The clerk pushed Lina's copy aside and drew the creditor's statement toward her.
"This is the current demand?"
Ren nodded, then put a finger on the other page before she could place it beneath the blotter.
"That one needs to stay with it."
"I haven't thrown it away."
"No. I know." He moved his finger. "They don't say the same thing."
His morning service had ended at eight. He had come straight to the servant accounts room with the papers flat inside his account book, using a clean laundry ticket to mark the place. The clerk took out the ticket and set it beside him. He put it in his pocket before she could ask whether that belonged to the debt too.
Lina's page gave the principal on her service debt as one hundred and twenty Silver Crowns. The creditor's statement carried the same principal into a demand for one hundred and eighty. Sixty more had appeared beneath a heading for accumulated charges, without the entries that would explain them.
