Chapter 172 - Chapter 171

Nekari stepped closer, the heavy clank of the treasure-laden chest momentarily forgotten as curiosity battled greed. The closer she got, the stranger the figures appeared.

Each stood slightly larger than life-size, sculpted from some matte, light-swallowing stone that seemed to drink in the torchlight.

She crept cautiously closer to the nearest figure. Her eyes traced the contours – the rounded cheeks, the plump arms and legs, the pronounced, distended bellies that gave them an almost comical look of childhood rotundity. They looked for all the world like sleeping children, carved from pure white marble.

A simple, rough loincloth covered their groins, adding a touch of innocence. But her gaze snagged on the wings. Sculpted behind their shoulders were delicate-looking wings, not feathered like birds, but leathery like bats', held aloft as if catching the wind. They were surprisingly lifelike despite the strange medium, down to the fine veins visible in the thin, translucent membrane.

"Weird," Nekari muttered, circling one statue warily, her tail twitching. "This just like the trap before? Do I need to… sprout wings and turn into a kid to pass now?"

She scanned the sculpture for hidden switches or pressure points, but found only smooth, cool stone.

Behind her, there was a faint grating sound – scritch-scrape. Nekari's head whipped around, her ears raising instinctively, eyes wide.

Silence.

The chamber remained still, unchanged.

"Am I going crazy?" she hissed, scanning the shadows near the open doors.

The torches flickered innocuously. Dust motes swirled.

But the prickling sensation on the back of her neck wouldn't subside. A primal sense screamed at her: Danger!!! Leave!!!

Nekari took a decisive step back towards the exit, her bulging pack jingling softly.

"Weird place. Too weird," she muttered under her breath. "Definitely not going deeper. Time to rejoin the others."

She had barely turned her back when the grating sounds echoed again, louder this time accompanied by multiple scritches coming from several directions.

Nekari froze mid-stride. Slowly, with agonizing caution, she pivoted back towards the statues. Her breath hitched.

...

They had moved.

Where before the four statues had stood frozen in their recesses, now one was noticeably closer to the chamber's center, its blank eyes fixed on her. The others had shifted too, turning slightly, their leathery wings somewhat raised higher.

Nekari stared, unblinking at the four unsettling statues.

"What are you?" she hissed, her voice tight with tension.

She racked her brain, dredging through her years of adventuring knowledge, but came up empty.

"I've seen slime, monsters, demons… but never… this. What the hell are you?"

The white marble figures remained still as death, their chubby faces expressionless. But Nekari wasn't fooled. She remembered the movement and the sounds.

Experimentally, she squeezed her eyes tightly shut. The grating sound erupted again, a chorus of scritches that echoed unnervingly off the stone walls.

Her eyes snapped open.

They were closer.

Much closer.

All four statues had advanced several meters into the center chamber, forming a loose semi-circle around her, cutting off easy escape routes. Their blank gazes seemed to follow her now, an eerie intelligence behind the cold stone.

"So that's your trick, is it?" Nekari snarled, taking a step backwards, never breaking eye contact. "You only move when I'm not looking?"

She began a careful retreat, shuffling backwards step by step, her eyes glued to the advancing statues. Their movement was silent now that she watched, but the moment she glanced away to gauge her distance to the exit, she heard it again, the telltale scraping of stone on stone. Panic began to claw at the edges of her mind, but she fought it down.

'Almost there,' she thought, visualizing the open doorway just behind her. 'Just keep moving, and keep watching.'

Her shoulders finally bumped against a hard surface.

'There!' Relief flooded her. The open doorframe. Safety.

But just when she glanced back, her blood ran cold. The massive stone doors were sealed.

"Wait! No! It was open!" she gasped, pressing her palms against the cool, immovable stone. "NO!"

She pounded desperately, her fists bruising against the unforgiving barrier.

"Let me out! HELP! ROLFE, HANRY, MIRIEL! ANYONE!" Her shouts echoed uselessly in the enclosed space.

Desperation sparked a frantic thought: the rope!

She still wore the harness beneath her clothes. If she tugged hard enough, her companions waiting above would feel it. They could follow the rope, find the blocked passage, and break through!

With trembling hands, she groped behind her, found the taut length of thick cord attached to her waist, and gave it a violent tug.

Once.

Twice.

She braced her feet against the stone door and pulled with all her might, hauling arm over arm, reeling the rope in towards herself, eyes still on the statues.

Too easy, there was barely any tension, hardly any weight at all.

'Something's wrong,' a chilling whisper echoed in her mind. 'Why is it so light?'

"No," Nekari moaned, hauling faster, harder, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

Hand over hand, meter after meter of the sturdy rope came to her until… It ended abruptly.

A clean end dangled limply in her grasp.

"No… way…" Nekari's voice was barely a whimper while she stared, uncomprehending, at the severed cord.

"No, no, no! This can't be happening! Please!"

Her knees buckled beneath and she slid to the floor, the damaged rope clutched tightly against her chest. Tears welled in her eyes, blurring her vision when the awful, crushing realization dawned.

"I'm trapped… They're not coming… I'm all alone…"

A harsh sob tore from her throat.

"I should never have come down here…"

She whispered the words and wiped the tears from her eyes. The statues stirred again, stone feet scraping across the floor, closing in around.

The chubby cherubs of stone advanced with silent, malevolent purpose.

"Indeed, curiosity kills a cat" a cold voice rang out from nowhere.

Inside the serene embrace of the 4th Floor mansion, Lyssandra reclined in the lush garden. The rocking chair creaked gently beneath her when she leaned back, eyes closed, her expression one of deep contentment. Nestled against her ample breasts, was a young toddler, perhaps five or six years old, her eyes heavy with drowsiness.

Around her, a garden thrived in impossible beauty despite its subterranean setting, sustained by the mansion's very foundations.

It was an explosion of exotic flora:

Vibrant lilies of the valley, delicate white bells nodding on slender green stems, clustered around the base of a stone fountains, their sweet scent perfuming the air.

Pale, ethereal moonflowers unfurled their enormous, fragrant petals beneath carefully positioned grow-lamps, their silvery blooms glowing with an inner luminescence in the soft twilight.

In glass terrariums suspended from ornate iron arbors, ghost orchids floated like spectral apparitions, their translucent white petals and long, root-like tails trailing gracefully, giving the illusion of underwater gardens.

Amidst this botanical wonderland, a dozen figures worked among the flowers, their motions unhurried and precise. These were the maids of the mansion - former village girls rescued by Lyssandra.

They wore uniforms designed to accentuate their natural charms. Their outfits blended the style of traditional maid uniforms with overtly seductive lingerie, tailored to the maker's refined yet decadent tastes.

The base of their uniform was a sleek, ultra-sheer black bodystocking that clung to every curve like a second skin. It stretched from neck to ankle, its transparency revealing teasing glimpses of pale flesh beneath, yet still obscuring just enough to titillate.

Over the bust, opaque heart-shaped panels strategically covered their nipples, drawing the eye inevitably to the swell of their breasts, the rest of their chest and shoulders clearly visible through the sheer fabric.

Cinching their torsos were intricate arrays of black harness straps and shiny metal rings. One set crossed over the chest, framing their assets, another slanted down under their breasts, lifting and accentuating them, a final band wrapped low on hips.

Over the revealing bodystocking, each maid wore a miniature apron. Made from crisp white fabric edged in sharp black trim, it covered only the essentials: the center front of the torso, flaring out slightly to conceal the pubic mound and part of the pelvis. This left the full sides of their hips, thighs, and buttocks exposed through the sheer material of the suit.

Their neckline featured the classic white, lacy ruffled collar softening the hard edge of the harness. It was secured with a small, prim black ribbon bow tied neatly at the throat. Similar delicate ruffles adorned their shoulders, replacing traditional sleeves.

Matching white, ruffled wrist cuffs, also decorated with tiny black bows, fluttered prettily as they worked, pruning luminous ferns with dainty silver shears, or coaxing new blooms from a ghostly orchid.

Around one upper thigh, each maid wore a ruffled garter band, identical to the ones at their wrists, adorned with a slightly larger black bow.

They moved on soft, padded feet, the mesh providing no real barrier to the cool air.

Completing the look was the classic white maid's headdress, crisp and lacy, perched atop their heads at a slightly jaunty angle. A trailing black ribbon provided the perfect counterpoint.

They moved quietly, barely making a sound while tending the garden. The sheer black fabric shimmered faintly in the low light of the grow-lamps, highlighting the contours of their bodies as they bent and straightened.

One maid delicately misted a cluster of fragile moonflowers, the sheer fabric of her apron clinging to the curve of her backside. Another knelt before a bed of lilies, her opaque heart panels straining slightly as she reached forward, the material of her tight outfit parting over her rounded buttocks.
