Chapter 48 - Echoes from the past

The video connected.

Alexiou's face filled Adrian's screen, and my stomach turned inside out. His eyes caught the light like a snake's, and he was smiling, the same fucking smile that had haunted my nightmares since the warehouse.

"There you are," he said, his Greek accent curling around every word like smoke. "I was starting to think you wouldn't pick up. That would have hurt my feelings, brother."

Adrian's grip on the phone tightened. I could see the veins standing out in his hand. I pressed closer to his shoulder, partly for warmth, partly because I was terrified my legs would give out if I stood alone.

"Say what you came to say," Adrian growled.

"So impatient. You haven't changed." Alexiou leaned back in his chair. Somewhere dark. Somewhere with exposed brick and bad lighting. "I just wanted to see you both. Together. Fighting in hallways. It's beautiful, really. The way you cling to each other even as the ship goes down."
