Chapter 22 - Chapter 21: The First Gaze Beneath Spring Skies

⋆﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏⋆

The morning sun continued to shine gently over the imperial gardens of the Great Empire of Tianzhou, painting everything beneath it with warmth and golden light.

Soft winds wandered through the flowering trees, carrying scattered cherry blossom petals into the air like drifting pink snow.

The koi pond beside the pavilion reflected the blue skies above, its waters shimmering beneath sunlight as colorful fish lazily swam beneath floating lotus leaves.

The garden looked almost unreal.

Too peaceful.

Too beautiful.

As if hidden beneath its elegance were no schemes, no tears, no hidden cruelty.

Yet Shen Yunxi had already learned something within these palace walls-

Beautiful things were not always kind.

Standing before him, Empress Su Wanyin still wore her graceful smile.

Her hand rested lightly over the small curve of her stomach as sunlight brushed softly against her features.

Then slowly-

She lifted her eyes.

And met Shen Yunxi's gaze.

For a brief moment-

Their eyes locked.

The empress smiled.

Gentle.

Elegant.

Perfect.

"I truly hope," she said softly, "that you will live comfortably here in the imperial palace with us."

Her voice sounded warm.

Kind.

Like gentle spring rain.

Yet-

Shen felt something strange.

Something small.

Something that settled quietly beneath his skin.

Cold.

Not cold in her expression.

Not cold in her smile.

No-

It was beneath it.

Like standing beneath warm sunlight while feeling winter winds touch your back.

The words themselves sounded kind.

But somehow...

They felt distant.

Measured.

As if spoken because they should be spoken.

Not because they were truly felt.

Shen blinked slightly.

For a moment, he could not understand why his chest felt somewhat uneasy.

Beside him, Mei Lian smiled nervously.

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

The empress simply smiled again.

But before anyone could continue-

A loud voice suddenly echoed through the gardens.

"His Majesty the Emperor has arrived!"

Immediately-

Everything changed.

Servants lowered their heads.

The maids straightened.

The concubines inside the pavilion quickly adjusted themselves.

Even the atmosphere itself seemed to shift.

The soft laughter from moments ago vanished completely.

Silence spread.

Then-

Shen slowly turned toward the direction of the voice.

And saw him.

For the first time.

Walking through the stone pathway toward the pavilion was Emperor Xiao Zhenyu.

Several guards and attendants followed behind him at a respectful distance.

He walked calmly.

Steadily.

Without hurry.

Without hesitation.

The emperor wore dark robes embroidered with silver dragons winding elegantly along the sleeves and collar.

Beneath the sunlight, the embroidery reflected faintly like flowing water beneath moonlight.

His long black hair was tied neatly behind him with a jade crown resting above his head.

His features were sharp.

Cold.

Refined.

The kind of face that carried authority naturally without effort.

His eyes-

Dark and unreadable-

Held the heaviness of someone who had seen too much and trusted too little.

Yet beneath that coldness existed something else.

Something quieter.

Loneliness.

A loneliness hidden beneath years of duty and responsibility.

Shen stared quietly.

Because this was the man who ruled Tianzhou.

The emperor who held power over countless lives.

The emperor who unknowingly became part of Shen's fate.

And for some reason-

His chest tightened slightly.

Meanwhile-

As Xiao Zhenyu approached the pavilion, his gaze naturally swept across everyone present.

The concubines.

The servants.

The empress.

Then-

His eyes stopped.

For a moment-

Only a moment-

His gaze lingered upon Shen Yunxi.

He had heard of him.

The mute male concubine.

The son sold into the palace.

The one who had become the center of countless rumors.

But hearing about someone...

And seeing them personally-

Were entirely different things.

The emperor paused almost invisibly.

Shen Yunxi stood beneath drifting cherry blossoms while sunlight filtered gently through the trees above him.

Petals landed softly against his dark hair and pale robes.

His face looked calm.

Quiet.

Beautiful in a way that did not demand attention-

Yet somehow still captured it.

The entire scene felt oddly familiar.

As if Xiao Zhenyu had seen this image before.

Long ago.

Somewhere.

But where?

His brows furrowed slightly.

"Your Majesty."

The soft voice of Empress Su Wanyin pulled him from his thoughts.

Wanyin smiled warmly and bowed gracefully.

Immediately-

The others followed.

Royal Consort Ning Xue, Concubine Zhao Liyue, Concubine Han Yurong, Concubine Fang Xinyi, servants, and maids lowered themselves respectfully.

Shen followed quietly.

"Greetings to Your Majesty."

Zhenyu's gaze finally shifted away from Shen.

"You may rise."

Everyone stood.

Wanyin stepped closer toward him.

"I did not expect to see Your Majesty here."

A faint smile rested upon her lips.

"Were you looking for me?"

Zhenyu glanced at her.

"I finished this morning's matters earlier than expected."

"And General Liang Fengxiao reported the palace security arrangements."

He looked toward the pavilion briefly.

"I heard you were here."

Wanyin smiled brighter.

"So Your Majesty came because of me?"

The emperor looked at her calmly.

"I came to ensure your health remains stable."

Wanyin lowered her gaze shyly.

The concubines nearby exchanged subtle glances.

Even Ning Xue's smile tightened ever so slightly.

"Your Majesty worries too much," Wanyin said softly.

"The physicians already said everything is fine."

Zhenyu looked toward her stomach briefly.

"The child?"

"Healthy."

For the first time-

The emperor's cold expression softened slightly.

"Good."

The atmosphere around them warmed.

But not everyone felt warm.

Shen stood quietly beside Mei.

Watching.

Listening.

Observing.

Mei leaned very slightly toward him.

And whispered-

"...Young Master Shen."

Shen looked at her.

Mei blinked several times.

"Did His Majesty just look at you earlier?"

Shen blinked.

Then slowly looked toward the emperor again.

At that exact moment-

Xiao Zhenyu's eyes unexpectedly met his once more.

Briefly.

Very briefly.

And suddenly-

A strange image flashed inside the emperor's mind.

A willow tree.

Soft crying.

A small figure hiding behind hanging branches.

Tears.

Silver sunlight.

"..."

His brows furrowed almost invisibly.

Strange.

Why?

Why did this person feel familiar?

No-

Impossible.

It had been years.

He pushed the thought away immediately.

Perhaps it was merely coincidence.

Without saying anything else-

The emperor simply gave Shen Yunxi a small nod of acknowledgment.

Nothing more.

No words.

No expression.

Just a nod.

Then he turned away.

"Wanyin."

The empress immediately smiled.

"Yes, Your Majesty?"

"Walk with me."

Happiness flickered across her face instantly.

"Of course."

As they slowly walked away together beneath drifting cherry blossoms, Shen quietly watched their figures disappear into the distance.

Yet for some reason-

He could still feel the emperor's eyes lingering in his mind.

And somewhere within Xiao Zhenyu's thoughts-

The image of a crying child beneath a willow tree refused to disappear.
