Chapter 267 - Chapter 267: The Prisoner Beneath the Mountain

"Mother."

Seraphine's voice was barely a whisper.

Yet the mountain answered.

A deep rumble rolled through the monastery, shaking the stone beneath their feet. Dust drifted from the ceiling. The old paintings on the walls trembled inside their frames.

Then came the voice again.

"Seraphine."

This time, there was no doubt.

It was Elena.

Not the cold voice of the creature beneath Valenne.

Not the strange whisper of the First Heart.

It was the voice Seraphine remembered from childhood.

The voice that had once called her to dinner.

The voice that had taught her how to bandage wounds.

The voice that had told her to be brave.

Her mother.

Seraphine took a step forward.

Ayan caught her wrist.

"Wait."

She turned toward him.

"That's my mother."

"I know."

"I have to go."

"I know."

"Then let me."

Ayan hesitated.

The mountain shook again.

A crack appeared across the floor.

The old monk stepped backward.

"We have to leave."

Ayan looked at him.

"Where is she?"

The monk pointed toward the floor.

"Below."

"How far?"

"Deep."

"How deep?"

The monk looked toward the mountain.

"Deeper than the monastery."

"That's not an answer."

"There are seven levels."

Doctor Rowan frowned.

"Seven?"

The monk nodded.

"The First Heart is beneath the seventh."

"And Elena?"

"The sixth."

Seraphine immediately stepped forward.

"Take me there."

The monk shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because the path has been sealed."

"Then open it."

"I cannot."

Seraphine's expression hardened.

"You've been waiting for me."

"Yes."

"Then you knew I would come."

"Yes."

"Then you must have prepared."

The monk remained silent.

Ayan stepped forward.

"She's right."

The monk looked at him.

"You carry the Key."

Ayan's eyes narrowed.

"Again with that."

"The Key can open the path."

"Then show me where."

The monk hesitated.

Then he pointed toward the center of the chamber.

A circular stone platform stood beneath the floor.

Six symbols surrounded it.

Leaf.

Tear.

Eye.

Hand.

Heart.

Flame.

The same symbols from the Hollow.

Ayan approached.

The Bridge beneath his skin began glowing.

The symbols reacted.

One after another, they lit up.

The monk's eyes widened.

"It recognizes you."

Ayan placed his hand against the center.

The entire monastery shook.

A circle of light formed beneath his feet.

Then the floor opened.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Seraphine looked at him.

"You opened it."

Ayan stared down.

"I didn't."

"Then who did?"

He didn't answer.

Because something had appeared on the first step.

A small silver flower.

A Memory Bloom.

It opened.

A woman's voice whispered from within it.

"Come, Sera."

Seraphine's eyes filled with tears.

"Mother."

She stepped onto the stairs.

Ayan followed immediately.

The others came behind them.

The monk remained at the entrance.

Ayan looked back.

"Aren't you coming?"

The monk shook his head.

"I have waited long enough."

"You're afraid."

The monk smiled.

"Yes."

"Of what?"

"The truth."

Then the staircase swallowed him from sight.

---

The first level was silent.

Stone walls surrounded them.

Ancient symbols covered every surface.

Unlike the tunnels beneath Valenne, these weren't records.

They were warnings.

Maren stopped beside one.

"What does this mean?"

Doctor Rowan examined it.

"I don't know."

Seraphine looked at it.

"I do."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

"It says..."

She touched the symbol.

"...'Do not wake the mother.'"

Ayan looked at her.

"Mother?"

"I think it means the First Heart."

They continued.

The second level contained empty chambers.

The third had broken statues.

The fourth was filled with chains.

Some were enormous.

Others were small enough to fit around a human wrist.

Mira examined one.

"These aren't ordinary chains."

Doctor Rowan nodded.

"They're enchanted."

"To hold what?"

He looked toward the darkness.

"Something very strong."

The fifth level was covered in black roots.

They moved slightly whenever Seraphine passed.

Ayan noticed.

"They react to you."

Seraphine nodded.

"I know."

She touched one.

The root immediately withdrew.

Like a frightened animal.

"Why are they afraid of me?"

Ayan didn't know.

But he had a theory.

Maybe the thing beneath the mountain wasn't calling her because it wanted her.

Maybe it was afraid of her.

---

The sixth level was different.

A large stone door blocked the passage.

At its center was a single symbol.

A lily.

Seraphine approached.

Her hands began trembling.

"Mother is behind this."

Ayan looked at the door.

"Can you open it?"

"I don't know."

She placed her hand against the stone.

Nothing happened.

She tried again.

Still nothing.

Then she whispered,

"Mother."

The door opened.

Slowly.

The chamber beyond was enormous.

At its center stood a single glass prison.

Inside was a woman.

Long white hair.

Pale skin.

A white robe covered in blood.

Her eyes were closed.

Seraphine stopped breathing.

"Mother."

She ran forward.

Ayan followed.

The woman inside the prison opened her eyes.

They were exactly as Seraphine remembered.

Warm.

Tired.

Kind.

"You're late."

Seraphine collapsed against the glass.

"Mother."

Elena smiled.

"You grew."

Seraphine's tears began falling.

"I thought you were dead."

"I was."

"What?"

Elena looked down at her hands.

"My body died seventeen years ago."

"Then how are you here?"

"A piece remained."

"The heart?"

Elena shook her head.

"No."

She touched her chest.

"Me."

Seraphine pressed her hand against the glass.

"Why didn't you come back?"

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

"The seal."

Elena looked toward the floor.

"The First Heart needed something to anchor it."

"So you stayed."

"Yes."

Seraphine cried harder.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you were already carrying too much."

"You could have told me."

"I know."

"You could have let me remember."

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

Elena's expression became painful.

"Because if you remembered everything before the seal was ready..."

She paused.

"...it would have found you."

Ayan stepped forward.

"The creature beneath Valenne."

Elena looked at him.

"No."

Ayan frowned.

"The thing beneath Valenne was only one of its fragments."

"The First Heart is the source."

Elena nodded.

"The creature beneath Valenne was a failed vessel."

"Then what is the First Heart?"

Elena looked toward the ceiling.

"An ancient consciousness."

"How ancient?"

"Older than this mountain."

"Older than the kingdom?"

"Older than human civilization."

Silence.

Maren swallowed.

"Then why was it sleeping?"

Elena's expression became serious.

"Because someone put it to sleep."

"Who?"

Elena looked at Seraphine.

"Me."

Ayan's eyes narrowed.

"You sealed it."

"Yes."

"How?"

"I gave it what it wanted."

"What?"

Elena looked at her daughter.

"Me."

Seraphine shook her head.

"I don't understand."

"The First Heart cannot survive without a consciousness to guide it."

"So I became its anchor."

"You became its prison."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Ayan stared at the glass prison.

"Then why is it waking?"

Elena looked toward Seraphine.

"Because you returned."

Seraphine's expression hardened.

"I didn't do this."

"I know."

"Then why blame me?"

"I'm not."

Elena smiled sadly.

"The heart recognizes you because part of it was transferred into you."

Seraphine touched her chest.

"The black heart."

"Yes."

"But you said it was only a shell."

"It is."

"Then what's inside?"

Elena hesitated.

"A fragment."

"Of the First Heart?"

"No."

Seraphine looked confused.

"Then what?"

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"Of me."

Ayan froze.

"The black heart inside Seraphine is your fragment?"

Elena nodded.

"I transferred part of my consciousness into you before I sealed the First Heart."

Seraphine's face became pale.

"Then..."

She placed a hand against her chest.

"Mother has been with me all this time."

"Yes."

A soft smile appeared on Elena's face.

"I have watched you."

Seraphine began crying again.

"Did you see everything?"

"Not everything."

"Did you see Haven?"

"Yes."

"Did you see Ayan?"

Elena looked toward him.

"I did."

Ayan suddenly felt awkward.

Elena smiled.

"You protected her."

Ayan nodded.

"I tried."

"You succeeded."

Seraphine looked between them.

For a brief moment, the chamber felt peaceful.

Then—

Boom.

The entire sixth level shook.

Elena's expression changed.

"There's no time."

Ayan immediately became alert.

"What happened?"

"The seal is breaking."

"How long?"

Elena looked toward the ceiling.

"Minutes."

Seraphine's face went pale.

"What happens when it breaks?"

Elena answered quietly.

"The First Heart wakes."

"And?"

"It will search for the nearest compatible vessel."

Ayan looked at Seraphine.

Elena nodded.

"You."

Seraphine clenched her fists.

"Then we'll stop it."

Elena smiled.

"You always were stubborn."

Seraphine laughed through her tears.

"You taught me."

"I did."

Ayan stepped forward.

"How do we stop the First Heart?"

Elena looked toward the seventh level.

"There is one way."

"What?"

"The First Heart must be destroyed."

"Can it be destroyed?"

"Yes."

"How?"

Elena's eyes moved toward Ayan.

"With the Key."

The Bridge beneath his skin flared.

Ayan stared at her.

"Me?"

"You are not the Key."

She paused.

"You are the one carrying it."

"What does that mean?"

"The Key is not an object."

Elena looked toward the darkness beneath them.

"It is a path."

Ayan understood.

The Bridge.

His ability to connect things.

To cross boundaries.

To link memories.

To reach places that shouldn't be connected.

The Key wasn't something he carried.

It was what he was.

Elena continued.

"You can reach the First Heart."

"And destroy it?"

"If you are willing to sacrifice the connection."

Ayan frowned.

"What connection?"

Elena looked toward Seraphine.

"The one between you and her."

The chamber became silent.

Ayan looked at Seraphine.

She stared back.

Neither spoke.

Then the seventh level shook.

A crack appeared in the ceiling.

Elena's expression became urgent.

"Go."

Seraphine shook her head.

"I'm not leaving you."

"You have to."

"I just found you."

"And now you must let me go."

"No."

Seraphine grabbed the prison.

"Not again."

Elena smiled.

"You are my daughter."

She placed her hand against the glass.

Seraphine placed hers over it.

"Remember that."

"I will."

"Then go."

The prison began glowing.

Ayan grabbed Seraphine.

She resisted.

"Let me go!"

"Seraphine!"

"I can't leave her!"

Elena smiled.

"Don't be afraid."

The glass shattered.

A wave of silver light exploded through the chamber.

Seraphine screamed.

"Mother!"

The light swallowed Elena.

Then vanished.

The prison was empty.

Only a single silver lily remained on the floor.

Seraphine dropped to her knees.

Ayan knelt beside her.

She picked up the flower.

Her hands trembled.

"She's gone."

Ayan didn't know what to say.

Then a voice echoed from below.

Not Elena.

Something much deeper.

The seventh level had opened.

A gigantic heartbeat shook the mountain.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

The walls began splitting.

Ayan stood.

"Seraphine."

She rose slowly.

Tears still covered her face.

But her eyes were no longer afraid.

She held the silver lily tightly.

"Let's finish what my mother started."

Together, they descended toward the First Heart.

And beneath them...

Something ancient began waking.
