Chapter 54 - Research into the Thieves

The morning light stabbed through the half-drawn curtains like a dull knife. My leg throbbed in time with my heartbeat, a constant, angry reminder that a bullet had torn through it. I should have been resting. Instead, I was limping across the guest wing of the Reyes Estate like a stubborn old mule, coffee in one hand, laptop in the other.

Edmund had tried to stop me. Twice. The second time I threatened to shoot him with his own gun if he carried me back to bed again. He believed me. Smart man.

Alexandra had left with Adrian an hour ago for the board meeting. She looked like a soldier marching to war, chin high, eyes red-rimmed but determined. Adrian had hovered behind her like a shadow, jaw locked so tight I worried he'd crack a tooth. The tension between them was thick enough to choke on. They were pretending to be a united front for the board, but anyone with eyes could see the cracks.
