Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Ally in Peril

The palace buzzed with quiet tension. Every corridor, every chamber, seemed alive with unseen eyes and whispered plots. Liora moved through it all with careful composure, though her mind was far from at ease.

Selene had shifted her approach again. No longer content with whispers and rumors, she was now attempting direct sabotage—targeting Liora's most trusted allies.

Eveline burst into Liora's chambers, her face pale. "Milady… it's Seraphine. There was an incident in the treasury. Funds meant for palace security were… manipulated. If discovered, Seraphine would be blamed, and her reputation ruined."

Liora's eyes narrowed, her mind racing. "Selene's hand is evident. She seeks to break trust, isolate us, and corner me indirectly. This is bold… but predictable."

Eveline's voice trembled. "But how do we protect her? If this spreads, the court could turn against her—and against you by association."

Liora moved to the palace map, her fingers tracing paths and courtyards. "We act swiftly. Gather evidence, prove intent, and subtly expose Selene's involvement. Timing is everything. If the court sees truth first, Selene's plot collapses."

Seraphine, entering quietly, nodded. "I can retrace the treasury logs and secure testimony from the clerks. They will confirm that the discrepancies were not my doing."

By afternoon, Liora orchestrated a careful counterattack. She arranged for the relevant evidence to "accidentally" surface during a meeting with key nobles. Documents, statements, and facts—all pointing subtly toward Selene's meddling—were presented with an air of innocent transparency.

The nobles murmured, eyebrows raised. Doubt began to creep into their perception of Selene.

That evening, in the gardens, Crown Prince Arion found Liora walking among the fountains. His eyes were sharp, studying her.

"Another trap narrowly avoided," he said quietly. "Few could foresee such covert sabotage and turn it to advantage. You are remarkable."

"I anticipated her move," Liora replied, her voice steady. "She believes she can strike through my allies, but loyalty and careful planning are stronger than her schemes."

Arion's expression softened, tinged with admiration. "You've not only protected them… but strengthened your position in the court. The way you handle this… it is… captivating."

Liora's gaze met his, steady and calm. "Captivation is a luxury I cannot afford. Influence and survival are necessities. Yet… I will allow it as a distraction for tonight."

He smiled faintly, the tension between them electric. "Then I will continue observing, perhaps… assisting where I can."

Back in her chambers, Liora allowed herself a brief moment of reflection. Selene's attacks were escalating, but so was her mastery of palace intrigue. Every move Selene made, Liora turned to advantage, weaving a web of influence, loyalty, and perception that even the Crown Princess could not easily unravel.

The battle for power, trust, and survival was escalating—and Liora Valerien was already several steps ahead.

The next move would decide not only influence, but which faction in the palace would hold the upper hand—and whether Selene would make a misstep that could finally be used against her.
