his way to the back and quietly took a seat next to me. We sat together through the remainder of the lesson.

Because our stream had an exceptionally large number of students, this particular lecture hall was one of the few rooms big enough to hold all of us. As a result, students weren't filing out of the room after the session ended; we were all staying put for the next class scheduled in the same space.

As the brief transition between classes settled, Luca turned to me with a knowing smile.

"Feeling a little lonely back here?" he asked.

I let out a soft sigh, nodding. "Very. I'm so used to sitting in the middle rows. This back bench feels completely disconnected."

"I know a few people over here," Lucas said, pointing toward a cluster of desks closer to the center where three girls were sitting together with open spaces around them. "Do you want to come and join them?"

"Yes, absolutely," I answered without hesitation. This was my chance, a chance to push past my old social anxieties and practice the courage I had promised myself I would build.

Luca walked over to the cluster, asked for permission, and then signaled for me to come over. As I approached, the three girls looked up and welcomed me with bright, warm smiles, instantly melting away a good portion of my initial awkwardness.

Even though I thought I could handle it but as I stood there taking in the new faces, my pulse fluttering with the familiar thrum of social anxiety, my phone buzzed softly in my pocket. Glancing down, I pulled it out to find a new message on the screen.

It was from Luca.

"Don't worry about anything. They're really nice people. I know them well, so you'll blend right in. Don't stress too much and even if you accidentally say something weird or awkward, they aren't the type to gossip about it. They just don't care about that kind of drama. You're safe. Just relax."

At first I wondered. He was sitting beside me then why...Then a thought came to me , he might thought that it would be rude to whisper in front of them. That's why he texted me.

After the realization, a flicker of hesitation crossed my mind. I quickly tapped out a reply under the desk:

"Really? Can I actually trust that?"

Almost immediately, his reply popped back up:

"Yes, obviously."

Reading those words, a quiet wave of reassurance washed over me. The tight knot in my chest loosened just a fraction. I took a deep, steadying breath, slipped my phone back into my pocket, and looked up at the girls with a renewed sense of calm.

Okay, sure then, I told myself, stepping fully into the conversation.

When I started to talk with them, they were so effortlessly kind that the tension dissolved almost immediately. Soon, we were deep into casual conversation, trading stories about our likes, dislikes, and hobbies.

As we talked, I learned fascinating things about them. One of them was a remarkably talented artist whose sketches were genuinely magnificent, carrying a depth that caught my breath. Another was a tech enthusiast, practically a genius when it came to understanding and handling electronics. Even though we were all studying the same course together, our passions and hobbies pulled us in entirely different directions. We laughed about how different our future paths might be, but for right now, sitting together in that classroom, sharing ideas and laughing, it felt like the start of something wonderful.
