Chapter 30 - Chapter 29: The One Who Waits

The air in the chamber shifted the moment he stepped in.

Not violently.

Not like before.

This was quieter… heavier.

Like the space itself was holding its breath.

Amara felt it instantly—that same pull from earlier, faint but undeniable, tightening somewhere deep in her chest. It wasn't trying to tear through her this time.

It was… listening.

Waiting.

The stranger's gaze didn't leave her. You felt it, didn't you? he said, voice calm, almost gentle. The other side.

Amara didn't answer.

Her silence was enough.

The young man moved in front of her again, his stance protective despite the fatigue written all over him. You're not getting near her.

The stranger smiled faintly. "Still playing guard.

And you're still talking too much, he shot back.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then

The stranger took another step forward.

The temperature in the room dropped.

Not cold enough to freeze.

Just enough to feel wrong.

You misunderstand me, he said. "I'm not here to take her.

Then leave, the other man said flatly.

A soft chuckle escaped him. If I leave now, everything we've been building falls apart.

Amara's brow furrowed. We?

His eyes flicked back to her. "You really think this started with you?"

Her stomach tightened.

I don't know what you're talking about.

No," he said quietly. "You don't.

The young man shifted slightly, lowering his voice just enough for Amara to hear. "Don't listen to him. He twists things.

I don't need to twist the truth, the stranger replied smoothly. It's already complicated enough.

His gaze returned to Amara, sharper now.

Tell me, he continued, when you opened it… what did you see?"

Amara hesitated.

Images flashed in her mind—fire, voices, the woman who looked at her like she already knew everything.

Someone, she said slowly.

The stranger's expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Of course you did

The tension in the room thickened.

The other man stepped forward slightly. That's enough.

But the stranger didn't even look at him.

Did she speak to you? he asked Amara.

Amara's fingers curled slightly at her sides.

She said I'm a key.

A faint exhale left him, almost like relief.

Good, he murmured. That means it's still intact.

Still intact? the young man repeated sharply. What are you talking about?

Now the stranger looked at him.

Do you really not know?" he asked.

Something in his tone made the silence stretch.

Then

He said it.

She didn't just leave a message.

Amara's chest tightened.

She left a lock.

The words settled like something heavy dropping into place.

Amara shook her head slightly. "I don't understand

You're not supposed to," he said. "Not yet.

Then explain it, she snapped.

He studied her for a moment.

Then tilted his head slightly.

You felt something watching you, didn't you?

Her breath caught.

Yes.

That wasn't just what's behind the door," he said softly.

A pause.

Then

That was what's sealed by it.

The chamber went still.

The young man's expression darkened. You're lying.

No, the stranger replied calmly. "I'm simplifying.

He looked back at Amara.

Your bloodline didn't just create a way through, he said. It created a barrier.

Her pulse quickened.

A barrier to what?

He smiled slightly.

Something that should have crossed a long time ago.

The air shifted again.

Subtle.

But real.

Amara felt it in her chest.

That pull—

It wasn't just reaching out anymore.

It was pressing back.

I don't want anything to do with that," she said, her voice unsteady.

That was never an option," he repli

The young man stepped forward again, more forceful this time. Enough. Whatever you're planning, it ends here.

The stranger's gaze flicked to him briefly.

You still think this is about control," he said.

It is.

No,he said softly. It's about timing.

Before anyone could react

He moved.

Faster than before.

The young man lunged to intercept him, but this time

He wasn't aiming for Amara.

His hand struck the ground.

Hard.

The symbols across the chamber flared violently, their faint glow snapping back to life in an instant. The air warped again—but differently this time.

Not unstable.

Focused.

Directed.

Amara gasped.

What did you do?!

The other man's expression shifted immediately. He's not opening it

No,the young man realized.

He's waking it.

The ground beneath them pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then

Something answered.

A low, distant sound filled the chamber.

Deep.

Ancient.

Not a voice.

Not exactly.

But close enough to feel like one.

Amara's knees weakened as the pressure returned—not chaotic like before, but heavy, deliberate.

Aware.

It's here, she whispered.

The stranger straightened slowly, his expression calm despite the growing intensity.

Not fully, he said. "But closer than it's been in years.

The young man grabbed Amara's arm. "We need to shut this down—now.

I don't know how!" she said, panic rising again.

Yes, you do,"the other man said quickly. You did it once—do it again!"

The pressure increased.

The light around the symbols darkened at the edges again, the same distortion from before creeping back into the air.

But this time

It wasn't out of control.

It was responding to him.

Amara looked at the stranger, fear mixing with something else.

Why are you doing this?

He met her gaze.

And for the first time

There was no mockery in his expression.

Only purpose.

Because, he said quietly, "it's already begun.

A pause.

Then

And you're the only one who can finish it."

The pull surged.

Stronger than before.

Not tearing

Calling.

Amara's breath shook.

Her heart pounded.

Her mind screamed at her to run, to stop, to shut it down again

But something deeper

Something older

Whispered something else.

Listen.

Her fingers trembled.

The light flickered.

And for a split second

She didn't push it away.

The chamber shook.

Amara!" the young man shouted.

Her eyes widened as she felt it

That presence

Closer.

Clearer.

And this time

It recognized her.
