The deadliest attacks happen after exhaustion convinces you to relax.
"Return the Interface."
The Helix soldier spoke with Jasper's voice.
The underground train platform screeched violently against the rails as emergency brakes locked the entire transport line in place. Sparks burst across the tunnel walls and survivors crashed into seats and steel supports. Children screamed as weapons clattered across the floor and ahead in the darkness—Rows of white-eyed Helix operatives stood perfectly still across the tracks waiting.
From behind them, something massive scraped slowly through the tunnel shadows as metal grinded against the concrete. Nobody moved for half a second.
Mercer slowly stood from the floor rubbing blood from his lip.
"…I officially miss regular psychopaths."
Kane already had his rifle aimed forward.
"Everybody stay down.
The Helix operatives didn't raise weapons, didn't rush forward or even blink, but simply watched. The train lights flickered violently white overhead.
Then Director Seraph's voice echoed calmly through the tunnel speakers.
"Continued resistance produces unnecessary suffering."
Mercer rolled his eyes aggressively.
"Oh wow, another emotionally dead cult."
No reaction came from the Helix line and that somehow made it worse.
"We need another route."
The scientist shook his head immediately.
"No side exits for at least three hundred meters."
Kane cursed quietly.
"Meaning we're boxed in."
The massive thing behind the Helix soldiers moved closer again and then the tunnel itself vibrated slightly now and every instinct Stacy had screamed the same warning, that it wasn't an arrest. The Helix operative using Jasper's voice stepped forward slowly, its face was hidden beneath pale tactical plating fused into skin, once human, maybe.
"Leadership instability detected after Interface separation."
Its white eyes locked onto Stacy.
"Emotional dependency weakening operational cohesion."
The survivors exchanged nervous glances immediately and Stacy understood the strategy instantly knowing fully well that they wanted division.
"You don't know anything about us."
The operative tilted its head slightly.
"We know enough."
Then:
"You will fracture under prolonged stress exposure."
Mercer raised his shotgun.
"Counterpoint."
BOOM.
The Helix operative's head snapped sideways from the blast—
Yet it remained standing and slowly turning back toward them.
"…Rude," Mercer muttered.
The train power suddenly failed completely and darkness swallowed the tunnel instantly. Only emergency strips glowed faint red along the floor now, there was complete silence. There was no movements from the Helix line, not even sounds from the creature behind them, absolutely nothing and somehow that was worse than battle.
A scream erupted from the rear cars, gunfire exploded instantly after it and chaos detonated through the train.
"They're inside!"
"CONTACT REAR!"
"MOVE MOVE MOVE!"
White flashes burst through darkness as Helix operatives suddenly appeared between train compartments, fast enough to feel impossible. One survivor got dragged screaming into darkness before anyone reached him and another operative dropped silently from the ceiling into the center aisle. Kane opened fire immediately and the operative twisted unnaturally fast through the gunfire.
"These things are insane!"
The train became a nightmare maze of flashing muzzle fire and moving shadows.
Helix operatives attacked surgically.
Every strike targeted panic points.
The scientist realized it first.
"They're destabilizing the group!"
Of course they were, because Helix understood fear better than bullets
"Lights!"
"What?!"
"Kill the emergency strips!"
Mercer blinked.
"You serious?"
"Yes!"
Kane understood immediately.
"They're using the light to track their movement."
The emergency power got shut off instantly and total darkness consumed the train completely and suddenly, Helix advance slowed
"Stay low!"
"In pairs only!"
The survivors began fighting differently now, together and protecting each other instinctively and for the first time since the ambush began, Helix momentum stalled because now the human prediction had become quite harder when the humans stopped acting individually. Then the tunnel behind the Helix soldiers exploded inward as concrete shattered violently and metal bent like paper, the massive thing finally emerged. People froze in horror because it barely fit inside the underground tunnel.
It had black armored flesh fused with exposed mechanical systems and it limbs were massively reinforced with industrial plating and the white Helix symbols pulsing across its body and its face, half human and half machine.
Mercer stared upward slowly.
"…Absolutely not."
The scientist looked horrified beyond words.
"Titan-class…"
The creature's mechanical eye scanned the train slowly and then locked onto the survivors.
"INTERFACE NOT PRESENT."
Its voice shook the tunnel walls as the Helix operatives immediately repositioned faster now and more aggressively. Since Jasper wasn't there, it simply me and that everyone else had become expendable. The Titan slammed one massive arm into the train exterior and the steel exploded inward, the entire compartments ripped open violently and people screamed.
Kane dragged two survivors clear seconds before debris crushed the seats behind them.
"MOVE!"
Helix operatives surged forward through the destroyed compartments with in close-quarters fighting erupted instantly. The train descended in to pure survival chaos. One Helix operative lunged directly toward Stacy. She barely dodged the blade strike and slammed a metal pipe into its jaw. The operative staggered and then adapted immediately.
"You exhibit elevated resilience markers," it observed calmly.
Stacy drove the pipe into its throat repeatedly until it collapsed.
"Shut up." Stacy yelled.
Mercer and Kane fought back-to-back now while survivors evacuated deeper through the train compartments. The Gen-One units engaged Helix forces silently nearby, it was the blue against the while and Old systems against new ones. And for the first time the survivors realized something terrifying that these factions had fought before long ago.
"They continued the war…"
Stacy shoved ammunition into a rifle quickly.
"What war?!"
The scientist looked shattered.
"The war that ended the world."
The Titan suddenly stopped attacking as it's mechanical eye scanned the battlefield rapidly and then it changed tactics. Instead of attacking fighters, It smashed directly into the rail supports beneath the train and the entire tunnel shook violently.
Kane's eyes widened.
"They're collapsing the tunnel!"
As Concrete cracked overhead instantly, the massive support beams groaned and dust flooded the air. Helix wasn't trying to defeat them anymore rather it was burying them alive.
"EVACUATE THE TRAIN!"
Without hesitation they all rushed into the maintenance tunnels beside the rail lines as the train structure began collapsing behind them. The Titan kept smashing support columns relentlessly.
Helix operatives withdrew calmly haven their mission complete.
"They wanted us to run," Kane realized.
The scientist nodded weakly.
"They're herding us."
And none of them knew what waited ahead.
The survivors stumbled deeper into the maintenance tunnels as the underground rail system collapsed behind them in thunderous destruction. Dust swallowed everything and darkness closed around them. And then suddenly ttunnel ahead lit up softly blue. Rows of dormant figures lined the corridor walls silently with undreds of them. Gen-One soldiers all inactive watching and standing at the center of the corridor was Jasper alive but totally different as his eyes flickered fain blue again. His expression was distant and unnaturally calm.
"Stop moving," he said quietly.
The survivors froze instantly because his voice no longer sounded entirely human and then behind him were thousands of Gen-One eyes slowly opened in the darkness.
And Jasper whispered something that froze Stacy's blood cold.
"They found us sooner than expected."
