Chapter 29 - 29. The Gathering Storm

Chapter 29: The Gathering Storm – 1939

On September 1, 1939, German tanks crossed the Polish border. Adrian was in his study, reading reports from his intelligence network. When the news came, he closed his eyes and took a long breath.

He had known this day would come. He had prepared for it for twenty years. But knowing did not make it easier.

His mother, Queen Wilhelmina, now in her sixties, found him standing by the window. "Adrian, what will we do?"

He turned to her, his face calm. "We will do what my grandfather did. We will be neutral. We will sell to both sides. We will accept refugees. And we will wait."

"And if the war comes here?"

"It will not," Adrian said. "I have made sure of it."

The next morning, he addressed the parliament. The chamber was packed, the tension palpable.

"My father built this kingdom on neutrality. My grandfather defended it. I will not surrender it to the madness of Europe. Zeelandia will trade with all nations, but we will fight for none. Our borders are closed to armies, open to refugees. Our resources are ours to sell, not to be taken."

He paused, looking at the faces of the men and women who governed his nation. "We will be the ark in the storm. Let the world burn if it must. We will build something better in the ashes."

The declaration of neutrality was published the next day. Within a week, both Britain and Germany had recognized it. The war had come to the rest of the world, but Zeelandia would remain—for now—an island of peace.

Adrian returned to the palace that evening, exhausted but satisfied. He found Professor Bergman waiting in the library, a bottle of wine on the table.

"You have done what you could," Bergman said. "Now we wait."

Adrian poured two glasses. "We do not wait, Professor. We prepare. This war will not end quickly. When it is over, the world will be changed. We must be ready to lead."

He raised his glass. "To the future."

Bergman raised his own. "To the future."

Outside, the lights of Koningstad flickered in the darkness. The kingdom that Cornelius Van der Berg had bought for a handful of guilders was now a beacon in a world descending into chaos. And in the palace, a king who remembered the future began his long vigil.
