Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE

🔥 Story Plot Overview

In the ancient continent of Eldrath, magic defines everything—your status, your power, even your worth as a human. From birth, every child undergoes the Awakening Ceremony, where their magical affinity is revealed. Those blessed with powerful elements—fire, lightning, void—rise to nobility. Those with weak or no magic are cast aside… forgotten… or worse.

Kael Varyn was born into one of the most prestigious magic families in the capital city of Arkanis. Expectations were high. His parents were elite mages. His older sister was a prodigy.

But when Kael turned sixteen and stood before the Crystal of Awakening, everything changed.

The crystal… showed nothing.

No element. No aura. No magic.

He was declared a Null—a being completely rejected by magic itself.

Shunned by society, disowned by his family, and branded as a disgrace, Kael is exiled beyond the kingdom walls into the forbidden wastelands known as the Veil of Ash—a place where monsters roam and no magic works.

But what the world doesn't know…

Is that Kael isn't powerless.

He is something far more dangerous.

Something the world has never seen before.

đź“– Chapter One: The Day Magic Abandoned Me

The sky above Arkanis shimmered with golden light, as if the heavens themselves had descended to witness the Awakening Ceremony.

Crowds filled the Grand Plaza, nobles draped in embroidered robes, commoners whispering with eager anticipation. Today was a sacred day—a day when futures were forged and destinies revealed.

At the center of it all stood the Crystal of Awakening, a towering prism pulsing with ancient energy.

And before it…

Stood Kael Varyn.

His hands trembled slightly, though he tried to hide it. The weight of a thousand expectations pressed against his chest.

"Relax," a soft voice whispered beside him.

Kael turned. His older sister, Lyra, smiled confidently. Her silver eyes gleamed with reassurance.

"You're a Varyn," she said. "You'll do just fine."

Of course he would. He had to.

Their family name demanded it.

From the platform above, the High Magister raised his staff, his voice echoing across the plaza.

"Next—Kael Varyn, son of House Varyn. Step forward."

A hush fell over the crowd.

Kael inhaled deeply and stepped toward the crystal.

This is it.

He had trained for years—studying incantations, mastering control, preparing for this moment. Even without fully awakened magic, he had always felt something within him. A quiet presence. Waiting.

All he had to do… was reach for it.

"Place your hand upon the crystal," the Magister instructed.

Kael nodded and extended his hand.

The moment his fingers touched the surface—

The world went silent.

A strange sensation surged through him. Not warmth… not power…

But emptiness.

Cold. Vast. Endless.

His breath caught.

What… is this?

The crystal flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The crowd leaned forward.

"Come on…" someone whispered.

"Fire… lightning… anything…"

But the crystal… dimmed.

Its radiant glow faded… until it became nothing more than dull glass.

Silence.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

The High Magister frowned.

"That… is not possible."

Kael's heart pounded. "Wait… there must be a mistake."

Murmurs spread through the crowd.

"No reaction?"

"Impossible…"

"Is the crystal malfunctioning?"

The Magister raised his staff again, channeling his own magic into the crystal. Light surged through it once more.

"Try again," he commanded.

Kael swallowed and pressed his hand harder against the surface.

Please… just show something.

But again—

Nothing.

No glow.

No energy.

No magic.

The truth settled like a blade through his chest.

"I… I have no magic?"

A gasp rippled through the crowd.

"Impossible!"

"A Varyn without magic?"

"That's a disgrace!"

Kael staggered back, his hand falling from the crystal.

"No… no, that can't be right," he muttered.

His eyes searched desperately for his sister.

Lyra stood frozen, her confident smile gone. In its place… disbelief.

Then something worse.

Disappointment.

"Kael…" she whispered, barely audible.

The High Magister's voice cut through the chaos.

"Kael Varyn… has no magical affinity."

The words echoed like a death sentence.

"You are… a Null."

The crowd erupted.

"A Null?!"

"Disgusting!"

"He's cursed!"

Kael's vision blurred. The world around him twisted, voices blending into a storm of ridicule.

"No…" he whispered.

This wasn't how it was supposed to be.

Not like this.

From the noble stands, his father rose slowly.

Lord Varyn.

A man known for his unyielding pride.

Their eyes met.

For a brief moment… Kael hoped.

Hoped to see understanding.

Support.

Anything.

But his father's gaze was cold.

Empty.

"You are no son of mine," he said.

Those words shattered something deep inside Kael.

Guards stepped forward.

"By order of the High Council, all Nulls are to be exiled beyond the kingdom borders," the Magister declared. "You will leave immediately."

Kael's knees buckled.

"Wait—please! I can learn! I can train! Just give me a chance—"

"Silence!" the Magister thundered.

"You are a danger to the natural order. Magic has rejected you. Therefore… so do we."

The guards seized his arms.

Kael struggled. "No! This isn't fair!"

But no one listened.

Not the nobles.

Not the crowd.

Not even his own family.

As he was dragged away, he caught one last glimpse of Lyra.

She looked away.

That… hurt more than anything else.

Hours later, the gates of Arkanis loomed behind him.

Massive. Unforgiving.

Final.

The guards shoved him forward.

"Beyond this point lies the Veil of Ash," one of them said. "No magic. No protection. No return."

Kael stumbled, barely catching himself.

"Good luck, Null," the guard sneered.

The gates slammed shut behind him with a thunderous boom.

And just like that…

He was alone.

The air beyond the walls felt different.

Heavy. Suffocating.

The sky was gray, choked with ash. The ground cracked and lifeless.

This was a place where magic died.

A place where people like him were sent… to disappear.

Kael clenched his fists.

"So this is it…" he murmured.

Abandoned.

Rejected.

Forgotten.

A bitter laugh escaped his lips.

"All my life… I tried to belong."

He took a step forward into the wasteland.

"But maybe… I was never meant to."

A low growl echoed from the distance.

Kael froze.

From the shadows of twisted rocks, a creature emerged.

Its body was massive, covered in jagged bone-like armor. Its eyes glowed with feral hunger.

A beast.

And without magic… Kael had no way to fight it.

"Great," he muttered. "I don't even get a day to process this?"

The creature lunged.

Kael braced himself—

This is how I die.

But just as the beast's claws were about to strike—

Time… stopped.

Everything froze.

The wind.

The ash.

Even the monster mid-attack.

Kael blinked.

"What…?"

A voice echoed inside his mind.

Calm.

Ancient.

"—Finally… you've awakened."

Kael's heart skipped.

"Who's there?!"

Silence.

Then—

A surge of energy exploded from within him.

Not magic.

Something else.

Something deeper.

Darker.

Stronger.

The frozen world cracked like glass.

The beast… disintegrated into dust.

Kael fell to his knees, gasping.

"What… was that?"

The voice returned.

"You are not a Null, Kael Varyn."

A pause.

"You are something this world has forgotten."

Kael's eyes widened.

"Then what am I?"

The wind howled once more as time resumed.

The voice whispered its final words—

"You are the one… who stands beyond magic."

Kael slowly rose to his feet.

For the first time since the ceremony…

He felt it.

Not emptiness.

But power.

Raw.

Uncontrolled.

Terrifying.

A faint smile formed on his lips.

"They cast me out…" he said quietly.

His eyes hardened with determination.

"Now… I'll show them what they've created."

Far beyond the Veil of Ash, the kingdom of Arkanis remained unaware.

Unaware that the boy they had discarded…

Would one day become their greatest fear.
