Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 4

The desert received them like a sentence.

The heat was immediate. The air, heavy. The ground… unstable.

Antony moved first.

The sand gave slightly beneath his weight.

Arlo walked beside him, firm, as if the terrain had no effect on him. Ainara scanned the horizon. Vahram studied the space. Osiris and Yaotl remained silent.

No one spoke.

There was no need.

The environment spoke for them.

In the distance…

colossal structures.

Statues.

Antony narrowed his eyes.

"They're not there for decoration."

"No," Yaotl replied. "They're there to measure us."

A sound rose beneath the sand.

Arlo stopped.

"It's moving."

The ground trembled.

Ainara reacted first.

"Back!"

The sand split open.

A vortex erupted violently, spinning on itself and advancing with direction.

It wasn't natural.

It was an attack.

Vahram stepped forward.

"Don't face it head-on. Read its pattern."

The vortex shifted direction.

It targeted the closest.

Antony.

He moved sideways.

The vortex corrected.

Faster.

"It's not chasing," Antony said. "It anticipates."

"Then break the anticipation," Ainara answered.

Arlo charged straight into it.

No hesitation.

The vortex hit him.

The sand struck like stone.

But Arlo did not step back.

He planted his feet.

Held.

"Now," he growled.

Antony understood.

He moved toward the core.

Ainara flanked.

Vahram waited for the exact moment.

Yaotl raised a hand.

Osiris stepped forward.

The vortex destabilized.

A second.

Enough.

"Now!" Antony ordered.

Vahram struck.

Ainara cut.

Antony pierced through.

The core collapsed.

The vortex dissipated.

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

Arlo shook the sand off.

"That wasn't an enemy."

"It was a filter," Yaotl said.

Antony looked ahead.

The statues…

were closer now.

Much closer.

And this time…

they were watching.

All of them.

Ainara spun her sword.

"Now it begins."

The statues started moving.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coordinated.

"Formation," Antony ordered.

And all of them responded.

Without question.

Because they were no longer strangers.

They were something more.

And the desert…

had just recognized them.
