Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: The Thing That Answered

The wind returned slowly.

For the first time since the battle began, the air no longer felt distorted, no longer carried that unnatural pressure pressing against everything around it. The shattered ridge remained scarred beyond recognition, broken stone spread across the battlefield where invisible strikes and collapsing distortions had torn apart the terrain completely.

But despite the destruction—

The silence felt normal again.

Ayan stood unsteadily near the center of the ruined battlefield, his breathing rough, blood drying across his clothes and skin as exhaustion weighed heavily on every part of his body. The fight had pushed him beyond anything he had experienced since arriving in this world.

And yet—

His mind remained awake.

Sharp.

Because of what he had felt at the very end.

That response.

Not physical.

Not visible.

But real.

Something had reacted.

Far away.

Ayan slowly lifted his gaze toward the distant horizon beyond the shattered ridge, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"…You felt it too."

Not a question.

Aelira stood beside him silently for a moment before answering.

"…Yes."

Ayan exhaled slowly.

"…That thing…"

His grip tightened slightly around the sword.

"…It wasn't alone."

Aelira's crimson eyes remained fixed on the distance ahead.

"…No."

The answer came quietly.

But carried weight.

Ayan closed his eyes briefly.

Because now the truth was impossible to ignore.

Everything they had encountered so far—

The nodes.

The evolving creatures.

The false core.

All of it—

Had been connected.

And something beyond them all—

Had noticed him.

"…Great."

Ayan muttered tiredly.

"…So now the real thing knows I exist."

Aelira looked at him for a moment.

"…It knew already."

Ayan's eyes shifted toward her immediately.

"…What?"

Her expression remained calm.

"…You disrupted the process long before today."

Ayan frowned slightly.

"…Then why now?"

A brief silence followed.

Then—

"…Because now you've become a threat."

The words settled heavily.

Not dramatically.

Not emotionally.

Just fact.

Ayan let out a slow breath as he looked down at the broken battlefield around him.

"…A threat."

The idea still felt strange.

Because not long ago he had been struggling against goblins.

Trying to survive.

Trying to understand this world.

And now—

He had destroyed something capable of controlling entire regions of evolving monsters.

"…Things escalated way too fast."

The thought almost made him laugh.

Almost.

But his body hurt too much for that.

Ayan staggered slightly as exhaustion finally caught up to him more fully.

Aelira immediately moved closer, one hand lightly steadying him before he could lose balance completely.

"…You pushed yourself too far."

Her voice softened slightly.

Ayan let out a weak breath.

"…Didn't really have a choice."

Aelira's eyes remained fixed on him for a moment longer than usual.

"…You always say that."

Ayan glanced toward her briefly.

"…Because it's true."

Silence settled between them again, though this time it no longer carried tension from battle.

Only aftermath.

Ayan slowly looked around the destroyed ridge once more.

"…So what now?"

Aelira released him slowly once she confirmed he could stand properly again.

"…Now…"

Her gaze shifted toward the horizon.

"…They will react."

Ayan's expression tightened slightly.

"…The other cores."

Aelira nodded once.

"…And the thing behind them."

Ayan exhaled slowly.

Because honestly—

That was exactly what he expected.

Destroying something connected to a larger system rarely ended quietly.

"…Then we need information."

He said.

"…Real information this time."

Aelira remained silent briefly.

"…You're finally asking the correct question."

Ayan looked at her sharply.

"…Meaning?"

Her gaze returned toward him.

"…The process you've been fighting…"

She paused slightly.

"…is not natural to this world."

Ayan's eyes narrowed immediately.

"…So someone created it."

"…Yes."

The answer came without hesitation.

Ayan's thoughts sharpened instantly.

"…Who?"

But Aelira's silence returned again.

Ayan frowned.

"…Seriously?"

"…You are not ready for that answer yet."

Ayan stared at her for several seconds.

Then let out a tired breath.

"…You really love saying that."

A faint silence followed.

Then surprisingly—

Aelira spoke again.

"…Because every time I stop saying it…"

Her crimson eyes met his directly.

"…You end up nearly dying."

Ayan opened his mouth slightly.

Then stopped.

Because honestly—

She wasn't wrong.

A small bitter smile appeared briefly on his face.

"…Fair point."

The battlefield around them finally began settling completely, the remaining crimson fragments fading slowly into nothing as the last traces of distortion disappeared from the air.

Ayan watched silently for a moment.

Then his eyes narrowed again.

"…Wait."

Aelira looked toward him.

"…What is it?"

Ayan slowly crouched near one of the broken sections of stone.

"…This wasn't here before."

Between the cracks in the shattered ground, faint traces of dark crimson lines remained burned into the stone itself.

Unlike before—

These marks weren't fading.

Ayan touched the edge of one carefully.

Cold.

Unnaturally cold.

"…Residual structure."

Aelira said quietly.

Ayan looked up toward her.

"…Meaning?"

"…The connection was destroyed."

She explained calmly.

"…But traces of the network remain."

Ayan's thoughts moved quickly again.

"…So these marks…"

His eyes sharpened slightly.

"…Could lead us to the real source."

For the first time in a while—

Aelira paused.

Not from hesitation.

But consideration.

"…Possibly."

Ayan stood slowly again despite the protests from his exhausted body.

Because suddenly—

This entire situation had changed.

Before, they had only reacted.

Followed disturbances.

Tracked nodes.

But now—

They had a trail.

A direction.

Ayan looked toward the distant horizon once more.

Somewhere beyond it—

Something had answered him.

Something much larger than the false core.

And now—

He intended to find it.

A faint breeze passed across the destroyed battlefield as the final traces of crimson light disappeared completely.

The ridge had fallen silent.

But Ayan knew better now.

Because this silence—

Wasn't peace.

It was the moment before the next movement.

He tightened his grip on the sword slightly.

His exhaustion remained.

His body still hurt.

But his eyes—

Burned with focus.

"…Then let's see what's really waiting at the end of this."

And far away—

Deep beyond what either of them could currently see—

Something began moving.
