Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

"On what basis?"

Rebecca shot to her feet, confusion flickering in her eyes.

Anderson scoffed. "Do you even need to ask? I've never seen a more heartless mother."

He paused, gesturing for Cassie to take Liam and Cheryl out.

"No, I don't want to go." Cheryl buried her face into Anderson's shoulders, preventing Cassie from taking her.

"Baby, what's wrong?" He asked, his attention fully on her. "Go with Aunt Cassie to have your wounds checked."

Rebecca scoffed, folding her hands. "Do you think I hurt her?" She asked, pointing to Cheryl.

Anderson didn't respond to her, but the look in his eyes was a little telling.

Rebecca let out a short laugh. "You really think that little of me?"

"Daddy, Mommy didn't hurt me." Cheryl spoke up, her voice soft as she let out a hiccup. Fortunately, her wailing had stopped.

"Uhn?" Anderson was taken aback, his gaze moving back and forth.

"Yes, daddy. Mommy didn't hit Cheryl." Liam spoke up, the look in his eyes bright. "In fact, the look in her gaze was filled with warmth. I like this mommy best."

"Yes, daddy." Cheryl commented. "Don't divorce mommy, okay? Cheryl will be hurt if you do so."

Anderson swallowed. So he was wrong. She didn't hit the kids.

"Go, wait for me in the living room." Carefully, he set Cheryl to the floor, urging them.

The two kids smiled and left the dining room. But before leaving, Cheryl hugged Rebecca for a second before she ran out.

Rebecca's gaze softened as she watched them leave.

"Rebecca..." Anderson called out, and she snapped her head towards him.

"…I was wrong."

The words seemed unfamiliar in his mouth.

"I'm sorry."

Rebecca's left eyebrow shot up. So he is capable of apologizing. He is different from what I remember.

"And the divorce?" She asked, leaning against the wall.

Anderson stilled. The light in his eyes dimmed. As expected... she only wanted to divorce me.

"I'll sign the papers. You don't have to worry, for the six years you spent with me—" he paused, shutting his eyes for mere seconds. When he opened them again, they were detached. "—I'd definitely compensate you."

Rebecca pushed herself off the wall. Her lips curved up dangerously as she took slow steps towards Anderson who stood rooted in his position.

"What are you try—"

She stepped closer—too close.

Before he could react, her finger pressed lightly against his lips.

"Did I tell you I'd agree to this divorce?"

She cocked her head to a side as she gave him a wide smile.

"Y-you..."

"Cheryl, Liam, I'd drop you off at school today. I hope you don't mind."

Rebecca announced once she walked into the living room. The two kids were seated obediently on the couch as they waited.

"No. We don't mind. It's great to have mommy drop us."

They said simultaneously.

Rebecca was in a good mood after she listened to their answer.

"Come on, let's go." She stretched forth her hands, and the two kids placed theirs in hers as they walked out.

As they made their way to the garage, only one thought flashed through Rebecca's mind.

She didn't care what her past life did. Since she was already married and had two kids already, then she would strive to keep her family happy.

No one… not even her past self… would deter her.

Meanwhile, Anderson watched the three of them board the car and drove off. His gaze still lingered on the car even after it had left.

His eyes narrowed. "Becca, what sort of game are you playing now?"

"Mommy, you won't hit Cheryl again, right?"

Rebecca froze in her action. Her focus fell on the two kids who had eyes just like hers, and a subtle pain spread.

Inhaling, she held the little girl's hands and smiled softly. "You don't have to worry, Mommy won't hurt you anymore."

With a hopeful look, Cheryl stuck out her pinky finger. "Promise?"

Rebecca's smile softened and she nodded. She locked fingers with her. "Promise."

Cheryl's eyes sparkled as she clapped excitedly. She turned to Liam who had a blank expression on his face, "brother, mommy won't hurt us anymore."

Liam nodded, patting his sister's hair. He then turned to Rebecca whose eyes were filled with a rare warmth.

"You said it yourself. You won't hurt us anymore. Then..." he paused and imitated Anderson by placing a finger on his chin. "...I'll reluctantly forgive you."

Rebecca chuckled. This boy... he was just like Anderson.

"Thank you, my darlings." She beamed and Liam broke into a smile.

The car fell into silence as Rebecca stared out the window. Her brows were deeply furrowed as she was in deep thoughts.

She closed her eyes, searching her memory. Unfortunately for her, everything was... blank. It was like they never even existed.

"This doesn:t make sense." She mumbled under her breath.

"Mommy," Cheryl shook her slightly, breaking Rebecca out of her thoughts.

"Hmm?"

"Mommy..." the little girl played with her fingers, not daring to meet Rebecca's eyes.

"What is it, sweetie? You know you can tell me anything." Rebecca probed.

"Mommy… can you stay away from Uncle Carl?" Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Cheryl just wants you and daddy to be together…" She hesitated. "…so we can be a real family again."

The driver's heart lurched as his gaze strayed to Rebecca who was silent.

'It was over. Madam would hit the Young Mistress again. The boss would kill me.'

He thought to himself and broke out in a cold sweat. He subtly wiped his forehead while praying that Rebecca didn't harm the kids.

Rebecca, on the other hand, had no idea what was going on in the driver's mind. Instead, her brows were drawn together tightly.

They kept mentioning Carl. But she truly had no idea who he was. She even asked Anderson, but she only got silence from him.

"Baby…" Rebecca's voice softened. "…who is Uncle Carl?"
