Chapter 1: The Keeper
Eliza had been living in the lighthouse for nearly three years. She wasn't born in Greyhaven. In fact, no one really knew where she came from. She arrived one stormy evening with a single suitcase and a letter of appointment from the coastal authority, assigning her as the new lighthouse keeper.
The villagers had watched her from a distance at first.
A young woman, quiet, with thoughtful eyes and a strange calmness about her. She rarely came into town except for supplies. When she did, she spoke politely but briefly, never lingering long enough for conversation.
But there was something unusual about her.
She never seemed afraid of the sea.
Even on nights when storms tore through the coast and thunder shook the cliffs, Eliza would climb to the top of the lighthouse and stand by the great lantern, watching the horizon.
