Oren Pell had left the line for the result empty.
I could see it from the chair. The examiner had turned the rest of the form toward himself, but the blank lay near enough to the edge that I kept looking at it while he read the papers I had brought.
"You added this yesterday."
He lifted the procedure-scope sheet.
"At the records window," I said.
"I can see where it came from. I'm asking whether you intend to limit the reading to this."
Maren Dey stood at the side table with the attendance register. She had been in the preparation cell last night. Seeing someone who had watched me fail the second attempt made the room feel smaller.
"Yes."
Pell put the addendum beside the original appointment. "A short surface observation may not answer the referral."
"It's the observation I agreed to."
"Those can both be true."
He waited for an answer. I had prepared threats last night and still couldn't begin with one.
