"The cameras," I said suddenly, turning toward Matteo as he entered the hallway.
He frowned slightly. "What about them?" he asked.
I looked at him, trying to keep my voice steady even though everything inside me was already on edge. "We need to check them," I said. "I want to see everything that happened here."
His expression changed at once, and that alone told me I was not going to like his answer. He shook his head slowly. "They are down," he said. "They are destroyed. Whoever came made sure of it."
For a second, I just stared at him, like I had not heard him properly. Then the meaning settled, and anger rose fast. "Destroyed?" I repeated, my voice rising without me trying to control it.
"Yes," he said carefully, like he was choosing his words. "I have checked the main system. It is gone. The wires were cut, and the system was damaged beyond use."
