Chapter 28: The Black Moon Rose

I laid Azazel flat on the heavy anvil, the frictionless black blade humming softly against the cold iron. In his dormant state, he was a mass of shifting, liquid-metal Soul-Steel, pulsing with a faint sapphire light that matched my own heartbeat.

"You said you were going to build a frame for him," Aria said, walking over and leaning against the workbench. She wiped a smudge of grease from her goggles, her silver eyes scanning the holographic blueprints I had projected. "How exactly do you build a mecha frame for a scythe?"

"You don't," I grinned, pulling a fresh stock of hyper-dense, black and crimson Soul-Steel from the racks. "If I build a body for him to inhabit, I lose my primary weapon. I need him fighting with me, not next to me. We aren't giving him a body, Aria. We're giving him a trigger."

I didn't want to change Azazel's blade—the frictionless edge was already a masterpiece—but the shaft was just a lever. I ignited my Imagination Manifestation, my hands erupting in sapphire sparks. I "reached" into the scythe's handle, hollowing out the primary spine with microscopic precision and machining a high-tolerance, heavy-caliber magnetic acceleration barrel directly into the Soul-Steel handle.

"I'm calling this form the Black Moon Rose," I explained, my mind racing through the ballistics. "It's a perfect fusion of his original Death Scythe lethality and the high-impact logic of a Crimson Rose. I can fire hyper-compressed beam rounds from the back of the scythe head. The recoil alone will give my swings a level of kinetic force I couldn't reach on my own. It's the perfect foundation for a new style of combat."

Aria's eyes widened as she calculated the torque. "A recoil-assisted execution weapon... the Black Moon Rose. You're going to have to be careful, Nero. That much kickback could dislocate a shoulder if you aren't ready for it."

"That's why we practice," I said, moving to the core matrices.

For his base form—the Storm Raven—I integrated twin, miniaturized GM-Particle blasters into the leading edge of his wings and slotted micro-accelerators into his talons. He was now an aerial gunship capable of raining down rapid-fire cover support.

Finally, I built his second stored mode. By engineering a complex set of folding, interlocking joints along the shaft, the weapon could completely collapse. The blade folded back to act as a stabilizing stock, while the internal barrel extended outward, transforming the weapon into a massive, dedicated heavy-frame sniper rifle.

"And when he needs to reach out and touch someone from a mile away?" I asked, snapping the locking pins into place. "We call this The Black Moon's Breath."

I stepped back as Azazel's core flashed, fully absorbing the new weaponized matrices. To test it, he shifted into his raven form, let out a sharp metallic caw, and vaporized a scrap iron target with two precise sapphire beam bolts.

"He's perfect," I said, holding out my arm. Azazel swooped down, his frame clicking and whirring mid-air as he reconfigured into the heavy, black-and-crimson Black Moon Rose gun-scythe.

"Well," Aria said, brushing her hands off. "The Soul-Frames are officially fully upgraded. But as a Technician, I'm already seeing a problem. Monitoring the Archangel's spatial domains, the Ablative Gel, and the rest of the Pack... it's too much for one person."

"I agree," I said, pulling a fresh, perfectly pure core of Aetheric Crystal onto the anvil. "I have my co-pilot. You need yours."

I shaped a highly elastic spherical frame, infusing the Soul-Steel with pure silver for a flawless, pearlescent white finish. Aria stepped up, her hands glowing with silver light as she wove complex alchemical synthesis formulas and spatial regulation codes into the sphere's artificial soul.

She pushed a miniature GM Drive into the slot, sealing the pearl-white frame.

"Activate," she whispered.

The sphere lifted off the table, its violet optical sensors glowing with a calm, analytical light.

"Initialization complete," the pearl Organoid spoke in a smooth, measured voice. "Aria Veil recognized as Primary Technician. Spatial domains stable. How may I assist you, Lady Aria?"

Navigator instantly bounced over, spinning excitedly. "New unit! Hello! Hello! Friends!"

The pearl H.A.R.O. rotated slightly. "Greetings, Navigator unit. Your rotational trajectory is inefficient. Please adjust by two degrees to avoid unnecessary air turbulence."

I burst out laughing. It was perfect. We had the fortress, the arsenal, the sniper, and the ship.
