The bounty mission had gone unexpectedly well. It was now Hisoka's third day serving as the temporary leader of the Cerulean Gym. As long as he made it through today, his task would be complete.
Over the past two days, most of the challengers Hisoka encountered were rookie trainers who had only just begun their journeys. For the majority, this was their first gym battle, while a small handful possessed a single badge.
One only had to look at the Kanto League's official website to understand why. The site recommended two gyms as the most suitable for a rookie's first challenge: Pewter Gym and Cerulean Gym.
Furthermore, Pewter Gym was ranked higher than Cerulean Gym. People always look for the path of least resistance, and as the Kanto region's acknowledged weakest gym, it was naturally the top choice for rookies eager to show off after leaving home.
However, there were always exceptions. Yesterday afternoon around two o'clock, an elite trainer with six badges arrived. He had participated in the Indigo Plateau Conference the previous year and achieved a respectable Top 16 finish. Since his hometown was Fuchsia City, his challenge order went from the strongest gyms to the weakest.
That match almost resulted in a total wipeout for Hisoka. The opponent was a veteranexperienced and highly skilled. As for Hisoka, in a three-on-three match, Feebas was pure cannon fodder, effectively making it a two-against-three fight.
The opponent specialized in Bug and Poison type Pokémon, and Bug types held a distinct advantage over Psychic types.
If Lulu hadn't used a strengthened version of ConfusionPsybeamto critically injure the opponent's Golbat at the last second, Hisoka might have actually lost. That Golbat had been incredibly agile and knew the Dark type move Crunch. With Kirlia's limited physical defense and stamina, she couldn't have survived a direct hit from that move.
After lunch, Hisoka lay leisurely on a lounge chair by the side of the pool. Lulu sat quietly behind him, her small hands resting on his shoulders. Her eyes were closed as she used her mental energy to stimulate his muscle tissue,
providing a deep massage. This psychic massage helped activate muscle cells; over time, it would make his physical constitution significantly more robust.
Sneasel was currently swimming laps in the wide pool at top speed. Swimming was the perfect exercise for full-body conditioning. The water's resistance helped streamline the body's form. Sneasel needed to raise his physical strength to the next level as soon as possible so he could master that lethal move: Night Slash.
...
The tingling, soothing sensation made Hisoka so comfortable he almost drifted off to sleep. This three-day stint as a Gym Trainer had been quite relaxing. He spent a little time each day beating rookies, and the rest of the time was his to do as he pleased. On top of that, gym leaders received a massive annual budget from the League. It was the kind of life most people could only dream of.
If there was one downside to being a Gym Leader, it was the inability to leave the city for extended periods. After all, one never knew when a trainer might show up for a challenge. If a leader refused challenges for too long and accumulated enough complaints, the League would revoke their official status.
Hisoka wondered if, once he had earned enough money, he should find a nice city and build his own gym. If he made a name for himself and applied for official status, he could become a new official gym after passing the League's evaluation.
On second thought, he decided against it. Hisoka hated trouble above all else. Experiencing this life once was enough. If he had to sit in a gym every single day waiting for trainers to knock on his door, he'd probably end up tearing the place down within a month.
Evening approached. As long as he passed a quarter past seven tonight, Hisoka's mission would be a success. In three days, he had accepted fourteen challenges. His record was fourteen wins and zero losses!
Screech!
The harsh sound of tires skidding against the ground echoed. With a loud thud, the front doors were kicked open. A young boy with spiky auburn hair walked in with an arrogant expression. He wore a blue sweater, jeans, and a Poké Ball pendant around his neck.
"Gary, Gary, he's our man! Gary, Gary, he's the best!"
A group of girls began to scream!
What an exaggerated entrance. Hisoka pushed his sunglasses up and glanced over. Standing behind the spiky-haired boy were five girls dressed in sexy cheerleader outfits.
"Hey, are you the trainer for the Cerulean Gym?" the boy known as Gary Oak asked, crossing his arms with a haughty look.
Gary... the name was very familiar. Hisoka stood up from his lounge chair. As a world-class Pokémon Researcher, Professor Oak was famous online, making it easy to look up his family.
Combining his memories from his past life with current information, Hisoka was one hundred percent certain that this spiky-haired brat was the Professor's grandson.
Hisoka walked up to him and said from his superior height, "The three leaders are out on business. I am the temporary leader of this gym. If you're here for a challenge, I'm more than happy to oblige."
"Hmph!" Gary took a few steps back, clearly uncomfortable with being looked down upon. "It's all the same to me. As long as I beat you, I get the badge, right?"
"Correct," Hisoka nodded slightly.
