Chapter 36 - Shot

The apartment felt too quiet after Percy left.

Jay stood by the window for a moment, watching the empty street below. Her chest felt tight, but she shook it off.

"He's fine," she whispered to herself.

She grabbed her bag and headed downstairs. Instead of waiting for Keifer, she booked a cab.

As she sat inside, she pulled out her phone and typed:

Jay:Don't come. I'll be a little late. Percy just left for New York.

Across town, at the mansion, Keifer's phone buzzed.

He smiled slightly when he saw her name.

Keifer:Mrs. Watson going alone? That's dangerous.

She rolled her eyes at the message.

Jay:Stop calling me that.

Keifer:I'll call you that in front of the world one day.

Her cheeks warmed.

Jay:Focus on work.

Keifer:I am. You're my focus.

She was about to reply—

When suddenly the cab slowed.

Jay frowned. "Why are we stopping?"

No answer.

Two unfamiliar men approached the car.

Her heart dropped.

"This isn't the office route—"

The door opened.

And before she could react, someone covered her mouth.

Her phone slipped from her hand.

The screen stayed on.

Last message visible: Focus on work.

Back at the mansion, Keifer stared at his phone.

No reply.

Five minutes passed.

Ten.

Something felt wrong.

He called.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

His jaw tightened.

He quickly opened the tracking system he had once secretly installed for emergencies — just in case.

Her location wasn't moving.

Abandoned industrial area.

His expression changed instantly.

Then—

His phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Unknown:Looking for someone?

His heartbeat turned cold.

Another message.

A picture.

Jay.

Tied to a chair.

Unconscious.

Keifer's world went silent.

Unknown:You have only one precious thing. Sir said we take it away from you.

His hand trembled — not in fear.

In rage.

He didn't reply.

He grabbed his keys and left.

The warehouse was dark.

Silent.

Keifer stepped inside slowly.

Footsteps echoed.

Jay was there.

Tied.

Weakly conscious now.

Her eyes widened when she saw him.

He moved toward her—

But men stepped out from the shadows.

His father.

Kaizer Watson.

Clapping slowly.

"I told you," his father said coldly. "Attachments make you weak."

Keifer's jaw tightened. "Let her go."

His father smirked. "You chose her over this empire."

"I choose her over everything."

The words echoed.

That made his father's expression darken.

"Take care of him."

Men rushed forward.

Keifer didn't hesitate.

He fought back — sharp, fast, controlled. Punches landing hard. Bodies hitting the floor.

Jay watched with tears filling her eyes.

"Keifer stop—"

"I told you," he said without turning back, "stay behind me."

He untied her quickly and pushed her gently behind him.

His father stepped back toward the exit.

"This isn't over," he said before disappearing.

Only one man remained.

Breathing heavily.

He lifted a gun.

"You think you won?" the man spat. "Sir said — take the precious thing."

He aimed toward Jay.

Everything slowed.

Jay froze.

Before she could even scream—

Keifer stepped in front of her.

The sound echoed in the empty warehouse.

He jerked slightly.

Jay's scream tore through the air.

The man tried to run.

But even injured, Keifer punched him down with one final strike.

Then—

He collapsed to his knees.

Jay caught him.

"No no no no… Keifer—"

He grabbed her hand weakly.

"Hey…"

Her tears were falling uncontrollably.

"Don't talk. Please don't talk."

He forced a faint smile.

"Take care of yourself…"

She shook her head violently.

"And… my brothers…"

"Stop it!" she cried. "You're not leaving me!"

His fingers tightened around hers.

"I'm not… going anywhere."

But his voice was fading.

She grabbed her phone with trembling hands and called the ambulance.

"Please come fast! Please!"

She pressed her forehead against his.

"Stay with me. Look at me. Don't close your eyes."

Sirens.

Lights.

Hands pulling him away.

She refused to let go until they forced her gently.

Hospital.

White walls.

Cold air.

ICU doors closed.

Jay stood outside, shaking.

Her hands still had his blood on them.

She didn't even realize.

Doctors rushed in.

Machines beeped inside.

Time passed.

Minutes felt like hours.

She sank into the chair outside the ICU.

Whispering over and over—

"You promised."

Her phone buzzed.

Percy.

She couldn't even answer.

Her entire world was behind that door.

And for the first time…

Jay felt truly terrified.
