Chapter 5 - Twist of Fate

Chapter 5

Ren's vision was shot, everything felt fuzzy and He could barely stay awake, but he felt arms holding him up.

"…I'm sorry I'm late, Ren-sama."

Ren tried to focus. His eyes wouldn't cooperate. And his breathing was all over the place. "…Who…? Who are you…?" His voice cracked.

The hooded figure didn't answer right away.

Instead...

The air changed.

Ren's gut screamed like something bad was about to happen.

Across the street, the other hooded guy the one with no arms a second ago pushed himself up out of the rubble. Concrete slid off his shoulders. Blood dripped from the stumps where his arms used to be. Thick and dark

"…You've got to be kidding me," he muttered, annoyed more than hurt. "That actually hurt, you know."

Then it happened.

Ren's eyes went wide, even through the haze. He forced himself to stay conscious because what he was seeing made no sense.

The blood started moving backwards.

"What…?" Ren whispered. His pupils shook.

Dark energy like living shadows wrapped around the guy's stumps withering and wavering

And then bone grew. Then muscle, skin. All of it, rebuilding in seconds.

Ren's breath caught. "Regeneration…?"

The second hooded figure clicked her tongue. Annoyed. "Tch. You're really making me waste time here."

The attacker flexed his new fingers, slow, like he was enjoying it. "...So you're one of them," he said, cracking his neck.

The figure holding Ren didn't react. Not even a flinch. She just lowered him to the ground, gentle.

"Stay still, Ren-sama," she said softly. "You've done enough."

Ren's hand shot out, weak, trying to grab her sleeve. "W-Wait… don't go…"

"It's okay. I'm merely fulfilling my duty," she smiled.

"…Now I understand." Her voice changed colder and sharper

"But I have two questions to ask you before I kill you."

The attacker barked a laugh. He actually leaned back. "Ooo… kill me? You're talking as if you could."

She smiled again, slow, and started shrugging off her coat. Her hoodie.

"…ohh, but of course I can I don't say things I don't mean."

The fabric slid down her shoulders.

Ren's eyes snapped open.

"…No way…"

It was her.

The same woman. The one he saw with his uncle. That afternoon before uncle Ben died

His brain short-circuited.

"Ehh wait, wait!" Ren yelled, even though his body felt like lead. "What is going on?! I saw you with my uncle after you both had sex…!"

She froze..

Her face went white. Instantly.

"Ehh…?!" She started waving her hands, panicked. "No, no, no, it's not like that, Ren-sama! You're misunderstanding! That's not what happened at all!"

"Then what did I see?!" Ren shot back, still weak but mad.

"I'll explain everything!" she said fast, totally flustered. "Just.... just let me deal with this one first, okay?! Please?!"

"Deal with…?!"

He didn't finish.

Because the attacker was gone. Then he was there behind her.

"Where do you think you're looking…"

"WATCH OUT!" Ren screamed.

But she'd already turned , her eyes met the attacker's mid-air.

GBIM.....

A chilling pressure hit his body instantly Like the air itself turned solid and decided to sit on everything.

"…...!"

The attacker's face changed. He stumbled back, putting distance between them his breathing went uneven as weat was already beading on his face.

"What… what was that just now…?" he muttered. "That pressure… it felt like… death stared back at me…"

"If she wanted to… she could have sliced me in half…"

His pupils shrank.

"…Impossible. There's only one who has that type of death stare other than alpha ranks. But she can't possibly be…"

"…Are you Sylva…?"

Ren's eyes widened. "Sylva…?"

"But that's impossible," the attacker kept going, talking more to himself now. "She's confirmed to be dead by the monarchs "

The woman sighed. She put a hand on her hip.

"I thought I told you," she said, calmly "I would be the one asking the questions here.

She stepped forward.

"Question one. Judging by the colour of your eyes and the output of your energy, you're an Omega, aren't you? Which means the monarchs don't know of Ren's existence."

She tilted her head.

"Because if they did… they would come here themselves"

Her eyes narrowed.

"They wouldn't send someone like you to wipe out a potential threat."

Her voice dropped.

"So tell me… who else knows?"

The attacker said nothing. But his eyes? They gave him away.

She smiled mischievously hahahaha

"…Now I understand."

She tapped her chin.

"So he wasn't just being careful enough, was he?" she said, almost casual. "After I literally told him to not do anything…"

The attacker went pale.

"…So all of this…" she went on, her smile turning mischievous, "...was based on a hunch?"

Silence.

That was answer enough.

"I see." She straightened. "Then there's no need for me to ask you the second question."

"I can't take any chances. If you can find him because of the tear…

She took one step.

And then she was in front of him " then it's only a matter of time before the higher ranks do."

His eyes went wide with pure shock.

"Impossible… she's…"

Too late.

Her fist drove straight into his chest.

BOOM.

His heart exploded out of his back with one hit

"GHH....!"

Before the body could even drop, nine long blades cloaked in dark energy burst out behind her.

One motion.

Slash.

Slash.

Slash

Cutting him down into twenty pieces including his brain which was cut clean in half.

Blood went everywhere.

Ren's eyes were huge. His voice was barely a whisper.

"…Huh…?"

The woman sighed. Stretched her arms like she just finished a workout.

"Man… I really needed that," she muttered. "It's been a while since I got to move like that Ben was always worried I will destroy this city with my speed

This is a pain I can't even use my full speed

She turned around.

And froze.

Because Ren was staring at her with pure shock.

Her face went pale again.

"…Ehh…" she mumbled. "I… I literally overdid it, didn't I…?"

She scratched her cheek awkwardly

"…That was too much, wasn't it?"

She walked toward him slowly. Ren actually flinched back.

I mean, who wouldn't?

She saw it and smiled briefly

"I see… your uncle had that same reaction when he first saw me in action."

Ren's eyes blew wide. "Uncle Ben…? What are you talking about? What are you? Who are you?!"

She blinked. Then her face lit up.

"Ooo, seriously, my bad!" she said, laughing a little. "I completely forgot to introduce myself."

She put a hand on her chest, proud.

"I'm Sylva."

"…Sylva…" Ren repeated, weak.

His vision started to go.

"Ehh, Ren-sama?" she said fast, stepping forward.

But his body gave out as he collapsed

She caught him before he hit the ground.

"…You did well, Ren-sama," she whispered, smiling gently.

She looked around at the street. It was wrecked. Craters, blood and chunks of concrete everywhere.

"Ehh… I created a sound barrier across the entire street," she muttered. "So no one could hear anything…"

Should I really have stepped in way more earlier I just wanted to see how far he would go?

She paused.

"…But still…"

Her eyes scanned the damage.

"…Look at this place. It's completely ruined…"

She sighed.

Then shifted Ren in her arms.

"…Let's go home."

And with that, she jumped straight into the sky. Gone into the night.
