Chapter 153 - Chapter 152 - The First Sovereign

Ned POV

Vesryn Noct did not ask to become the first Night.

That matters.

Too many later priests, soldiers, and frightened governors would retell the moment as if she had knelt before me begging elevation. She did not. She sat in the recovery chamber with bandages across her ribs, one ear torn, eyes reflecting too much light, and told me that if I had come to turn her people into another instrument, I should at least be honest enough to call the blade a blade.

Omega stood behind her.

Renn stood beside me.

Order filled the walls with models.

Noct. Varesh. Kelryn. Their biology already carried what the galaxy had exploited: balance structures finer than human, low-light adaptation, auditory range widened by old evolution, predatory motion sense, fast-twitch muscle patterns, strange immune response, and Force sensitivity distributed not as brilliance but as alertness, a body always listening for the next room to betray it.

I did not invent House Nights from nothing.

No creator does.

We steal possibility from what suffering failed to kill.

"Your people can be strengthened," I told Vesryn. "Not erased. Strengthened."

"All conquerors say the old thing will remain."

"Yes."

"You are not helping your case."

"I am respecting your intelligence."

She watched me for a long time.

"And the cost?"

There it was.

The only question that has ever mattered.

The rite was not rebirth. Not the sacred threshold of Asura. Not casual miracle. It was tempering and design, body-route architecture guided by what I had learned from Sith vessel work, my own construction, Order's war medicine, Omega's refusals, and Renn's insistence that names must survive power.

Bone density would rise. Height would increase over months, not hours, so the heart could learn the new roads. Healing factors would accelerate but not make pain meaningless. Eyes would deepen toward night and motion. Ears and balance would refine until falling became something the body negotiated before fear arrived. Muscles would not bulk like crude soldiers; they would coil, hold, release. Reflex pathways would become predatory-fast. Force coupling would be disciplined around guardian response, not Sith dominance. The body would converge toward a black-armored martial form while retaining traces of origin: face, memory, voice, personhood.

"You will become harder to kill," I said.

"That is usually how men sell becoming easier to use."

Omega looked at me.

Good.

Let the wound stay open.

"You may refuse," I said. "So may any after you."

Vesryn laughed once. "And if none accept?"

"Then I find another answer."

"Liar."

"Yes," I said. "But not about this."

She accepted at dawn.

The first transformation took thirty-seven days and nearly killed her twice.

No song will tell that properly. Songs prefer light. The truth was fever, bone pain, black-veined bruising, nanite scaffolds, tissue growth, organ stress, Force tremors, Omega arguing with me over thresholds, Order recalculating at speeds that made the room hum, Renn reading Vesryn the names of her dead when pain tried to make identity smaller than survival.

On the last day, Vesryn stood taller than she had been, lean and terrible, eyes catching the dark before lamps reached it.

The black armor closed around her body not as costume, but as answer.

She looked at her hands.

Then at me.

"Am I still Vesryn?"

The room waited.

"Ask yourself," I said.

She closed her eyes.

When she opened them, the first Sovereign of Nights looked back.

"Yes," she said.

Only then did I breathe.
