Chapter 3 - 2

Dream Thief – Part 2

The coin kept spinning.

Arin didn't look back.

"Arin," Mira called, her tone sharper this time. "The mission is done. You can stop now."

Still, he walked toward the window.

Outside, the city stretched endlessly—cars moving in perfect lines, people walking in perfect rhythm.

Too perfect.

He narrowed his eyes.

"…Mira," he said quietly, "how long was I under?"

She frowned. "Standard duration. Fifteen minutes. Why?"

Arin didn't answer.

Instead, he suddenly turned and grabbed the edge of the table.

The coin.

Still spinning.

Not slowing.

Not wobbling.

Just… spinning.

A silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Unnatural.

"That's not possible," Mira muttered.

Arin exhaled slowly.

"So we didn't wake up."

The words hung in the air like a verdict.

Before Mira could respond, the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

Everything froze.

The hum of the machines stopped. The air felt… still.

And the city outside the window—

Stopped moving.

Cars halted mid-motion. People froze mid-step.

Like a paused world.

"…We're still inside," Arin said.

But this time—

It wasn't just a dream.

It was something deeper.

Something broken.

A soft sound echoed behind them.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Arin turned.

And felt his chest tighten.

She was back.

"You chose to leave," she said softly.

"But you never truly escaped."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Mira stepped forward. "Arin, don't engage! This is your subconscious reacting—"

"She's not wrong," Arin interrupted quietly.

Mira froze.

"What?"

Arin looked at the figure.

At the face he couldn't forget.

"I didn't let go," he admitted.

"I just… ran away."

The figure smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

The ground trembled.

Cracks spread across the floor like veins.

Reality itself was collapsing.

"Arin, we need to wake up NOW!" Mira shouted.

"I'm trying!"

But something was wrong.

The exit signal wasn't responding.

The system wasn't pulling them out.

"We're trapped," Mira whispered.

The figure stepped closer.

With each step, the world darkened.

"You went too deep this time," she said.

"There's no clear boundary anymore."

Arin clenched his fists.

"No… there has to be a way."

"There is," she said.

He looked up.

Hope flickered.

"Stay."

Silence.

"If you stay," she continued, "this world stabilizes. No pain. No loss."

Her voice softened.

"Just peace."

Arin's breathing slowed.

His thoughts blurred.

For a moment—

It sounded… tempting.

"Arin!"

Mira's voice cut through sharply.

"Don't listen to her! That's not peace—that's a prison!"

He closed his eyes.

His mind was splitting.

One part of him—

Wanted to rest.

To stop fighting.

To stay in a world where nothing hurt anymore.

The other part—

Refused.

Slowly, he opened his eyes again.

Clear.

Focused.

"You're right," he said quietly.

The figure's smile widened.

But then—

"This isn't real."

The smile froze.

"You're just a memory," Arin continued.

"A part of me that I couldn't let go."

His voice trembled slightly—

But didn't break.

"I was afraid to face the truth."

"That you're gone."

The world shook violently.

The sky above cracked like glass.

"But staying here…" he said,

"…means I lose myself too."

The figure's expression changed.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Just…

Silence.

"Then prove it," she said.

Suddenly—

The world collapsed.

Arin fell.

Endlessly.

Through layers of broken dreams.

Fragments of memories flashing past him—

Voices.

Faces.

Moments.

Regret.

Then—

Darkness.

A single platform remained.

Floating in nothingness.

Arin landed hard.

Breathing heavily.

Mira appeared beside him moments later.

"What… is this place?"

Arin looked around.

"…The deepest layer."

"This is where the mind rebuilds itself," he said slowly.

"Or breaks completely."

A figure appeared in front of them.

Not her this time.

Not a memory.

Something else.

A distorted version of Arin himself.

"You've gone far enough," it said.

Its voice was hollow.

Empty.

"This is your core."

"Your truth."

Mira stepped back. "Arin… what is that?"

He stared at it.

Realization dawning.

"…It's me."

The figure tilted its head.

"You tried to escape your past."

"You tried to bury your pain."

"But it never left."

The ground beneath them cracked again.

"If you want to leave…"

The figure stepped forward.

"…you have to face everything."

Arin's fists tightened.

This wasn't about the mission anymore.

This wasn't about the dream.

This—

Was about him.

He took a step forward.

"Then let's finish this."

The world trembled.

And the final confrontation began.
