Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Price of a Void

The darkness of the Abyssal Mines didn't just hide the light; it swallowed hope.

Zael coughed, the thick, metallic dust of the soul-ore burning his lungs. His hands were raw, covered in scars that told the story of ten years in the pits. At nineteen, he looked like a man of forty, his body broken by the very empire that should have protected him.

`Move it, Void-Trash!" a heavy boot slammed into Zael's ribs, sending him sprawling into the sharp rocks.

The speaker was Korg, a guard with a Bronze-Rank Soul. To a normal warrior, Korg was nothing, but in these mines, his slight spiritual pressure was enough to make the slaves tremble. He held a whip glowing with a faint orange light—a weapon that struck the spirit rather than the flesh.

Zael didn't cry out. He had learned long ago that silence was the only dignity he had left. He slowly stood up, wiping blood from his lip, his grey eyes—dull and lifeless—staring at the ground.

`The quota is ten crystals by sunset, Zael," Korg sneered, leaning close. "If you fail again, the Overseer won't just whip you. He'll trade your remaining life-force to the soul-furnace to power the city's lights. Even a Void Soul is worth a few hours of electricity.`

Korg laughed and walked away, the sound echoing through the damp tunnel.

Zael picked up his rusted pickaxe. His stomach growled with a hunger that had become a constant companion. He looked at the wall of rock, but his vision blurred. He was dying. He knew it. His "Void Soul" was like a leaking bucket; it couldn't hold any spiritual energy, leaving his body weak and brittle.

Is this it? he thought, his grip on the tool slipping. Born for nothing, living for nothing, and dying to power a lamp in a nobleman's hallway?

Suddenly, a sharp pain exploded in his skull. It wasn't the whip. It was deeper.

[Ding! Resonance Detected.]

[Condition Met: Absolute Despair + Near-Death State.]

[Initializing the Zenith Marketplace...]

Zael collapsed, his forehead resting against the cold ore. A series of translucent blue screens began to flicker before his eyes, symbols and numbers dancing in the air.

[Host: Zael]

[Soul Rank: Void (Level 0)]

[Lifespan: 42 Days, 11 Hours, 4 Minutes.]

[Currency: 0 Zenith Credits.]

`What... is this?" Zael whispered, his voice cracking. He reached out to touch the screens, but his hand passed through them. They weren't in the tunnel; they were in his mind.

[System Notice: The Market is now open.]

[First-Time User Bonus: 'The Merchant's Eye' (Passive) has been activated.]

Suddenly, the world changed. The dark tunnel was no longer just rock and shadow. Zael looked at the soul-ore in the wall. Instead of just seeing a rock, a small tag appeared over it:

[Low-Grade Soul Crystal: Market Value - 5 Credits.]

He turned his head toward the receding figure of Korg. A glowing panel appeared over the guard's head:

[Target: Korg (Bronze Rank)]

[Soul Value: 1,200 Credits.]

[Tradeable Assets: 'Basic Whip Mastery' (Value: 150 Credits), 'Enhanced Stamina' (Value: 300 Credits).]

Zael's heart hammered against his ribs. He could see their value. He could see their skills.

[Ding! Emergency Quest Triggered.]

[Quest: The First Trade.]

[Objective: Acquire 100 Zenith Credits before your lifespan reaches 40 days.]

[Reward: Lifespan Extension (30 Days) + Basic Soul-Refining Technique.]

Zael looked at his hands. They were still shaking, but for the first time in ten years, his eyes weren't dull. A spark of cold, calculating fire ignited in his pupils.

`A merchant," Zael whispered, a thin smile touching his lips. "I can work with this.`

He turned back to the wall. He didn't just swing his pickaxe blindly. Using his new 'Eye', he could see the faint glow of the crystals hidden deep within the stone. He didn't waste energy on hard rock; he struck only where the 'Value' was highest.

Within two hours, he had unearthed twelve crystals. For any other slave, this was two days of work.

[Warning: Physical exhaustion at 90%.]

[System Suggestion: Trade 'Physical Pain' for 'Temporary Adrenaline'?]

[Cost: 5 Days of Lifespan.]

Zael hesitated. Five days of his life for a temporary boost? It was a steep price. But if he didn't finish this, he would die in 42 days anyway.

he muttered.

A surge of heat rushed through his veins. The fatigue vanished, replaced by an artificial, buzzing energy. His muscles tightened, and his mind cleared. He worked like a man possessed, his movements precise and efficient.

As the sun began to set outside the mines, Zael stood before a pile of twenty soul-crystals. He wasn't just a slave anymore. He was a man with a plan.

`Korg!" Zael called out, his voice echoing through the tunnel.

The guard returned, his face twisted in a scowl. ^You still here, trash? Where are my—^ Korg stopped, his eyes widening as he saw the pile of glowing crystals. "How... how did you get so many?"

`A bit of luck," Zael said, his voice calm. "But I have something else for you, Korg.

Something much more valuable than these rocks.~

Korg stepped closer, his greed overcoming his suspicion. "What are you talking about?"

Zael leaned in, his violet eyes locking onto Korg's. "I know you're tired of being a Low-Bronze guard. I know you want to reach Silver Rank. I have a... technique. A secret way to refine your soul.

`You? A Void-Trash?" Korg laughed, but there was a tremor of hesitation in his voice. He wanted power more than anything.

"Check the crystals, Korg. Have I ever lied about my work?" Zael said, his voice like a snake's hiss. "Touch my hand. I'll show you a glimpse.

Greed was a powerful drug. Korg reached out and grabbed Zael's hand.

[Market Link Established.]

[Target: Korg.]

[Initiating 'Forceful Debt Collection'...]

`Wait... what are you doing?" Korg tried to pull away, but his hand was stuck as if glued. He felt a cold, terrifying void opening up within him, sucking out his very strength.

[Ding! Asset Acquired: 'Basic Whip Mastery'.]

[Asset Acquired: 200 Credits worth of 'Soul Essence'.]

Korg collapsed to his knees, his face turning pale. He felt weak, as if he hadn't slept for a week. He looked at Zael, terror in his eyes.

Zael stood over him, feeling a new strength flowing into his own body. In his mind, the system was chiming with a beautiful, rhythmic sound.

[Quest Complete!]

[Rewards Issued: Lifespan +30 Days. Basic Soul-Refining Technique Unlocked.]

[New Lifespan: 67 Days.]

`I didn't do anything, Korg," Zael said, looking down at the broken guard with cold indifference. "I just made a trade. And in this market... the house always wins.`

Zael turned and walked toward the mine's exit, leaving the guard behind in the dirt. The darkness was still there, but for Zael, the world had never looked brighter.
