Chapter 52 - Chapter 52

Chapter 52

The house didn't sleep.

It watched.

Past midnight, the mansion felt like a map of quiet shadows—security lights cutting across the gardens, long corridors holding echoes that never quite faded.

In her study, Zara stood over the desk, the paused security frame glowing on her screen.

A figure.

A badge.

A mistake.

Behind her, Lucien closed the door softly.

"No more waiting," he said.

Zara didn't turn.

"No," she agreed. "We move now."

She tapped the screen, isolating the badge ID.

Numbers sharpened. Metadata surfaced.

Access logs.

Time stamps.

Cross-references.

"Pull every entry tied to this ID in the last ninety days," she said.

Lucien was already dialing.

"Done."

Within seconds, files began to populate.

Doors opened.

Floors accessed.

Times that didn't align with official schedules.

Zara's eyes narrowed.

"Pattern," she murmured.

Lucien stepped closer.

"You see it."

She nodded once.

"Not random. Repeated entries on restricted floors—always within a twenty-minute window."

A beat.

"Before or after internal briefings."

Lucien's jaw tightened.

"So they're extracting information right after decisions are made."

Zara leaned in slightly, zooming further.

"Or before," she said. "If they're being fed agendas."

Silence.

That narrowed it.

A lot.

Lucien crossed his arms.

"Board-level badge," he said. "That limits the field."

Zara finally turned to face him.

"Not enough."

A pause.

"Access can be shared. Cloned. Borrowed."

Lucien's expression darkened.

"Or stolen."

Zara shook her head.

"No," she said.

A beat.

"This isn't theft."

Her voice dropped.

"It's permission."

That landed harder.

Lucien stared at her.

"You think someone gave access."

Zara held his gaze.

"I think someone made it easy."

Silence stretched.

Then—

her phone lit up again.

Zara glanced down.

Another anonymous message.

No text.

Just a file.

She opened it.

A document appeared.

Internal.

Encrypted.

Lucien leaned in slightly.

"What is it?"

Zara didn't answer immediately.

She scrolled.

Fast.

Focused.

Then—

she stopped.

Lucien saw the shift in her expression.

"What?"

Zara turned the screen toward him.

A meeting record.

Private.

Off-schedule.

Attendees listed.

Lucien read quickly.

Then froze.

"That's…"

Zara nodded slowly.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Three board members," she said. "And one external advisor."

Lucien's eyes narrowed.

"Vivienne."

Zara didn't confirm.

Didn't deny.

Instead, she tapped another section.

Notes.

Fragments.

Partial transcripts.

Lucien read one line out loud.

"'Transition window viable within two cycles if instability continues.'"

Silence.

Heavy.

"They've been planning this," he said.

Zara's grip tightened slightly around the phone.

"Yes."

A beat.

"Long before tonight."

Lucien looked at her.

"And you weren't meant to see this."

Zara's eyes sharpened.

"No," she said.

A pause.

"But they wanted me to feel it."

Lucien frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Zara stepped back slightly, her thoughts aligning faster now.

"The photos. The meeting. The timing," she said. "It's pressure."

A beat.

"They're accelerating the narrative."

Lucien's expression hardened.

"To push you into a mistake."

Zara met his gaze.

"Yes."

Silence.

Then—

her lips curved slightly.

"Which means we're close."

Lucien watched her carefully.

"Close to what?"

Zara's voice dropped.

"To whoever thinks they're untouchable."

A pause.

Lucien exhaled slowly.

"Then we force them out."

Zara shook her head once.

"No."

A beat.

"We invite them out."

Lucien's brows drew together.

"How?"

Zara walked back to the desk, reopening the access logs.

"We give them something they can't ignore," she said.

A pause.

"Something they have to act on."

Lucien leaned slightly forward.

"A bait."

Zara nodded.

"But not obvious."

She tapped the keyboard again.

"I'm going to leak a decision," she said. "A controlled one."

Lucien's eyes narrowed.

"What kind of decision?"

Zara looked at him.

One second.

Two.

Then—

"A restructuring."

Silence.

Lucien straightened.

"That's not small."

Zara's expression didn't change.

"It's not meant to be."

A beat.

"It affects board positions."

Lucien stared at her.

"You're forcing a reaction."

Zara's eyes darkened slightly.

"I'm forcing a move."

Silence settled again.

Lucien studied her.

"And when they take it?"

Zara's lips curved faintly.

"We watch who moves first."

A pause.

"And how."

Lucien exhaled slowly.

"You're narrowing the field."

Zara nodded.

"Until there's only one left."

Another notification flashed on her screen.

Zara opened it instantly.

This time—

a message.

Just words.

"Careful, Zara. You're getting closer than you should."

Silence.

Lucien's expression darkened.

"They know."

Zara read it again.

Then—

her lips curved.

Not soft.

Not amused.

Sharp.

"Good," she said quietly.

A pause.

"Now they'll rush."

Lucien looked at her.

"And rushing means—"

Zara met his gaze.

"Mistakes."

And this time—

she was ready for them.
