Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Storm and the Hidden Gate

The sky turned a strange dark purple color in the middle of the afternoon and the wind started blowing so hard that the sand was flying everywhere and hitting our faces like small needles. We all knew that a big storm was coming and my brother started shouting for everyone to go inside the tents and hold the ropes tightly because the desert is not kind when it gets angry. I ran toward our small shelter but the wind was pushing me back and I could hardly see anything because of the thick dust that covered the whole camp in a few minutes. Suddenly I heard a loud cracking sound and a large wall near the market area fell down and it opened a hole in the ground that we never saw before. I called Omar and my brother and they ran toward me while covering their eyes from the sand and we all looked down into the dark hole that looked like a staircase going deep under the ruins. We didnt have much time to think because the storm was getting worse so we decided to go down into the dark place and we found ourselves in a large room that was very quiet and cool compared to the wind outside.

It was an old basement or maybe a secret storage room from the days before the war and it was full of metal boxes and old wooden shelves that were still standing after all these years. My brother found an old flashlight that still had some power in it and when he turned it on we saw things that made our hearts jump with joy. There were boxes of dry food and some clean blankets and even a small collection of books that were not destroyed by the fire or the rain. I walked toward the shelves and I touched the books and I felt like I found a gold mine because knowledge is the only thing that can really save us from the darkness. Omar found a large map on the wall that showed the whole city and the secret tunnels that connect the buildings and this was exactly what we needed to build our trade routes and keep the camp safe from any enemies. We sat there on the floor of the secret room while the storm was screaming above us but we felt very safe and warm because we found a treasure that was hidden for a long time.

We spent hours exploring every corner of the basement and we found some old tools and even a small radio that we hope we can fix one day to hear if there are other people out there in the world. This discovery changed everything for us because now we have a place to hide during the storms and we have resources that will help us survive the coming winter. I took out my notebook and I started writing about the storm and the secret gate and how the earth sometimes gives you a gift when you are about to lose hope. My brother and Omar were already planning how to bring the other families down here and how to share the food and the blankets so everyone can be warm. When the wind finally stopped blowing and we climbed back up to the surface the world looked different and the ruins didnt feel so lonely anymore because we knew that there are still secrets waiting to be found under the dust. We felt like the city was starting to trust us and give us its keys so we can open the doors to a new life and a better future for our children.
