Chapter 7 - Awakening the AI

Kael sat in his village room, the eye lenses fully active. The AI had become his constant companion, translating fragments of conversation and analyzing Ki demonstrations.

"Language matrix at sixty-eight percent," the AI reported. "Conversational capability approaching functional levels."

Kael practiced phrases aloud. Villagers passing by paused, surprised at the improvement.

Elder Torin visited and tested Kael with questions about his origins. Kael described the "deep home" and "long sleep" in halting terms. The elder's expression grew thoughtful but revealed nothing new.

During afternoon training observation, Kael attempted to mimic basic stances. His body lacked the conditioning, but the AI provided real-time posture corrections via the lenses.

A faint Ki flow responded. Not enough for any effect, but proof of potential.

Garrick approached again, this time with less hostility. The rival trainee seemed intrigued by Kael's quick learning despite physical weakness.

They exchanged simple words. Garrick demonstrated a basic energy push. Kael tried and managed a tiny ripple in the air.

Small progress, but meaningful.

Evening brought another bunker concern. Kael slipped away briefly with permission, using the excuse of gathering herbs the AI identified as useful.

The short trip allowed a quick diagnostic. Power had dropped further. Capsules still held, but warnings intensified.

Back in the village, Kael deepened his interaction with the AI. He asked it to simulate training scenarios based on observed techniques combined with old Earth martial knowledge.

The lenses projected private overlays during practice. Kael moved through forms in the dark, guided by the neutral voice.

"Adjust angle by seven degrees. Breathe from the lower abdomen."

Fatigue set in, but satisfaction followed. The AI was no longer just a tool. It had become a teacher and confidant.

Kael reflected on his isolation. The AI filled part of the void left by his parents.

"AI, do you have a name?"

"Designation is sufficient. However, you may assign one if desired."

Kael thought for a moment. "Echo. Because you echo the old world while helping me build the new."

"Designation accepted."

The awakening of the AI partnership marked a turning point. Technology and the new world's energy began to converge in Kael's small hands.

He slept better that night, plans forming for future equipment and deeper integration.

The bunker waited. His parents waited. But now he had an ally that never slept and analyzed without emotion.

Progress continued, one careful step at a time.
