Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Moment I Noticed

I don't remember the exact day it happened.

It wasn't something big.

No sudden change…

no dramatic moment.

Just something small—

something that stayed with me longer than it should have.

I was at school.

It was an ordinary day.

Nothing special.

Some of my classmates were talking about their homes.

Laughing about little things…

complaining about their parents in a casual way.

It was normal.

The way they spoke—

freely, without thinking too much—

made it sound so simple.

And I listened.

Quietly.

Not because I had nothing to say…

but because I didn't know how to say it.

I tried, for a moment, to imagine myself speaking like them.

Talking about my mother the same way.

But the words didn't come out.

Not because I didn't love her…

but because my story didn't feel like something that could be said lightly.

It wasn't something you explain in a few sentences.

It wasn't something people would immediately understand.

So I stayed quiet.

And that's when I noticed it.

The difference.

Not between me and them…

but between the way we lived.

Their lives felt simple to explain.

Mine felt… layered.

Like there were things behind things.

Feelings behind reactions.

Meanings behind normal moments.

I didn't feel sad about it.

Just aware.

A quiet kind of awareness that stayed in the back of my mind.

Maybe I was different.

Or maybe my life just taught me to see things a little earlier than others.

Either way…

I couldn't unnotice it anymore.
